I think the Carters are a great family but they are all being dragged down by the Dean rape storyline. It needs to end and Dean needs to be written out. If they wanted him to be long term they shouldn't have made him a rapist.

Dean has got to go and Shirley needs to be faced with the truth and apologise to Linda with all her heart. IMO only then can we see the Carters going back to their best.

I didn't want this rape storyline to happen in the first place, but what's done is done. DTC screwed up Dean forever, having initially improved his character in the first few months of his return. Now there's nothing left to develop.

Completely agree.

Shirley would never do this - her pride and her innate hatred of Linda wouldn't let her even if she knew her precious son for the lying scum he is.

They are not low though. Low was when Emmerdale became the no.2 soap under Lorraine Newman. Now EE is consistently ahead of Emmerdale and there isn't much in it with Coronation Street. Corrie only got a 32% share last night. On Tuesday, EE had 34%.

I actually think Janine (she will be back in a few years) will be the next owner, buying out the Carters.

Mick, Linda, Shirley and Tina will still be around. I think Babe and Dean will be gone by then. Dunno about Lee and Nancy.”

Janine is the only established character I would like to see take over the pub. Failing that it'll be another new family, and they will get just as much screen time as the Carters as those in the Vic always get lots.

DTC has spoken of a new era for Shirley - maybe this will start once she finds out. I think that when Shirley finds out the truth she will apologise to Linda - Shirley is abrasive but she isn't heartless.

I would happily accept Janine in the Vic! I would like Chrissie and Jake back, actually.

Another new family who will go through the same experience as the Carters - they will be built up, raved about, and then once the novelty has worn off - knocked down.

The connection to Shirley adds nothing to the dynamic because they are all good characters in their own right. Indeed, I think Shirley has actually hindered their development, particularly since it was revealed that Mick is her son. And the rape story has finished them, as far as I'm concerned.

I have also had a suspicion that introducing the Carters was just an easy way to get Shirley into the Vic, and thus the heart of the show. Shirley is a DTC creation and we all know how he loves having his favourites front and centre. If they wanted to extend Shirley's family they could have easily introduced Tina (who we already knew about), Aunt Babe, brought back Deano and maybe create another unknown sibling. There was no need to connect an entirely brand new family to Shirley; it always felt very forced to me.”

I've often thought the same thing. Then again, Shirley never enhances anyone or anything.

I've had a gutful of the crappy Carter show. They have totally ruined the show.

Once the Carters are reunited I could see any combination of them continuing to run the Vic.

Mick-Linda-Lee-Shirley- ?Buster (Nancy and Tina moving out to start their own lives)

Linda-Shirley-Nancy-Lee- ?Buster (Mick would have to be killed off if he decides to leave for this to happen)

Linda-Mick-Lee-Nancy ( with Shirley having her own life with Buster)

I think Babe is on borrowed time, Sylvie will be killed off and Dean will leave. Tina's future is with Sonia.

If they all leave then we should either get a refreshed Alfie and Kat who will have the money to buy this time, or a Janine return with a man in tow. Either would be fine by me.
