My wife is fed up with her iPhone, Battery life, call clarity, small screen etc etc...

She wants a real basic phone hot spotted/tethered to an iPad.
Not bothered with using any smart features on the phone apart from hotspot wifi/tethering as all Internet browsing, eBay & emails will be entirely carried out on the iPad.
At least a 2 day battery life.
Clear call clarity.
Not too big.

Something like a traditional mobile but the wifi /hotspot ability.

I had a look in some phone shops and tradition style handsets only seem to be 2g so don't do wifi/hotspot tethering.

Are the manufacturers missing a trick here? as for some people battery life and call clarity are still king...

Some low end budget Lumia may do the trick.

I have Lumia 1520, which used to be a flagship phone, so I can't compare it. But it's the same with all smartphones. You use it and battery goes whichever model you have. If you are interested in Lumias, have a look at Lumia 535. Your non Windows Phone alternative would be an Android phone, somebody else may tell you more what's cheap and good there.

Moto E 2015. £100 ish(think you can get £10 off on tesco direct now) and it's 4g. I have one as I smashed the screen on my LG G3 last weekend and have mainly used it for tethering to my tablet.

Great little phone

4G is certainly good to have, you would need to go for Lumia 635 or higher to get it, the price is also around £100.
