Hi, I need advice on buying a new 40 - 42 inch tv, my last tv was a KDL 37V5500
it has a great picture, but wouldn't play back vids via usb, so I looking for a set that plays vids via USB flash or hdd not interested 3D
your help is appreciated.

As you already have a Sony, then look at the current Sony 40-42's.

You can usually connect an external HDD to them, and use them as a crude PVR as well.

Given that you might hang on to it for a while I'd look in the £450-£500 bracket, in particular I'd look at LG 42UB820V £459 at Richer Sounds, get very good reviews, does what you want and is 4K ready, if you use Netflix. You get some shows in 4K, not so much a big issue on a small screen but more pixels never hurt anyone..4K is also about a wider colour gamut and depth of field too. If I was interested the market for a 42" TV I'd be of to RS today..

And you are in the wrong month

Try looking at thread dates before posting pointlessly in old threads.
