Maybe people are put off because it's neither one thing nor t'other - the occasional laugh out loud moment, and then very dark. But it's carrying me with it - when the next girl went missing tonight, I actually gasped. . |

I do like this show but I don't LOVE it, which is a bit disappointing for me. I wanted to love it - on paper, it's exactly the kind of thing I would normally go for, but somehow it hasn't come off quite right. I think there's a problem in how they've mixed up the tone. IMO the comedy elements would work better if they were darker and more subtle/understated, but instead they're a bit slapstick/farcical and come across as overplayed and as a consequence out of place and not funny. I'll keep watching though, but it's not as good as it could have been.

The jokes are a bit too obvious & cliché and often badly telegraphed. The pseudo neo-nazi getting a drunken hand job from a black transvestite for instance. I can see the joke, I get the joke but I don't laugh. The lines are so badly delivered that I have to have the sub-titles on which kills any 'clever' banter. The plots are a bit obvious - from the start it had to be the husband. It lacks the warmth & charm of (early) Shameless - though that may improve with more inclusion of the families of the officers. If they flesh out the characters they may seem less one dimensional caricatures. I know I said I'd give it one more chance last week, but there is something about it that I do like. Probably it's potential. I really hope that they get a second season and are able to fix everything that's wrong with it. It could be a great show. So.....one last chance next week

I am getting into it and would probably benefit from going back to the start.

I don't know if I said this before but I love it. I love the quirkiness and the humour and the darkness. To my mind they have just the right mix and this was yet another brilliant episode - not quite so manic with the police officers this time - but still extremely good. Consistently good writing and great acting. It is turning out to be a gem.

I agree with the poster a few posts back that the comedy could/should be a bit darker to fit with the rest of the show.
Still enjoying it though. This may sound a bit harsh but I didn't catch one word of what the downs lad said. I know it's good to get disabled actors work but surely you need to be able to understand them - saying that, the rest of the cast aren't much better in some scenes. |

Anyway, does it matter what you think it is supposed to be? It is what it is. Don't worry about labels. |

I think that hits the nail on the head. What was that programme with the dysfunctional firearms unit that was on recently? The James Nesbitt one? That got it right.
Edit: I am thinking of Babylon. I think it lacks a certain narrative drive regarding the primary story and that's not helping. |

Anyone else still in? I think it's really good. They do talk a bit fast but I didn't find it a problem tonight.

I'm enjoying it but I think the criticisms are fair. Some of the acting is a bit below par and the dialogue is inaudible in places, but I think the characters are great and the storyline is an interesting one. I like having the story arc mixed with a crime of the week.

I'm still in it, need to watch without browsing and faffing about it's better that way.
I hoped we'd get some mileage out of Cathy and Dinah's family, but that's been binned off now. They still talk a little too fast. |

Better episode this week I thought. While the story of the week plot wasn't particularly good it played out well in regards showing aspects of the characters. Getting to know them more injects a bit of interest. And the main story is moving on.
Still not as good as it could be - the humour still isn't delivering well. I got away without sub titles this week but only just. And the script could be tighter. So, yep. Gets another chance

Its got flaws, but its more than watchable for me and its getting into its stride a bit more now - you need to give a new drama a few episodes.
Anyone else suggested the serial killer could be Jo Scanlan's husband / partner? There was a funny look between him and Patrick on the stairs and does seem a bit of an oddball. Lost track of time scale but night in a police cell a botched attempt at an alibi? |

I'm enjoying it all, even though I often feel like I've missed something because I'm not clever enough to keep up. It's bloody fast!

Lost track of time scale but night in a police cell a botched attempt at an alibi? What about the one that seems to be sleeping at the station? Or the other one's father? I guess that's another flaw - I haven't a clue what any of them are called except Dinah!! |

That'd be a bit Broadchurch. Can't see Abbot wanting the derision that would engender.
yeah! Its not as 'serious' as Broadchurch though, an absurd reveal at the end would almost be in keeping in some ways.

I thin this is a great programme and am really enjoying it. The mixture of drama, comedy and cringeworthy Manc accents is very well done. I can't believe that there aren't more people watching. I think perhaps that they could usefully do as I do and switch the subtitles on; it is s much easier.

As my recording off Channel 4 HD failed last night (an ongoing problem for Channel 4 HD at the moment) I watched it on catch up today and thought the audio was a lot clearer than has been the case on the previous episodes I had watched the broadcast version of.

Definitely better on catch-up. Did anyone else wonder if that chap was suddenly going to pick out Viv's husband on the stairs?

I watched with subtitles this week and it was a lot clearer. I am loving this, I think it´s a really compelling, watchable and addictive little series.
I agree the killer will be someone we know and the husband is an interesting idea! I was suspecting one of the officers but do quite like the idea of it being the husband. When Cathy was doing her hypnotism thing the profile of the killer in the van did actually look a bit like the husband too! Intriguing!! |
