Am I missing something? (really enjoying the series by the way) - when the two PCs found the man beaten up I thought one of them looked up to see a silver car driving past at the end of the street, and they'd been told by one of the lads enjoying themselves in the bushes () that the suspect had driven off in a silver car - then it's on the tv that they man that was run over had committed all the murders - I was on my laptop at the time, so perhaps I should just have given full attention to the TV? ....
I was thinking he was the guy who murdered the girls till I read your comment and the policeman whoever he is raped Kathy. I don't know why it didn't occur to me at the time that the policeman may have murdered them or they may have done it together. But he didn't actually confess in the car I didn't quite catch what he said something like you mean the girls then I think he said he was sorry. The police thought it was him as; he told Viv he called himself The Handyman online; the laptop they found at his flat was the one used to register(I think or at least was used by him) the account for The Handyman; they also found the notebook with dates and times he was watching Kathy at Dinah's house. But now they know someone else raped Kathy obviously there were 2 of them working together but just who committed the murders we don't know.

Twists and turns, yes I agree! I'm even wondering if 'handyman' (or was it candyman?) is the top cop guy (Viv's boss)!!
Handyman, I think.

In general, I've now watched all eps back to back, tonight, and I think I love this, which I didn't expect. I like my crime drama played straight serious and dark in mood, and I was worried (before seeing it) that mixing these too elements might be cringe viewing, but it works. This sort of reminds me of that Babylon thing by Danny Boyle (in which they mix the serious matter with humour elements together well) but I prob even pref this. Looking forward to watching the remaining weeks in normal time, and just hope it's not Will Mellor, lol.

No one got run over.

The guy by the side of the road (can't remember his name) had been badly beaten by Mercy (the scrapyard man) and his 'slave' Ajamu.

The man driving the silver car was Patrick Llewellyn who later died after a lorry crashed into his car when he was reversing away from the cop car. He was involved with the rapes and killings of the Downs girls but was not acting alone (as we found out towards the end of the episode).
I didn't say he got run over I said he got killed by a bus. I thought it was a bus. In the first episode a guy was running from the police (Dinah was chasing him) and he got run over by a bus. Tonight the guy in the silver car was reversing from Neet and the lorry crashed into him. So still much the same thing.

This week's episode so far (3/4) is so bad compared to last week. It's so hot and miss. The Manc psychologist is the worst character but Will Mellor and her with the fringe aren't much more us.

Just finished. The ending was OK. Still a bad episode. Some of the direction and the writing was appalling. The incidental music actually takes away from the seriousness of some of the plots.

hot and miss
Is this a new version of "hit and miss"? I thought it was good and kept my attention which is more than I can say for some programmes lately!

I know you didn't - but I thought Hackney1 was under the impression that the victim of the beating was actually a hit and run victim. Maybe I misread what Hackney1 posted

Strange, I thought it was a better episode. Finding it's 'identity', dropping the humour & concentrating on the plots with a bit of characterisation thrown in.

I do think it could be a lot better still. The characters are still pretty one dimensional, apart from Viv & Dinah who are maybe 2 dimensional Some of the acting is admittedly woeful.

But all in all, it's improving IMO.

I thought your comment was in response to mine. As for the 'bus' I've got a short term memory problem I think Hackney1 was just confused as it seemed intially that the guy killed in the car was the murderer but by the end of the episode they were still looking for someone else.

yes, it was my confusion! I totally forgot about Patrick being killed by the lorry whilst in his car so when they said someone had been in car accident I was confused as knew the other man had been beaten up. - I really should put my laptop down when watching these programmes. all makes sense now. haven't got a clue who the Handyman is though ...

An enjoyable episode last night, one or two niggles with some of the acting, i.e. the arrest of the scrap dealer where one or two of the police seemingly just stopped what they ere doing for the action of their next scene, but at least the character Joy and Spike got more than/equal exposure as Vivian and Dinah to the point that I know their names this week!!

I wasn't 100% clear of the conclusion of the crime of the episode involving the guy found beaten up. Was it that Ajamu had purposely 'thrown' the homeless guy over the wall in order to get him away from the scrap dealer?? Why was Ajamu so loyal to the scrap dealer - if he had gone through so much trouble to get the homeless guy away from him??

I thought it was a great episode.

Is it my imagination or has Kathy repeatedly mentioned being able to smell her attacker? She said it in this episode and I am sure she has mentioned it before. I wonder if this is significant? It could mean nothing but it could be a clue. In a previous episode one of the women either Dinah or Tegan came across a constable having a wash in the gents and he blurted out something about sleeping in his car. I wonder if he is the killer and he has some kind of personal hygiene issue so Kathy said she noticed his smell. Just a thought but there was something like that years ago in a Patricia Cornwell book.

Although Ajamu wasn't well treated he can't cope with the real world so preferred to stay were he was however he knew the other guy didn't want to stay. Ajamu pushed him over to help him get away.

The only problem I have with it being him is they were looking at the cctv? footage the guy from those flats gave them. They saw who'd been in the 'handyman's' flat but as he was in a white (csi?) suit and had a mask on they could't tell who it was. The guy who'd been sleeping in his car is definitely chubby so they'd at least be able to see as much on the video.
As for the smell perhaps it's someone with diabetes as their breath smells fruity and this has been used a number of times in plot lines so perhaps that's how it was used in a PC book.

Ahhhhh thank you for that. I didn't hear or figured out why he wanted to stay with the guy.

Yes I know who you mean PC Jonah because Joy asked him if he was OK and if needed to talk she was there. Did Cathy say he smelt of something or he was smelly? Also in the video of the guy in a forensic suit appeared to be quite tall slim build. This would fit the tall blond PC Steve and the forensic guy.

I noticed the comments about smelling the rapist as well and I reckon it will prove to be significant. However I think the copper sleeping in his car is a red herring, maybe even a deliberate false trail by the writer. My money is still on someone connected with Bo Peep (hence plenty of inside info). No idea who though !

Patrick Llewellyn had the tattoo, not the unknown 2nd person.

What is it he does for a living ? I've forgotten. Is it something where he might get smelly, like an artist using turps a lot or something like that ?

EDIT: I think he is a musician from what I remember. Also, wasn't he in the cells at one point when one of the murders was happening ?
