Jukka Perko + Iiro Rantala : Love is Beautiful
Doghouse Riley

Finnish duo, pianist and alto sax player. From their CD "Two to Tango," which like many albums will not cause so much as a ripple in the music industry. But I like this.

Thank you for posting this, i think it's beautiful - i really like this type of jazz.

I've not heard of these two before, i must check them out further.

I think that the Scandinavian countries (Sweden in particular) have produced some really melodic sounding jazz musicians since the 1940s, & two Swedes in particular that i like are Lars Gullin & Arne Domnerus.

I try to add a few jazz artists of which I've heard, each week, to achieve a bit of balance on this board, that seems to be dominated, by never ending threads about Madonna. I'd have no problem with people posting about her, if they'd only all use the same thread.

If you scroll back through this board you'll find plenty of others I've added, but they quickly bleed off the front page

The problem in this country now is that jazz hardly gets a look in.
In the early seventies there was a regular programme each week on BBC TV from Ronnie Scotts Club.

Now the music scene is completely dominated by pop and Simon Cowell and the like, as is for the most part TV.

Jools Holland's programme does have the occasional jazz musician/singer, but most of the other stuff I find forgettable.
Though to be fair there is some jazz on BBC radio.

Check out my Barcelona thread.

P.S.

if you like piano and alto sax combinations, check out Art Pepper and George Cables.
This is from a CD I have and have enjoyed for years. But there are plenty of others.

This is beautiful too - I must try & find this album!

I love late period Art Pepper, & George Cables seems to be the perfect accompanist for him.

I don't know if you've heard The two albums True Blues, & Blues for the Fisherman (you may even have them), which were recorded live in concert at Ronnie Scott's in 1980, & released by Mole Jazz (they are probably out of print now) - imo they are great.

Arts' widow Laurie released the session as a 4 CD set a few years ago on her Widow's Taste Label, & the analogue tapes have been transferred in high quality to CD.

Thanks for that, I'll look it up.
My wife and I in our late teens, before we were married, were members of Ronnie Scott's first club. We had single figure membership numbers, I having seen an advert in the Melody Maker for it before it opened. It cost me 7/6d each to join.

I like that.........it's similar to the things I've been listening to recently. Piano and Sax just go together like strawberries and cream !

I'm just getting started on proper jazz following the Barcelona thread.........one of the Sant Andreu covers led to checking out the Miles Davis album 'Kind of Blue'

Since then I've been listening to Miles Davis, Lester Young and Teddy Wilson, John Coltrane, Art Tatum and Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon.........and others

I've never really listened to this kind of jazz before so I tend to listen to the same album four of five times to get the flow of it.......I can usually tell straight away if it's worth persevering with or just move on........

My absolute favourite track at the moment is Lester Young and Teddy Wilson 'I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan'

Glad that you're getting into the music - there's so much to discover & enjoy - that's a lovely tune you've linked to as well (imo).

If you like Coltrane, try this it's from an album I have called "The Gentle Side of John Coltrane." It features the singer Johnny Harman on several tracks.

This is my all-time favourite tune, I've got it by over a dozen different artists, including Sinatra. I've that 45rpm single on one of my vinyl jukeboxes.

Yep!

We went there on a lot of week-day evenings, as entrance during the week was free and it was warmer than our flat!

I think membership now is over £300.

All great links in this thread. That Coltrane piece, in particular, is a highlight. Love it.

This is the Sinatra version of that tune, playing on one of my vinyl jukeboxes, which I maintain myself.
