EE - If Sam Mitchell was recasted again back to Kim Medcalf, would you buy it?
It seems the majority of this forum agree that Sam Mitchell worked best under Kim Medcalf, and that giving the role back to Danniella Westbrook was a flop, which ruined the character.
It's very likely that eventually we will see the character of Sam Mitchell again, as the Mitchells will most likely always have a role in EastEnders. But would it work if the role was give back to Kim Medcalf again, and we simply forgot that Sam from 2009 to 2010 ever happened? It's not like Danniella came back for a prolonged period of time - she only returned for about four months in 2009 and then a couple of weeks the following year and that was it. Would Kim Medcalf as Sam work again? Would you buy it? Or do you think the part is ultimately Danniella's now? I for one, would happily buy it

Yes, I remember KM stint better then DW and she is the far better actress for the role imo if they ever brought Sam back then it should be KM not sure what John Yorke was thinking back in 2009, DW is too much of a loose cannon.

Kim was very good in the role and if Sam was to return I would prefer Kim in the role.
Daniella sadly is in a mess right now. |

I wouldn't buy it, even though I preferred Kim in the role. It'd be one re-recast too far.

I would as I loved Kim Medcalf in the role . Danielle Westbrook was atrocious upon her return and really regressed Sam.

I'd throw a party for her if she came home!
Bringing back Westbrook goes down as one of the biggest what-the-**** moments of Santer's reign. |

I liked Kim as Sam, but now we have Ronnie, Roxy, Sharon and Lola as prominent female Mitchells, we don't need her.

when Kim took over the role of Sam, i believed it, i believed Sam after time away from walford had grown up and Kim took the role to new levels, especially with the whole dirty Den thing. Bringing Danniella back was such a stupid idea, no fault of her own, but her 'Sam' was done, it just made no sense to have her back in the role, and was an idiotic decision, but unfortunately this show inparticular has been plagued by idiotic producers. |

I'd definitely buy it.
As I've said earlier on this forum, it was already ridiculous reverting back to Danniella so even though it may seem ridiculous recasting Kim Medcalf as Sam again, I'd see it as DTC (or whoever the producer is at the time) rectifying a major wrong. Sam Mitchell was the original Mitchell girl and I would have loved to have seen Kim's Sam interact with Ronnie and Roxy. I think she's the balance between the two - she had the maturity of Ronnie but the naivety of Roxy. If Kim was ever brought back (which I've wanted ever since she left in 2005) then it'd be best for her Sam to return with the same personality she had back in 2002. She has to have a bit of Danniella's Sam to make it as believable as possible but ultimately she should play Sam how she did originally. Kim's Sam has to be one of the most successful recasts ever in British Soap - especially considering she was taking over from an actress playing a MASSIVE character for a decade and had major storylines. That is a testament to Kim's acting in my opinion. Bring her back! |

I can understand why Daniella was chosen as Sam in 2009 as she had worked with Patsy and Sid years prior. Now that they've both left I do think that bringing Kim back would be the best choice.

They've backed the character of Sam into a corner, and she can never be a main character on the show again.
They bought Daniella back, but she will never be strong enough to hold a storyline of her own - can you imagine her throughout the Den murder storyline? It would have been painful. She'll be nothing more than a recurring guest, popping back for minor stints at the most. |

Kim Medcalf all the way-Daniella admitted last year if Sam ever returned she wouldn't be played by her.

Where did she say this?
To be clear Daniella said that she herself isn't returning but if the character returned it wouldn't be played by herself Daniella. |

On twitter in reply to a fan-there was a thread on it last year.
![]() So it seems that if they do want to bring Sam back, Kim would be the only option, which IMO is great. Surely they wouldn't give the role to yet another actress? |

I personally could live with it being another new actress but I suspect many fans couldn't but my preference is for Kim.
If they found someone who had similar looks to Danniella or Kim, and was believable as a Mitchell/Peggy's daughter, it could potentially work...but it would take A LOT of convincing for many viewers |

Absolutley the only issue would be the product of Jack Branning tagging along at her side. That would be the only unfortunate part. As long as we never see Danniella again I'm also open to another recast that isn't Kim as long as it has more Kim's type of Sam.
Another one I'd be happy retro recasting would be Peter Beale, I think Thomas could still work in that role and work with new Lauren. |

I honestly don't get the fascination with Kim's portrayal of this character. There was a thread wondering the exact same thing not two weeks ago http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2067184
The way people go on it's like she is a modern legend of the show when the biggest storyline she had was dominated by another character (Chrissie). I never bought the recast, Kim was too posh to play a Mitchell and imo didn't have the same chemistry with Phil, Peggy and Ricky. It's amazing that a change of wardrobe can lead so many people to believe that a character has matured as well. For all people talk about the Den storyline, the teen elopement storyline with Sam and Ricky was watched by upwards of 15 million viewers and in those days young EE stars were all over the press like pop stars. They were EE's very own Scott and Charlene. If you were to look at Sam's 1995-1996 and 1999-2000 stints then recasting the character doesn't seem so preposterous but she was more effective in her earlier stint. |
