My friend's auntie is a well known stage hypnotist who has done student union events for many years so I'm well placed to share my opinion here.”

When you are looking into the dog's eyes, you'll "fall asleep" after x number of seconds. Being hypnotised by the dog wouldn't have happened, but I suppose the dog's eyes could have been a trigger. She's still being misleading and the dog won't be the hypnotist.....obviously.

Not to mention the overlooked fact that to believe in the premise at all you also have to accept that the dog understands what numbers are in the first place.

It's quite bizarre that people are questioning whether the dog can hypnotise people or not, but not questioning how on earth a dog can communicate in human language.

A dog being a hypnotist is one thing, but a dog that can understand the human made constructs of language and numbers should be absolutely jaw-dropping in itself.
To believe that the dog hypnotised them for real you also have to accept that the dog understands what "Don't think of the number 7" means.

Thats a very good point. They must have hypnotised beforehand or told to play along in that bit. Therefore the act is bollocks and the woman is a liar.

Me too! A hypnotist dog is completely out of the question, but spirits possessing a dog and conferring hypnotic powers on it is a possibility

That's exactly what i meant when i said i don't know what to make of it. It's baffling. Of course it looked staged and se-up but my point is i can't believe what possessed Cowell and co to let this act go on stage knowing it wasn't authentic. Or maybe they just wanted to court controversy.

Thanks for the explanation - they were hynotised before they came on stage.

This was the moment the show sunk to a new low, just weeks after trying to convince the audience that a dog could talk.

I didn't get it.

It's obviously faker than a fake thing but if you're going to fake something at least make it entertaining. People 'falling asleep' and then not being able to say the number 7 isn't entertaining in any way.

Dog was adorable though.

It was quite a boring act. Now that it's obvious as to how the trick was done, I'm not sure her act will be that appealing to that many viewers the next time.

Another take on the hypnodog saga http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-ra...t-simon-cowell. Far from being a stupid and pointless segment, it was actually a 'sign of a bold revitalisation' for the show!

I have a bold new idea for BGT. I've copyrighted it so expect handsome revenues if the idea is taken up. How about making it a talent show? I know, I know it's breathtaking, it's revolutionary and you heard it first here....

You've clearly become infected with the dreaded talking/hypnotising dog syndrome.

Sorry, Simon Cowell's already launched a copyright dispute.

Well that was certainly as convincing as the guess what a 'random somebody' is thinking trick.

TBF that's all stage hypnotism is, just people acting. They're possibly a little relaxed and less inhibited, but they're still essentially just acting.

When you see all those people on stage including Ant and Dec all falling into a human mountain because they have been put into a trance, it's absolutely staggering that there are quite a few people who believe that it's because somebody inflicted their mental power over them.

I just don't get how people can be so gullible. It's not the Victorian ages anymore when lots of people believed in all sorts of supernatural nonsense.

If anybody had that kind of power they'd be a real life superhero. Or a supervillain who robs banks, or even attempts to rule the world.
Seriously, if people could learn how to do that to people wouldn't there be lots of news stories about criminals hypnotising people using that power for a life of crime?

I don't think they do, otherwise there probably wouldn't be any stage hypnotists

Yeah, the oddest thing I saw was when BBC's Horizon covered hypnotism. This American psychology professor who didn't believe in hypnotism, hypnotised his students. He said it's suggestion by the 'hypnotist' with voluntary acting from the victims.
