I don't want to create a thread slagging the show off, I'm just really curious as to why this has happened...

The viewing figures for EastEnders started to slip and slide, towards the end of 2011. Then, in 2012 & 2013, they continued to fall further & further, until the BBC took action. Now, figures aren't much better. They can be a bit higher at times, and a lot higher for the big weeks, but they are fairly consistent (Even though the show is very INCONSISTENT).

A lot of people blame the decline in their viewers on social media/catch up/recording, etc... Of course, this is a very good point. However, I think bad storylines played a big part.

Coronation Street was hardly perfect under Collinson, however it kept it's audience and brought in huge figures. Even in 2013, when catch up, etc.. Was out in full force and not much less popular, than it is today, their viewing figures remained solid. Many episodes attracted over 10 million viewers, and catch up, etc... Barely effected it at all. Infact, a lot of 2013 episodes were up YOY, from 2012. The first half of 2014 was also mainly good, in terms of ratings, etc...

However, the second half of 2014, and 2015 have rated awfully for Corrie's standards, even during big storylines, the ratings haven't been fantastic. The show is struggling to get 7 million viewers these days, and there ARE storylines, so it's not like nothing is going on, unlike EastEnders in 2013. I find it very weird, the ratings have dropped rapidly.

What do Corrie fans think? Why has the show become so unpopular, despite having so many characters, that have been there for years? Do you put it down to catch up services, ITV Player, etc... Or, something else?.

The storylines are not interesting. But if they are, they often are anti climatic or go nowhere. There is also an increasing habit of introducing really crap new characters. Or giving established characters bad storylines.

Corrie for me hasn't been good since 2013. It's last great storyline was tHayley's ilness which climaxed early 2014 but despite that, everything else was crap before hand. I noticed a decline starting from the end of storyline involving Karl torching the vic and killing sunita. The storyline started off well but the climax was very poor and rushed. It has never recovered as a whole for me. I still watch it but only out of habit and also of hope for it to return to good quality.

The ratings are still good....6.4,6.7 and so on, this place is TINY slice of soap fans, I think outside of DS it's still popular, it seems to be 'cool' on here to slate it. am loving it at the moment, the only soap I am still watching properly, even Emmerdale is trying my patience at the moment.

It has had it's moments lately. However, 6.4 million isn't great for Corrie's standards. Two years ago, a Gail Platt wedding, along with an interesting storyline, would have easily reached the 8-9 million mark, even in nice weather. Go back a month, to cooler weather, and maybe 10 million. The soaps ratings have dropped rapidly, during the last year.

Like I said, I'm curious as to know why they've dropped, rather than just creating a negative thread. Infact, I'd much rather slate EastEnders, as it was dire for weeks, after the anniversary, and still isn't great, and I care about it a lot more than Corrie.

It's all about storylines, weak character development and very lazy writing to facilitate exits (turning Kylie feral just for maternity leave springs to mind).

I remember being gripped by Tyrone and Kirsty, Carla and Frank Foster and thoroughly entertained by evil Lewis conning Gail.

What have we had recently?

The dreadful Tina and Peter affair leading to her murder, by Rob, a great pairing with Tracy.
Kylie dumping her family and the most pathetic "gang" we've ever seen.
Drippy Michael and Fake Gavin.
The Nazirs and their chickens.

Antony Cotton said his big storyline would be something incredible. Gay couple experiences homophobia in story straight off the news? Er, no.

It's just so boring.

Let's be honest, it had its fair share of crap before Blackburn took over. And let's not forget we also had cringy affairs like Molvin then Karl and Sunita (or "Slutina" as this forum nicely put her).

Personally I hated the Kirsty/Tyrone abuse storyline because as usual they expected as to feel sympathy for the female abuser, which would never of happened if the other way around. Oh diddums, Kirsty had a bad past, so she is equal to Tyrone in his suffering.

INCREDIBLE?.

I absolutely loved:

Kirsty/Tyrone.
Gail/Audrey/Lewis.
Rovers fire/Karl/Stella/Sunita's death.
Carla/Frank.
Becky's exit.

It was gripping TV!.

Collinson's era definitely had it's duds Callum.

Most of 2011 was horrendous! Summer in particular. His whole era rated relatively well though. Viewing figures never really declined under him.

Deadwood characters. Silly sub plots. Stupid cartoon villains like Callum. Terrible actors such as Les Dennis. Stuart Blackburn ruined Corrie.

the rape storyline in late 2011 was probably the only good thing that came out of that year. it's been awful ever since, but i did like the rob confession that was written surprisingly good

The official Barb ratings for week beginning 6 April
Soap Officials w/c 6th April 2015

Coronation Street:

Mon: 8.02m [+1.13m] / 8.1m [+1.12m]
Wed: 7.92m [+1.04m]
Fri: 7.49m [+1.07m] / 6.98m [+940k]

Avg.: 7.7m [+1.06m]

It was the 2nd highest rated programme of the entire week - only BGT rating higher.

Whilst it can be argued that "by Corrie's standards", it's not doing as well as it was - by today's tv rating standards, it's still doing pretty well.

What is perfectly clear though - is it's not playing to a social media crowd.
The social media outcry about CS is far greater than it's actual ratings decrease - especially as it still rates higher than the other (more social media friendly) soaps.

Maybe it could do more to attract the (very vocal) social media audience - but, maybe it doesn't think it needs to

I don't watch it myself - so can only comment from an impartial perspective.

Three very gripping storylines and there was Becky's exit too. Corrie was on fire. I miss those days; when 10m + viewers wouldn't miss an episode.

Entirely agree with your post.
