Been missing Big Brother since it went to Channel 5? It's coming to Irish TV courtesy of TV3

TV3 has bought the rights to Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother and will start airing the shows later this year.

Big Brother is currently only broadcast on UK channel, Channel 5, which is not licensed to broadcast in Ireland.

It's a key light entertainment acquisition for the Ballymount broadcaster in the wake of losing popular daytime soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street to UTV Ireland.

The show has proven a ratings hit with Channel 5 since it moved from Channel 4 with guests including Katie Hopkins and Katie Price garnering massive audiences with the antics

In January this year the first episode of Celebrity Big Brother, featuring Katie Hopkins and Calum Best, drew a whopping 3.27m viewers. That was up by a million on the previous Big Brother in August 2014.

TV3 will broadcast regular Big Brother followed by two Celebrity Big Brother - one in the autumn and one in January - and will be hoping to bag at least a proportion of that audience.

The show regularly features Irish contestants with both Anna Nolan and Brian Dowling appearing on Big Brother on Channel 4 and Georgia Salpa taking part in 2012 when it was broadcast on Channel 5.

This is a bad time for the Irish to get the show when it's at its worst state ever.

Is this channel owned by the former head of Channel 5?

Jeff Ford?

Looks like he wasn't there for long (thank god) and has gone to destroy Fox

It's weird that we aren't happy with our BB show because BBUK is highly popular in other countries...even more popular than their own BB's.

The reason they're looking for it now is because UTV Ireland launched in Ireland in January and have taken the rights to ITV soaps, and they'll start hoovering up any new ITV rights deals like BGT, TXF, IAC, etc as they come up for renewal. They have the Rugby World Cup for the Summmer, but BB and CBB will fill the schedules in summer, and January.

I really think they should make an Irish version, but I doubt TV3 would have that kind of money.

Irish version with live feed would work better.

Great news!Only sky customers in Ireland have channel 5 so those with UPC or who don't have cable haven't been able to watch it since its move to channel 5! I've been watching it on the filmontv app for years. Gonna be weird watching it on a TV again

Yep I'd say that was a dead cert now.
C5 have nicely opened up a revenue stream for phone votes.
I'd even go as far as to say place a bet on the Irish HM's on Day1 to win.

Ireland should make their own back-to-basics BB! You don't need a ton of money to run a BB, just a house with lots of cameras and a live feed.

Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother will air on Ireland’s TV3 this year, it has been confirmed.

The show hasn’t been available in Ireland since its move to Channel 5 – which only airs in the UK – despite big money offers from Irish broadcasters.

Even earlier this year when the show was airing on MTV’s channels it was even blocked to Irish viewers attempting to watch.

However it seems that finally TV3 has struck a deal and will air this summer’s Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother, according to the Irish independent.

But it remains unclear whether or not voting will work, with Channel 5’s Terms and Conditions currently stating: “Channel 5 reserves the right to disallow votes if it has reasonable grounds to suspect they have been made from outside the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.”

That's good news but why wouldn't they allow Irish phone votes? Isn't that just turning down money?

They will change the T&C's... as you say they will not miss out on revenue .
I wonder if Brian Dowling will be involved (host) ,he joined TV3 May 2014.

Sounds like Channel 5 need to get a live feed sorted before letting them vote.

Finally, I'm surprised its taken TV3 this long to get the rights given C5 is unavailable in Ireland unless manually tuned in here.

I can't see them opening up vote lines; they do with BGT and TXF but these would surely outrate BB.

Anyway, for these the numbers change each week and you have to go online to get the phone numbers, for some reason.

Live feed will always work better for any BB.

The lack of live feed on our show is the only real downside.
