Five Star's first top 100 charting single, All Fall Down, recently turned 30 years old. I think it's time to talk Five Star!

Many focus on scandal and a downturn in their fortunes but they managed to chart five out of seven singles from their debut album Luxury Of Life and achieved six top 20 hits from the follow up, Silk & Steel.

A further seven albums followed with a succession of hit singles. Lead singer Denise Pearson also launched a solo album, Imprint, in 2014.

TST is one of their best known hits. RM is a real fan favourite from their 1988 album Rock The World.

I saw Denise Pearson in the Thriller Live musical a few years back and she was quite good.

5 Star were involved in that incident on 'Going Live' in the 80s when, during a live phone-in, a caller asked why they were "so f*cking crap". Also Steadman didn't help their PR by getting charged with a public decency offence connected with cottaging.

I was a member of the fanclub! From what I remember it was free to join, and I got a huge fanpack in the post - a newsletter, badges, stickers and 8" by 10" glossy photos of the band and each member of the band. No wonder they went bust if that was how they handled business

Actually, every so often I check eBay to see if anyone has listed the photos, I'd love to have them again!

Back in the 80s I think fan clubs were fairly generous. The 90s brought in mailing lists that effectively ended fan clubs and what was left I'm sure was finished by the internet and Facebook etc.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the Pearson's mother, Delores, dealt with a lot of the fan club correspondence. Like you, a lot of people have very fond memories of the Five Star fan club.

There's a blast from the past.

It must've been 1986 when they released their album and, iirc, it was the first ever album my older brother bought on CD.

I used to love Can't Wait Another Minute at the time. Bare in mind I was just 5 years old, but that said I still have a soft spot for Rain Or Shine.

The Slightest Touch is a great song, I love the crescendo it reaches, very orgasmic.

I like their first 3 albums.

Went to see them live at wembley on the Ultrabrite tour (sponsored by the toothpaste brand).
Wasnt good at all. loads of empty seats. really dull show. My sister who was a huge fan at the time (she had started her own 5 star club) went right off them.

Yes I wouldn't really want to see them live as their music is too much produced and unless they played a backing track (which would defeat seeing them live) it wouldn't sound the same.

I've got the Silk and Steel album and a few 12" singles of theirs. My favourites are Slightest Touch, Another Weekend and All Fall Down. Great pop songs.

I liked them too. It was a shame they imploded so spectacularly as the period from System Addict to Stay Out Of My Life was pretty much 80s pop heaven, then they just crashed and burned.

I may be wrong but I think they may have started the whole manufactured group with heavily choreographed dance routines thing that was so popular in the '90s. That said I'm not sure if they count as a manufactured group as they were all siblings and wrote their own material.

What's more they had decent records! The Slightest Touch and System Addict are both records that I would actually choose to listen to, and the rest of their output wasn't too bad either. Compare that to the Spice Girls and Take That, not to mention 99% of the boy/girl groups who followed, who all produced utter bilge.

they went bust as they spent a fortune on expensive cars and stuff and then the hits dried up

some of the hits were pretty good but it was all copying the jam and lewis janet jackson style

and that one that messed up his face like MJ, what a freak

Five Star were before my time, but I got into them through an older relative. Apparently they even had their own comic strip in a magazine at their height. Their Greatest Hits is really good, not one duff track. The only problem is it doesn't have the superior single version of The Slightest Touch. I thought Denise was pretty good when she was on the 1st season of The Voice and should have gone further.

It was actually released on May the 5th 1985, so you were a tad early

But a brilliant song either way. I used to love the instrumental tracks they put on the B-Sides of all the releases.

Still love "Rain or Shine".
