High Res Audio
Just discovered the site and I have to say it has great potential. https://www.highresaudio.com/ There seems to be a decent enough selection of music in various genres, the prices aren't too bad (mostly), and best of all is their quality guarantee. Quote:
Quality-guarantee: The high-resolution music, that you purchase from us is guaranteed native (true original) 24bit Studio Master material. We have signed with all music labels, artists and artist-agencies contracts to assure exactly that. We do not accept nor offer up-sampled or converted material. Our quality-control checks and evaluates each album with a professional studio software! You will receive and buy only true original 24bit Studio Master files from us.
https://www.highresaudio.com/texte.php?ca_id=548They don't accept up-sampled or converted music and it would appear that they have no problem telling labels to go back and do better. This was posted on their Facebook account last week. Quote:
Please Note: that we have rejected the Studio Masters for Deep Purple - Shades of Deep Purple / Deep Purple - The Book of Taliesyn / Deep Purple - Deep Purple which we have received from Warner Music. Our measurement and analysis of the source files clearly showed, that these are not genuine 96 kHz! So, we have requested to receive one once. Unfortunately, we have not received any feedback in order to offer you three albums on the release date, which is today 01.05.2015. Thank you for your understand!
If only more sites would take quality control as seriously.

The problem is I would be buying stuff I already own in one format or another and whether I would actually hear any improvement is somewhat debatable.
In reviews I've read, when compared to CD and 320 kBit/s MP3 in double blind tests, most people fail to spot the High Res version and struggle to find any real differences between the three formats. |

I can't tell the difference between CD and 320 MP3 myself, but I can tell the difference between 320 MP3 from say 7 Digital and a 192KHz/24 bit version from High Res Audio on my Fiio X5 and AKG cans.
I can definitely tell the difference between these to masters of this album. The 2nd is just so much better. https://stonerider.bandcamp.com/albu...rsion-download https://stonerider.bandcamp.com/albu...aster-download |

I've no problem with many YouTube uploads. Yes, the site compresses them, but a lot depends on the quality of the equipment used to upload the file. "Official videos" are usually quite good.
But I'm more interested in the music, little of it contemporary, so some are uploaded either from an old record or a track from a CD using a photo of the album or artist instead of a video. Here the quality can be miles apart, so you have to search for duplicates and compare file sizes and quality. Downloaded on as an mp3 and played on decent equipment, it's hard for most people to distinguish between what is a track from one of your CDs, a YouTube download, or a recording from an old file sharing site. |
