Greetings to the forum

I am looking for a little help, I am on the market for a new TV for my mother who has dementia and struggles to change channels even with the support of the Flipper remote control. Ideally I'd like a TV that would allow me to control her channels remotely, by remote I mean from my house some 50 miles away, both houses have access to the internet and WIFI. Is there such a product? Apart from the size having to being 42" (+/- 2") all other features are just added bonuses!

With many thanks in advance for any help on this matter

Regards

Gs

Check out Panasonic Smart TV's with the TV anywhere app. A slingbox installed at your mothers may also do what you want.

If such an animal exists it must be exceedingly rare because I've never seen one.

For most people there probably is no need to be able to control the TV channel from 50 miles away. After all why would most people want to change channel on a telly they can't see? So I can't see the manufacturers falling over themselves to offer such a feature really.

Not even sure I've seen any sort of dongle type device that you can plug into a router to fire infra red signals at the telly while receiving commands from a network connection.

You can see the TV output using the Panasonic TV Anywhere app and also using a slingbox..

I had a look at the Panasonic TV Anywhere app. But all the reviews etc I could find about it seemed to suggest it is a way of streaming TV to a remote device and implies that it needs a USB hard drive attached to the TV. So I'm wondering just how suitable that would be for this application?

The usb drive is required to view recordings remotely, afaik not for live TV. I will disconnect my HDD and report if I can change channel with the app.

The wording on all the reviews I've seen does imply that you need the USB drive connected. Possibly for buffering what you are viewing?

Thing is though presumably you can use the app to set something streaming, which I assume would do the channel changing bit the OP requires, but what happens if you then stop streaming?

I suspect the OP might not want to keep streaming what his mother's TV is doing all the time and will close the app as soon as the correct channel has been selected. Would be a bit of a bummer if the TV went into standby or something like that because it thought you no longer wanted to watch anything.

I can positively say you don't need the usb drive (I have disconnected mine, I am watching ITV at the moment on my phone. However selecting to watch ITV while the TV tuner is on BBC 1 HD didn't change the Live TV channel (My TV has twin DVB-T2 tuners), At a guess a TV with only a single tuner would have to. The TV remote control in the same app does however change the channel. I would have to arrange with a neighbour to test I can do it from outside connected to a different router.

Disconnecting from the app doesn't turn off the TV.

What a fantastic response

@grahamlthompson this all sounds very promising, the only thing I'd like to confirm before proceeding down this avenue is, if it would be possible for you to carry out this final test "arrange with a neighbour" just to make sure this does completely offer what I had hoped for!

Thanks so much again to both of you

Outstanding

I will try it out from my Sons next time I go there. In the meantime you could contact Panasonic support to ask. To be sure it really needs someone with a lower spec TV. My TV has four tuners (Two freetime satellite and two Freeview-HD), so electing to watch DVB using a different mux to the one currently being viewed on the TV doesn't change the viewed channel. With a single tuner it would have to.

I think a freeview box plus slingbox would be easiest solution, and will work with any tv with a scart socket.

Another useful thing to do is to power the slingbox using a wifi plug (which you can turn on or off over internet) e.g.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Remote-Contr.../dp/B00N2YE02K

Then if things hang, you can simply power off the slingbox box remotely and backon and it will automatically reset itself.

I've not tried the app away from home but the support page suggest it will do what you are after providing there is a suitable internet connection at both residents.

TV Anywhere....

By entering Panasonic ID (Email Address) and Password you have set on the VIERA TV, you can access the my Home Cloud and use some TV functions (checking EPG, watching the live TV programme / recorded TV programme, setting timer recording, etc.) from Android device.
Once you select your VIERA TV on the Device Selection screen, you can use this function from outside the home network area, such as being away from home.

Set Panasonic ID (Email Address) and Password on the VIERA TV before using this function.
(Network > my Home Cloud Settings)When using this function from outside the home network area, such as being away from home, communication is made via the Internet. Accordingly, both the VIERA TV and Android device needs the Internet connection environment. This function may not be available depending on the broadcaster and network environment.

I'm thinking that keeping it as simple as possible would be the best option. If the Panasonic TV Anywhere app can be made to work then that would be ideal as it does not involve any other boxes that could be disturbed.

In other words the fewer points of failure the better.

Thanks so much again to everyone, you have all been a great help, I have taken grahamlthompson advice on board and contacted Panasonic to just clarify this, even though Deacon1972 has in a way confirmed it.

Thanks

Hi again

Whilst waiting on Panasonic support to get back to me, I decided to have a look around to see what else I could find regarding the TV Anywhere, I found this site:

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/tvs-e...the-ability-to

Which mentions this:
"We've been told that the system only allows for a single remote viewer (locally or over the internet), which is a similar restriction to similar systems, such as Slingbox. However, having this capability built into the TV set is great to see."

Should this be something I should be concerned about? Sorry for the ignorance when it comes to TV's

Thanks

Provided you register your mums TV with your e-mail address and your password and enter these details into the app on your mobile device. It shouldn't be an issue unless you want someone else to have a separate account. Basically one account per TV, you can use multiple devices to access. I can use my Samsung Phone and a Nexus 7 tablet for instance. Of course you can only log one device at any one time into the TV.

OK I have found this one:

http://www.johnlewis.com/panasonic-4...kpid=234328305

I'll obviously double check with John Lewis that it has the TV Anywhere App, but apart from that does this look like a model I should be thinking about?

Any bad things I should be prepared for when buying this particular model?

Thanks again

According to the Panasonic website this one doesn't have remote share.

Hi again

OK, my visit to John Lewis was a waste of time, the guy told me it was his last week and wasn't sure on any new features on TV's!

@grahamlthompson I am planning on going to Currys' tonight as this TV (http://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer...x-40as640.html) seems to be exclusive to them. Just one question though looking at the specs it says it doesn't have TV Anywhere but as you pointed out it has the Remote Sharing, is this a non issue? I'd like to hope that the sales guys in currys' are a little more clued up than JL, but just looking for a little more clarity before I go along!

Again with many thanks

Sales people in Currys having the remotest clue about what they are selling??

Oohh look there are pigs queueing up to take flying lessons!

I wouldn't trust a Currys sales person to tell me the colour of the case on the item sat on the shelf right under his nose much less how it works.

I can only assume remote sharing is TVanywhere. Hard to imagine it means anything else.

eg

http://www.johnlewis.com/panasonic-v...kpid=233182415

This would appear to be the current model list. - look for remote sharing - y

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/search....=utf-8&x=0&y=0

I have to concur with Chrisjr, Currys sales rep are not exactly au-fait with what they sell. Basically any Panny with a series number of AS700 or higher should have TVanywhere (The AS I think stands for Advanced Smart).

Now I am confused

This one says TV Anywhere

http://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer...-42as740b.html

So it looks like you need a AS700 or higher.

I did that but not everyone on the list has the TV Anywhere icon, only the remote sharing one (hence the confusion)
