We all know Phil has more money than anyone else in the Square (can afford a good car, can afford a solicitor, can afford a washing machine etc), and he uses this as a power to influence and intimidate others - even his own family.

But WHY does Phil have so much money, seeing as he comes from a working class family and doesn't have many successes in life? Looking back, Grant wasn't rich, and tbh neither was Peggy particularly. So why Phil?

The house was paid for from Roxy's money that he stole.

Also Phil can just walk into a bank and the bank manager would be so intimidated he would hand over cash to him there and then. If not Phil would sort them out.

Phil and Grant bought the Arches when they first arrived in the show in 1990. He must have been pretty successful because he gradually expanded his business and property empire over several years. At some point he has owned each of the following: the Arches, the cafe, 5 Albert Square, 31 Albert Square, 55 Victoria Road, half of the Vic, and a majority share of R&R.

When Phil and Grant first arrived in the square they were just a couple of grease monkeys but they'd do jobs on the side with their criminal connections.

Their dad was an East End boxer and mixed with criminal types so they were brought up in the know and were connected if anyone wanted a bit of hired muscle, a bit of dodgy dealing, getaway driver anything like that and doing jobs like this gave them their cash to buy up their empire.

Considering they couldn't pay Richie recently (and Phil had to 'blackmail' her to settle the account this week) it all seems ridiculous that he has as much as he does right now.

Phil's wealth built up gradually throughout the 90s and early 2000s similar to how Ian very gradually bought more and more properties and businesses. It was realistic. Then realism went completely out the window in late 2010 when Phil, then a homeless crack addict, stole £15K from Roxy and was somehow able to buy a house and just a couple of months later the R&R. Since then he's mysteriously had an unlimited amount of funds.

Phil is a farce of a character and has been for last few years. There's no credibility in storylines. Keeping Phil 'going' damages those around him. Whether it be love struck Shirley - as if! Doormat Sharon. Lackies Ben and particularly Jay. The way Ronnie defers to Phil. Mind you I dislike murderer Ronnie as a character. Her return has been poor but hardly surprising as she is forever doing something else.

We're meant to believe he's some sort of gangster that's off robbing banks with his gang of thugs in between 'owning' half of Albert Square. The other week he was broke but managed to lay his hands on a holdall full of cash a couple of weeks later...so much money he was throwing it around like confetti. Then there were all those cars that he provided for Karin to scam Max.

He stole some money off Roxy. He got almost half a mill of Mick for the pub. An amount of money which I'm still struggling to understand how Mick came about.

I've wondered where Mick got the money from! He's never been portrayed as a gangster type and I've no idea how he had all that cash. With Phil we're just supposed to believe Phil is "dodgy" or a gangster and is off doing crimes and making money off screen. I remember when he couldn't afford to pay Richie but then had money. I suppose the money just comes and goes!

He is by far the biggest joke on the show.

TPTB do not expect us to think too hard about where he got all of his money from.

For example are you really allowed to leave the country when on bail for attempted murder?

Philth did and returned with a load of cash (presumably from 'owning' the Cosa Nostra or some other such tosh).

The most incredulous storyline was him getting custody of Lexi. Phil as a character is just worn out. What I find bizarre is with all the moaning on here he seems to get a free pass.

Not from me.

Even more bizarre is the free pass TPTB give him - the character is now totally and utterly ridiculous.
