Lucy Hawking responds to Katie Hopkins - not respectfully, but politely

Lucy Hawking, daughter of Stephen and mother of an autistic son has penned a response to Hopkin's recent 'jokes' about Milliband being on the spectrum.

I suppose it shouldn't surprise that Stephen's daughter is brilliant, eloquent, insightful and on a stratospherically higher intellectual level than Hopkins.

It cuts to the bone - particularly in relation to Hopkin's future 'career'.

I've just added Lucy to my dream dinner party list.

Here's a taster:

I don’t know what you are paid to express such unreserved and trenchant views, but it surely cannot be enough. Soon, the media spotlight will move on and your planned obsolescence (planned by media companies, not by you) will kick in. At which point, you will be left with no viable career and a backwash of hatred of a staggering acidity and volume.

To be honest, I don’t really care what happens to you. But I do care what happens to people with disabilities and their families, and I care that you are making difficult lives even more challenging. Please stop.

Brilliant article.

I try to ignore what Hopkins has to say as I don't like to give her the oxygen of publicity (she barely deserves the oxygen of oxygen, let alone the oxygen of publicity) but she really does go too far sometimes and deserved berating for that.

What is quite glaring from that retort though, is how she can't seem to consider that Katie Hopkins may well act as she does because of some sort of personality disability...

I know that in no way lessens the hurt that Katie Hopkins may cause, but I have always felt that Katie has been outspoken and emotionally detached from those around her for her entire life... and I wonder how much of that is under her control.

I found it very telling in the CBB house when she was talking about her epilepsy and she spoke about how the neurologist had shown her scans that detailed the missing part of her brain. It clearly hasn't affected her "book smart" intelligence, but, perhaps it has had an impact upon her emotional intelligence.

Obviously not a disability for which Ms Hawkings has much sympathy

I think she'd probably have every sympathy with Katie if that was the case. But surely if Katie has a neurological condition that affects her emotional intelligence, it is even more important to ask her to stop what she's doing? Most people wouldn't even need to be told, they just wouldn't say those things. I am hoping that at some point, someone will get through to Katie and make her realise something.

Sympathy for Katie Hawkins? (and I watched her in the CBB house too) I have none. She's a hideous creature and the sooner the spotlight is off her the better.

I'd say - if she was telling the truth in the house - that it did indeed affect her 'book smart' intelligence. Anyone with her far right views - calling dying foreigners 'cockroaches' her incessant hateful bile about Miliband, and her views that all people on benefits should get absolutely nothing except abuse of course aren't the views of a woman with booksmarts.

I don't think it's glaring at all. Epilepsy is quite a common medical condition; I never recall hearing about racism, snobbery, ignorance and uncontrollable vitriol as common side-effects.

I've also never heard of a 'personality disability'. Personality disorders, yes - most violent criminals have at least one. Doesn't mean I'm sympathetic towards them. On the contrary.

A narcissistic or psychopathic personality disorder might explain her ridiculous behaviour. Or maybe she's just a rotten individual. Either way, she is utterly incomparable with either Lucy's father or son.

Whoa there a moment... I NEVER linked her epilepsy with her outspokenness and seeming lack of empathy. Please don't put words in my mouth.

When you say "she is utterly incomparable with either Lucy's father or son" - how can you be so sure? Who are you to decide to play Top Trumps with people's disabilities. People with (for example) Aspergers may not suffer physical pain, but they may well suffer from great distress at being unable to decipher society's rules which can leave them isolated and a near constant state of distress at trying to build relationships and to feel accepted.

Seems like Katie Hopkins isn't the only one who can be a tad judgemental.

Katie Hopkins will never stop being nasty while there's people like you making excuses for her.

Or maybe Katie Hopkins is just a horrid individual? I know not everything in life is black or white but sometimes just sometimes it is.

I find it hard to believe her views are part of a disability, if they were then surely her family would be trying to stop her. I have known many people with autism and Aspergers and some people with epilepsy too none of them display ultra right wing tendencies and would dream of calling people drowning off the coast as cockroaches etc . Her behaviour in BB seemed to me well thought out and very much not off the cuff and instant in fact she seemed unable to do anything off the cuff it was all pretty well planned before she spoke.

Bit in bold 1 and 2 - em, yes, you did. I suggest you read back your first post again.

Top trumps with people's disabilities? Where did I do that. I'm saying that her epilepsy is nothing to do with her behaviour. You clearly think it does, My issue is with her behaviour which is unrelated to her disability. You seem to be trying to muddy the waters between her epilepsy - disability - with her personality. You then contend that it's a 'personality disbility' - a new concept to me.

When has Katie Hopkins ever, EVER, expressed great distress at her inability to decipher society's rules? Do you really think the logical response to 'distress' would be to wind people up on twitter?

And I'm more than a 'tad' judgemental. It would be a very, very strange world if we didn't make judgements on the behaviours of other people - not to mention violent.

The difference is how and why I judge people.

But many people seem to think Katie does have a neurological condition that affects her emotional intelligence -- and say she's a sociopath, or has narcissistic personality disorder, or whatever. There's no sign of such beliefs about Katie resulting in sympathy.

Even if she did have such conditions, it would not justify her ignorance and offensive manner.

She would only get my sympathy if she was struggling to manage such a condition.

I know I'm giving her attention, but I'd be very surprised if Hopkins changes her ways. Even if she is just a professional troll, she's still a real nasty piece of work. I think Lucy's comments will just fall on deaf ears.

Even if she has any of these conditions none of these excuse her obnoxiousness. And don't forget those who promote her and give her a voice in the media. As far as I'm concerned they're as much responsible as KH is for the trash that comes out her mouth.

Even if Hopkins is very controversial because of her epilepsy, she's been told that what she's saying isn't right in the moral sense. Unless you're saying that Hopkins' epilepsy causes her to be like this every so often. I personally think she likes the negative attention.

I've said that, as have many others and I've also expressed sympathy as she's obviously damaged and emotionally dysfunctional. . I have no sympathy for anyone who refuses to address their own issues and deliberately damages others instead of facing and dealing with their own, often painful, reality.
Her dysfunction is simply being exploited by the media until she wears thin or probably self destructs. It's already begun and it's classic behaviour.

Katie Hopkins seems to think she knows quite a bit about the spectrum, a lot of people who think that fail to identify themselves in my experience. Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a recognised condition although it is said to disappear in teenage years.....however I still have it in abundance and my guess is she does too

As a person on the autism spectrum myself, we must remember there is a whole heap of difference between IQ and Emotional Intelligence (EQ). There are many people with extremely high IQ's but whose EQ is no bigger than their shoe size.

Sympathy and empathy although similar sounding are totally different and in my opinion Katie Hopkins and the word empathy don't go together. Like I say, just my opinion but perhaps she should do the AQ test?

Even if Katie was a sociopath it shouldn't result in sympathy. I'll explain why...

It's been proven that people with personality disorders such as Psychopaths/Sociopaths do know right from wrong, they just don't care.

So you see Katie does know right from wrong she just chooses to ignore societies niceties to get ahead in life. She knows saying controversial things will get her attention and to her that out weighs everything.
