There have been a lot of threads about repetitive Carter scenes and even threads about the threads about the repetitive scenes and well, you get the picture, but it isn't just the Carters - so can I draw your attention over to Phil and Sharon.

Each week Phil does something that Sharon doesn't approve of, Sharon offers Phil an ultimatum, Phil ignores it - rinse and repeat for the following week.

Is is possible that Sharon and Phil were reunited because of Kathy's return and the possible Gavin/Sharon link?

(I don't say this because of Kathy or Shirley or any other woman Phil has been linked with - I am not comparing Phil's relationships with any other woman, or debating who the 'love of his life' is just discussing Phil and Sharon's current relationship and the repetitiveness of their scenes.)

I don't know why they are constantly making Sharon into a doormat. DTC doesn't get Sharon.

I think they reunited Phil and Sharon because Sharon had no links at the end of 2013. She was living in the B and B and she was disliked a lot. They needed to link Sharon with the Mitchells because she had history with them.

But I'm HOPING it leads to Sharon and Phil to split up. I love Sharon but she deserves so much better than Phil. Just reunite Phil with Shirley because they're both toxic together. I don't even like Phil and Shirley but Shirley "gets" Phil. Sharon will never accept him as she doesn't want to be the "gangster's wife".

Kathy's return is gonna cause so much tension between Sharon and Phil. But what can they do to Sharon if she moves out of the Mitchells? She used to be independent. DTC said Sharon is the new matriarch of the Mifchells. Was that a lie then?

I can't see them splitting up Sharon and Phil, she's not a stand alone character. They could bring in someone new for her, but that is risky. The Mitchells are the only established family that she can possibly fit into.

Yes Kathy will create problems for her, but isn't this in keeping with her 'status' as tragic heroine. We'll probably see her son ruined by Phil, he already looks up to him and dislikes his mother. Did she really think that Phil and his obnoxious son* were going to be a good influence on him.

*I'm still hoping that Kathy can turn her son around...I'd like him to turn his back on Phil (after giving him a good battering).

She did make a point of saying the other night that (in reference to Ben, Jay and Denny) "They're all my boys!"

Phil and Sharon are in a stasis as they have to be together for the fallout of the Kathy Gavin stuff. However the ghost of Dennis looms over them and Sharon can't be seen to condone Phil's villainy as she never did before. Equally, her getting with him so quickly after the Dennis and Albert break in stuff doesn't ring true so the relationship doesn't ring true. Far better that she never knew about the former.

Furthermore she has known the Mitchells for over 20 years so wouldn't waste her breath asking him to change, is overprotective of Denny but is relaxed about him living with a murderer step brother and seems to have forgotten the money, capital and rage she had when she left. So it's all a bowl of bollocks.

Re repetition; it is but much less so than the Carter Collective as Phil didn't return until end of March. I did enjoy that episode with Sharon and Ian as it cleverly hinted how isolated she was in this strange set up and I do wish Sarah Phelps would write more episodes but cest la vie.

Sharon finds out Phil played a part in Dennis's death, paid someone to beat her up and her answer is to marry him, her and Shirley are neck and neck on doormat status when it comes to Philth partners.

At the moment there waiting in the wings for Kathy then it be go, as for repetitive scenes can't think you can even compare to the same scale the odd scene of her moaning to what is going on with the Carters atm, we barely even seen the Mitchells and Phil for that matter so I wouldn't even say it's every week.

Sharon needs embedding in a family it's the only way it will work for her character atm otherwise she be playing Sofa surfing again which I rather not anyone be subjected to that mess again, but storylines for the Mitchells are pretty shite atm, that bs with Max this week was just embarrassing storytelling.

She's been threatening to leave him ever since she found out that Ronnie killed Carl. Then there was the assault- Ben's return - the affair - him buggering off when he came out of prison and again when he went off to get that money off Grant - his interference with her son - his bullying Ben - his threatening Max. They've hardly had a week of happiness since they got together. And now there's Kathy......

That still amounts to a few odds scenes not week in week out episodes.

Consistency and progress as we've seen is not DTC strong point or we wouldn't of had so many repetitive scenes and storylines for most of the main characters.

It was never gonna be a happy marriage from the start, they will likely split but obviously there waiting for Kathy's return and Sharon's daddy being revealed, yes I agree it tiring seeing Sharon threatening to leave then never do but as we've learn Phil is King, everyone has to hail down to him, it's pathetic but that is how they want it to be.

And let's not forget due to the actor taking frequent breaks at important times we've barely had any decent scenes or storylines that make much sense of late.

Edit: I have noticed however that when certain families become tedious it is blamed on the poor writing, wheras others are held personally responsible for being tedious or overexposed. The Carters for instance don't exist as an entity, and I don't imagine for an instant that the actors are demanding to work more hours than anyone else to the point where they are dropping from exhaustion.

I agree. It's getting boring and the viewers are bored of their repetitive scenes.

Phil and Sharon are not happy in their marriage. Well Sharon is definitely not happy but Phil hasn't treated her well.

Shirley was used as a plot device for Phil/Sharon's wedding and Kathy could be a catalyst for their marriage breakdown if they're gonna split up.

I would love to see Sharon, Shirley and Kathy having a showdown with Phil like Chrissie/Sam/Zoe with Den in 2005 . It will never happen

Shirley dumped Phil when she found out about his affair with Glenda. He begged her to stay with him and she eventually agreed, but the fact remains she was more than willing to walk away. She also left him over Heather. What makes her a mug is going back to him but she at least bothered to break off their relationship whenever he did something to abuse it. Sharon's on the spot forgiveness really is a joke.

Sharon staying with him is making her look bad as she's supposed to have a strong moral compass. Shirley you can understand as she is no angel herself. Sometimes she even got involved in his scams, but Kathy and Sharon? No both would run a mile. I hope Kathy doesn't get back with him, it's bad enough they have sacrificed Sharon. Even if Kathy's Gavin isn't squeaky clean himself, if he shows her respect it's more than any woman gets off Phil.

I don't buy that Sharon 'needs' Phil. What, she needs a man who walks all over her? What a ringing endorsement for the character that is! All saying that does is lend credence to the widely-held theory that she is not all that of a character in her own right...

These two also annoy me but on a smaller scale. Phil alone annoys me then him and Sharon but they are repetitive but nowhere near as bad as the adult carters (bar Tina and babe)

But Sharon knew what Phil was like, knew what she was getting into, but then repeatedly complains that he is not a nice person. She knew that she was bringing a thug and two killers into her son's life and turned a blind eye. In contrast no way could the Carters have even dreamt that there would be a rape that would tear their family apart, there were no warning signs that Dean was dangerous when they befriended him.

Two killers? Phil isn't a murderer? Unless you meant he accidentally let a homeless man die?

As for Dennis, he regretted killing Jack Dalton

Their relationship is annoying and it is a waste of Sharon. She was much better as the Mitchell matriarch whilst he was away away. Since his return she's predictably been thrown back into the background role of the nagging wife/doormat. What happened to the Demonic Denny storyline? That was dropped like a stone to make way for more of King Phil's owning antics.

Ah this makes sense - I think Ronnie and Ben aren't murderers. Yes they both killed but it was manslaughter. Carl was about to rape Ronnie and she defended herself. Ben lashed out to Heather in a moment of madness.

Having said this, I don't understand why Sharon is dishing out ultimatums when she has known the Mitchells for over 20 years. It's bad continuity.

The point I was making is that Sharon demanded that Phil throw Ronnie out and went to phone the police when she found out about the killing, but backed down when he said she could kiss goodbye to the Albert if she went ahead. Same with Ben...refused to have him in the house and around her son, until Roxy warned her that if she made Phil chose he would chose his son.

DTC has improved Sharon but her storylines have become very anti-climatic. "I'm sharon watts", the love triangle with shirley and phil and the eventual wedding were all messes and never really went anywhere. But she has become a bit of matriarch and the fact she said that Jay and Ben are "her boys" showed development. Sharon would never of said such a thing 10 years ago. But i say "a bit of a matriarch", she isn't there just yet.
