He cost West Brom around £6m, and he was their player of the season last year, so he'd be more expensive than that. I'd guess they'd be looking for at least £10m. That's not cheap for a centre half.

Definitely hope we don't get Evans, he's just not good enough for the level we should be at. When Mustafi rumours are flying around, Evans just doesn't compare.

Indeed, in a way, it's a shame BFG didn't get injured earlier, Heiko Westerman was available for free until Ajax signed him. He'd have been a great alternative considering he didn't cost anything. 27 caps for Germany (4 goals) is no mean feat.

Think we may have missed a trick missing out on Ashley Williams, A snip at £10M. Looks Everton bound now. Could have done a job and chips in with the odd goal. Fair enough if Wenger has somebody else lined up but we'll see.

Knee injury. I think he will be susceptible to "compensating" injuries as a result of trying to look after his ankles. Will put more pressure on other parts of his body.

Jonny Evans (apparently he's valued at £15m) and Ashley Williams ARE NOT good enough for us. I might have taken Williams a few years ago, but not now, I don't care that he is "only" £10m. He's almost 32! Would rather pay double that plus whatever for 8 years younger Mustafi. Can't believe Arsenal fans are even entertaining the ideas that we've "missed out" on Williams or should go in for Evans.

I don't think that many Arsenal fans would consider Evens or Williams a good addition, although if you're not going to spend the money on say a Mustafi, something can be said for getting them in as a back up...

But aren't Chambers and Holding back ups? Not to mention we have Gabriel too. Or are we going to reduce them to being back up to the back ups. I don't see the point of buying another back up, we need someone to take Mertesacker's place.

Yes, I suppose Chamber and Holding could be seen as back up, but persoanlly I'd class them as 'youngsters' though. I'd definitely class Gabriel as back up.

Agree that we'd be better off buying a proper replacement for BFG, although I feel we should be focusing on getting someone like Mahrez and a striker (say Lacazette) before we strengthen the defense.

Gabriel isn't good enough for us but he's here. So what if Williams is nearly 32? He's a no nonsense defender who's got years of experience and doesn't bottle challenges like some of our players. I don't know anything about this Mustafi so can't comment. It's academic anyway re Williams.

From what i've seen, Mustafi is a better defender than Williams, and even though he's double the price we'd get more out of him due to his age. Do you not think if Williams was good enough for a "top" team, he would have been snapped up by one of them by now?
