Hypnotist dog: I think you're all missing the point

Seen lots of comments on here and on Twitter about the hypnotist dog and how the producers were trying to take us for fools, that it was all set up, and so on. I think you've all missed the point. I don't think it was ever intended to be a genuine act.

I really don't think the intention was ever to make viewers genuinely believe the dog could hypnotise anyone. I think it was all meant in a light hearted manner, and was just a daft little twist they decided to put on the proceedings. BGT is set-up/scripted nearly all of the time, and this is just another instance of that.

I personally found it very funny and highly entertaining. OBVIOUSLY it was all a set up, but who cares?! It's a light entertainment show. I want them to make me laugh.

Would you rather have an act like this that provides laughs, or have a constant string of generic singers/street dance groups/etc like we have done in previous series?

Lighten up people. If you don't like it, turn it over. It's not hard.

The show is supposed to entertain us by showing talent though.

It neither amused nor entertained me, on any level, and I am sick to the back teeth of dog acts, both genuine and otherwise.

I'm not sure it was so much the act that was the problem- it was the naff storyline attached to it making it all about Simon Cowell that made it awful. Simon suddenly acting all nice and singing along to acts he wouldn't normally be a fan of was embarrassing to watch in my opinion; I didn't find it entertaining. It was a bit patronising. They should have just shown the dog act and then moved on to another act.

It's a talent show so they should try and fit in as many acts as they can.

If it was meant to be a little joke then why aren't they admitting that it was a joke?

Exactly. Ant and Dec even had an interview about it. They set up an act and tried to pass it off as genuine. The problem was that people at home watching ain't as stupid as they thought we were. Plus, the family are all saying it's real.

They must really be low on talent this year seeing as this took up a chunk of the show.

It was only the same as any stage hypnotism - totally relying on whether the people who come on stage are willing to go along with the play.

Not even gonna lie, I was in hysterics. Could've just been the fact that I was very drunk and watching with very drunk friends before a night out but yes hahaha. I don't even know if I was laughing because it was so bad or whatever.

I get your point but I don't really agree... Usually. I don't know what their idea was but I do think it was just a bit of fun, which Simon was definitely in on. There's no way they can think we're that dumb. I think it's got to the point where they don't care. Which I give them credit for I guess. At least they weren't trying to make it serious or realistic so I've basically given up caring(for this weekend at least)..

I totally agree with you. I usually like Simon and his honesty but I was completely cringing at him pretending to be nice. I know it was supposed to be funny but I didn't find it funny.

Worryingly, on my Facebook this morning there is a discussion about whether it was real. I would change my friends but it's a relative!

It was obviously set up and surreal in a "WTF?" way. The "volunteers", Simon and everyone else were in on it, especially at the end of the sketch with Simon pretending to be nice.

I can but agree with you!

Dog acts in particular must be the lowest level of "entertain" imaginable.

Indeed. By all means slot in the occasional bit of madness but they seem to have got it the other way round.

I found it quite funny - especially the bits with Simon. It's the first time I've watched this year though so I'm not as emotionally invested in the "talent" aspect of the show. The format's worn a bit thin with me, but that segment did make me laugh.

She actually lied because she claimed that she wasn't the hypnotiser. She replied with "no" when Simon said/asked that she wasn't the master hypnotiser.

If magic is talent, then so is this. It's the same principle: we all know magic isn't real but it's the way it's presented that matters, not the fact that there is no magic on show.
