Ridiculous since no ones in job who could afford that...

I live 2 miles from where Walford is supposed to be and you couldn't get a flat round here for anything less than £1200 a month.

Stacey would be paying about £2500 for that 3 bed place she lives in so god knows how she's paying for it!

Me and my friend rent out my Dad's flat for £700 a month, and we're both on little wages. It's not that bad.

Yes, i was going to say that 800 sounded low for that area of London. Even one bedroomed or studios are priced assuming at least 2 adults will be living there and sharing the bills.

Is your Dad giving you a subsidized rent at all?

Ridiculously underpriced but with a soap you have to stretch your imagination and blur reality somewhat.

Most renters in London claim housing benefit, and that includes those who work but dont earn a lot.

I don't think Dundee is the most exciting place in the world but it's 350-400 here

Pretty sure what I am paying now I paid per month in Finchley in the mid 90s

She wasn't? Didn't we see a rent arrears letter before she left last week? She also might have been getting some sort of housing allowance from the Council.

The fact is though, that none of them except Phil, Ian, Dot, Mick and maybe Max could afford the rent/mortgages for that area of London. Phil, ian and Max all make reasonable money plus of course I think ian's house was paid in full by Arthur and Pauline's deaths plus they bought it off the Council at a reduced rate. Dot lives in a Council property. The vic and flat are all one property of course, business covers the mortgage for living area.

I've worked in London for over 20 years so most of my friends live in London (or Essex, Kent, Surrey) including a couple of very good friends in Walthamstow, stratford and Canning Town (EE area) and none of them claim housing support. But then they are on quite good wages due to the jobs we do.

Perhaps you mean people that don't go through official books so DWP can't check on salaries all lie about their income (or don't need to because they are on minimum wage) mostly get housing benefit? I know there is no way i would be eligible due to being above the threshold.

I find it hard to believe anywhere (even somewhere like Dundee) is as little as 250 pcm in this day and age.

ETA - unless it was a flat share where you literally just get a bedroom.

Is that Weston Super Mare?
I have family in Burnham on Sea and although it is a beautiful area, property prices do seem quite reasonable (dare i say it even cheap) compared to most other areas in the South, especially London.

I'm not surprised. It is a capital city, vibrant and a lot of people want to live there.

No, he offered but I refused because it would mean he'd be getting less money than if someone else was living there.

That was very decent of you. I am surprised that anywhere very close into London would be that cheap though if that is the going rate, ie he couldn't get more if he rented privately rather than to family.

You'd be looking at that for even the most basic of places 35 miles out where I am in Essex. Indeed property prices in London are the reason I (and my parents before me) are in the commuter belt of Essex rather than London 'proper'.
