My very cool daughter recently introduced me to " Emmenez-Moi" by Charles Aznavour and I'm playing it over and over. I love it.
I'd like to listen to some other french language songs of a similar period.

Can anyone make any recommendations?

Thanks.

The classic was always "La Mer," by Charles Trenet.

Though Bobby Darin made a reasonable attempt at the English language version.

My favourite by any artist, is this by Halie Loren, a really sexy voice, particularly the verse she sings in French..

Thanks for that, Doghouse.

Obviously you'd want some Edith Piaf

Je ne regrette rien is might fine but I like 'La Vie en Rose'.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFzViYkZAz4

Bit more early pop is Brigitte Bardot......Moi Je Joue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js3t51n3EQc

Even if you don't like the song you can always gawp at the pictures.......

I deliberately avoided mentioning Edith Piaf as I never liked her voice!

I'd rather have Vanessa Paradis.
(Now, it definitely qualifies as an "oldie").
But I couldn't imagine trying to play a saxophone wearing gloves!

This Sacha Distel song later became a hit for Tony Bennett and other English language singers.

And the notorious Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin:

Unfortunate, because most of my favourite French language songs are by female artists. Give these a listen anyway, if they're not your tasse de thé , then fair enough.

France Gall:-

Laisse Tombez Les Filles

Poupée De Cire Poupée De Son

Françoise Hardy:-

Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles

Mon Amie La Rose

Le Temps De L'amour

Et Même

Petula Clark (singing in French):-

Ya Ya Twist

Chariot

Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" is absolutely beautiful - listen to Nina Simone's version, too, it's heartbreaking.

And as mentioned before, Françoise Hardy's 'Tous Les Garçons et Les Filles" is absolutely wonderful - such beautiful lyrics.

At last! One I like ( even though it's a lady )...

Francoise Hardy " Mon Amie La Rose". ( Thanks, JohnnyForget )

None of the others - and I've listened to dozens this weekend - have really got that Je ne sais quoi that I'm after.
I think the answer is that Emmenez Moi is just such a brilliant song ( i.m.o) and nothing else is really matching up.
But I have taken a fancy to another Charles Aznavour number;
https://youtu.be/hWLc0J52b2I

love his performance in that vid, too.

I quite like Johnny Hallyday's version of Black is Black - Noir C'est Noir.

Straight out of Austin Powers.

While I was on your link I discovered another Johnny Halliday I quite liked;
"Retiens La Nuit".

Can anyone identify the song at 34,7 on this video? It's quite a French classic I think.

J'ai deux amours
Mon pays et Paris
Par eux toujours
Mon coeur est ravi

A lovely version - in French - by the French-sounding, but American, Madeleine Peyroux.

Or if you want a proper oldie, here's Josephine Baker's original from 1930.
