Swapping the HDMI cable could most certainly cause issues like this, when the box is on. As you say, the HDMI link is probably partly up when in active standby. You might have been able to switch the TV off and on instead, although I know Sony models from the last few years do not fully switch off for 15 or so minutes after entering standby. An HDMI switch might be advisable, although some of those can give of RF interference.

It probably does explain why it reverted to 1080p as it likely tried to renegotiate after loosing the 1080i connection. Coincidentally, mine has automatically changed from 1080p to 576p a couple of times this week, having never had the issue before.

An HDMI switch might be advisable
Ordered one about half an hour ago. Even if we only use it for a month or so it'll save all the messing about
