Your top 5 (or 3) best cover songs ever.

Hopefully this will get us 'Googling' and 'You Tubing' for versions of songs that the majority of the music public won't be aware of. My current favourites;

1. 'Everybody Hurts' by The Corrs (original by REM): Absolutely beautiful vocals by Andrea Corr and a similar performance from the rest of the group.

2. 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash (original by Nine Inch Nails): Proof that music knows no generational boundaries. The haunting video completes the package, check it out on You Tube if you haven't seen it before.

3. 'Let It Be' by Judy Collins (original by The Beatles): This lady has such a pure voice that really improves the song. Admittedly trying to better a male scouse accent might not be that hard lol. However she certainly outperforms many other versions of this song.

4. 'How Soon Is Now' by T.A.T.U. (original by The Smiths): Wow love the nuances in these two girls vocals (ok i may be a sucker for an exotic accent too lol), however an epic production of this song.

5. 'Ever So Lonely' by Monsoon (original by the Beatles): Different strokes for different folks a great 'Sitar take' on the song and lilting female vocals.

Hard to think of everything at once and choose 5 best, so here's my "5 cover versions, not already mentioned, that I like".

1. Pleasant Street - Geneva
2. Solitary Man - Johnny Cash
3. You're A Big Girl Now - Kurt Wagner
4. Hang On To Your Ego - Frank Black
5. 96 Tears - The Stranglers

I'm not technically sure that they were all releases or featured as B sides, they might just be versions played in concerts or radio shows.

Cool links above. I didn't realize one could link to videos on here. So had a quick shufty to see what i could find. I'm not convinced the Judy Collins track is the original one from several decades ago or a more recent version when she (obviously lol) is much older.

There are loads of great covers that never make it to the general listening population.

Here are a couple I prefer to the originals ;

Helter Skelter - Teenage Kicks (Beatles)

Animals -Living Fiction ( Maroon 5 )

Rocket Man - Jason Mraz (Elton John)

Quite.I'd also dispute that the original of Let It Be is sung in a Scouse accent!

I love to hear my most favorite singer James Otto cover the following songs.

"Into The Mystic"
"Ramblin' Man"
"Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit has Done Got Out Of Hand?"
"They Call Me The Breeze"

God bless you and him always!!!

Probably an obvious choice but I have to say Valerie by Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse.

I liked The Zutons original but when Mark Ronson jazzed the song up, it took on a whole new life of its own to the point where the cover version eclipsed the original.

How many cover versions achieve that? The only other song I can think of that achieved this was Torn by Natalie Imbruglia, but the original wasn't well known. I do prefer Natalie's version though anyways.

My third choice would probably be Mad World by Michael Andrews & Gary Jules. Not that I prefer it to Tears For Fears original, I actually like both versions. It's just the Andrews & Jules version, like Valerie, transformed the song into something different but equally quite mesmerising. It sure stands out when you look at the Christmas #1s of the 00s. lol

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine - Rent (orig. Pet Shop Boys)

David Bowie - Wild is the Wind (orig. Johnny Mathis)

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Little Red Rooster (orig. take your pick haha. Howlin' Wolf did it first I think)

Not many, but I do think Marilyn Manson did it with Tainted Love.
Another one I can think of is Respect by Aretha Franklin which was originally sung by Otis Reading

Baby I'm Yours by the Arctic Monkeys (Barbara Lewis song) is one of my favourite covers.

George Ezra version of Macy Grays I Try is pretty decent too.
