Delta & the Bannermen
Ulsterguy

I watched Delta & the Bannermen last night. I was wondering about the Police telephone box that the two Americans phoned from. The story is set in Wales, there were no Met phone boxes in Wales. Are we to presume it was the TARDIS?

Also, I think I agree with some that Gironwy was a time lord.

I have a real soft spot for Delta. It's bundles of fun!

Wasn't a TARDIS, so if you're right, its a continuity error...

With Lewis on the story. Sunny, funny, silly and enjoyable.

I think it's terrible
I usually try to stick up for 7th Doctor but that ones just awful imo. Especially the Rocker with the bike he's just like the wimpiest Rock n Roller ever, even worse than Cliff Richard.

Still I might be in the minority as a few seem to like it,and I can appreciate the "silliness" argument.

I did like Ray and wish she would have stayed on as companion.

I didn't enjoy McCoys era - but this was one of the few that I enjoyed! It was so enjoyable in its own little way - the holiday camp -HI De Hi etc. The alien woman, the handsome young man , the old man with the bees. It was a fantasy story to end them all!
Those Bannermen were a joke TBH! But it was a light-hearted story with a happy ending and a musical one to-boot! I loved this one. It made more sense than some of those other weird non-sensical pieces of crap that they churned out!!

Loved it - it was just a good fun romp.

As a serious, no-nonsense Doctor Who fan in my younger years, I hated this.

Now, as an adult, it's a breath of fresh air. It's very grown-up and very silly at the same time. Just like DW should be.

Here's to the future. Love is the answer.

There were plenty of met police boxes in and around Wales from the 1930s to 1960s

The McCoy era was lamentable. Personally I wish it didn't exist and I'd rather dig out my own liver with a rusty spoon than watch most of it again. That said, if pushed, I would say this one isn't quite as dire as most McCoy stuff. There's a breeziness about it which mitigates against much of the crud and it's mercifully brief.

So, can we assume this was better than, say, The Happiness Patrol or Time & The Rani?
Then I totally agree with you Irma!!

Time and the Rani is McCoy's worst by a long margin, but this story is one of those that makes me enjoy the two years that followed even more. At the appropriate age, I loved it to pieces.

I think McCoy was very good overall, especially once his stories just get a bit weird (Greatest Show, Ghost Light, Curse of Fenric).

I will not watch this story at all, as I absolutely cannot stand Ken Dodd!

It's like George Formby with When I'm Cleaning Windows. My father cannot stand listening to it!

Shame really that I won't watch DATB, as there weren't many Seventh Doctor stories filmed because of the 1989 cancelation.

I've got DATB on DVD, if anything, to complete my collection of 7th Doctor stories that were televised up to December 1989.

I may give it a go, if I can try and get past Ken Dodd being in it, and try to focus on the rest of what was going on.

I don't think I've seen this since it was originally transmitted but I seem to remember (and I could be wrong) that the special effects in episode one were actually quite good (the TARDIS saving the bus from crashing etc).

I think McCoy's first season is interesting because it is clearly taking the show in a new direction. The tone is far more along the lines of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or (even) Monty Python.

But I think this is gone by McCoy's second season when the show begins to take a more serious tone again - although The Happiness Patrol could easily have been a 7th Doctor/Mel story from this season.

Delta and the Bannermen stands out for me as being probably the silliest Doctor Who story ever - and I'm not saying that as a criticism, just a point of view. However, interesting that there's a lot of content in this story - particularly in episode one - which would not be out of place in new Who. There are parallels with (for instance) some of the more comical aspects of "The End of the World"

I think Ken Dodd is quite amusing here, and honestly, if it's just him you're concerned about, without spoilering stuff, I really wouldn't let his presence put you off as it's only a cameo!

As quite a serious young fan in 1987, I had been worried about a Who does Hi de Hi with stunt casting story, but, unlike a few of my probably more serious fan friends at the time, as I said above, I found it great fun. Some FM's will think this is faint praise, but I think it's Sylvester's best performance of the season. There are scenes that suggest the melancholy clown that developed, and the part where he shyly tries to comfort a heartbroken Ray are particularly sweet. There's a nice connection between the Doctor and the Hugh Lloyd character too.
