TV3, Big Brother’s new home in the Republic of Ireland, has not yet determined whether its viewers will be able to vote in the show’s weekly evictions, bbspy has learned.
A source at the broadcaster confirmed to us that it is “looking into” setting up a method of voting, but could not provide further details.
This afternoon, TV3 officially announced that it has signed a one-year deal to air Big Brother UK in Eire, covering the new ‘Timebomb’ civilian series and the next two Celebrity editions.
It marks the first time that the show will air in the country since it moved to Channel 5 from its previous network Channel 4 in 2011.
Until 2008, C4 offered Irish Big Brother fans the chance to vote by calling Ireland-specific premium rate phone lines. However, these were permanently axed after technical errors occurred midway through the ninth series.
Currently, TV3 offers similar phone votes for Irish viewers of ITV talent shows The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, which are run independently from ITV.
If these cannot be set up for Big Brother, an alternative option could be to make the show’s official mobile app available in Ireland. Since last year, it has allowed users to purchase eviction votes in bundles of two or ten through the iTunes Store or Google Play.
