Whatever happened to Marco Polo?

We're all complaining about how The Underwater Menace doesn't seem to be getting a DVD release this year but aren't we also forgetting the Marco Polo found episode rumours?

The same rumour which correctly claimed that Enemy Of The World and Web Of Fear had been found?

Surely we should, therefore, be asking what's happened to Marco Polo?

I speculate the most obvious answer: it wasn't found, and was just rumour.

If it was that simple, how come the rumour was right about Enemy Of The World and The Web Of Fear and not Marco Polo?

I wonder if there's been some sort of legal issues with the latter.

The clue's in the word "rumour", quite honestly.

He died in 1324 and took the secret of the missing tapes with him.

There were rumours about Macra Terror, Power Of The Daleks and Daleks' Masterplan too - but anyone can start a rumour. And plenty of people do.
Without any proof, basically the actual episodes being returned to the archives, stories of more discovered episodes are nothing but wishful thinking.

How can there be legal issues when the story hasn't actually been found?

Nobody knows for sure they HAVEN'T been found, given how secretive the BBC are about Doctor Who at the moment.

Well you could say that about all 90+ episodes if ya wanted then!

I think now's the time to accept that, yeah, there aren't any more that've been found.

But the point is, the same guy who said Enemy Of The World and Web Of Fear had been found stated Marco Polo was part of the same batch of missing episodes.

In your world, has nobody ever been a bit wrong before?

I don't believe the omnirumour anymore but I definitely believe the Marco Polo part of the Enemy Of The World/Web Of Fear rumour.

There has been evidence to suggest Marco Polo has been found such as:

1. Enemy Of The World and The Web Of Fear becoming reality (two serials which were part of the same rumour).

2. A Marco Polo commentary was recorded at a convention.

3. DWM published a article recently about Waris's Marco Polo documents. Coincidence? I think not.

4. The Underwater Menace's constant delay on DVD and eventual removal from the 2015 schedule. Could it be to make way for Marco Polo on DVD?

In my world, I take people more seriously if they say something and it turns out to be right. Especially if the other part of the thing s/he says isn't even mentioned at all as if they're keeping something big secret.

1. People can be wrong.

2. Was it? Got a source for this?

3. Coincidence? Eh? What? They've published lots of new-found odds and ends lately. They've also published a feature with Carole Ann Ford reading some of Verity's old diaries - does this mean they've found another Verity Lambert-era episode? No, it doesn't. You're doing 2+2 and getting 17.

4. No.

Oh, Sean. You're never going to accept that maybe someone was wrong this time, are you?

Erm yeah but: https://twitter.com/Paulsie74/status/374242490229862400

So, it was at a convention... he likely just shared some info with fans as they watched the recon. *rolls eyes*

It was mentioned on Gallifrey Base??
Well....
It MUST be true then, because no-one there would post rumours and lies and stories they made up...

(where's that rolls eyes smiley when you need it?)

I've heard a rumour that Cristopher Eccleston has got the episodes but won't let the BBC have them because he hates Doctor Who and its fans so, so much. Even worse, the bounder has written "Dr Who" in felt tip on every can. He has said that he will wipe off the offensive abbreviation and give them back when people start being nice to him on forums.

It is therefore very, very unlikely that we will ever see them.

There was a rumour in the mirror that the episodes existed as a fan had recorded the off air episodes on a cine camera and the bbc had matched the silent film to to the existing audio track. Too much time has now passed for me to believe in this rumour. The underwater menace however is different. The animation of episode 1 and 4 has been abandoned and they do not seem to want to release with a telesnap recon despite all the dvd extras being ready to go. Shame really.
