I agree as I said I don't see how it's girly at all.

It may not be like Arrow but does seem more like Flash were it doesn't take itself to serious.

The preview does emphasise that a bit too much but it is trying to show all the aspects of the series. The 2 minute trailer sells it much better as a superhero series. If Arrow and Flash trailers showed the non superhero parts too they would also be pretty cheesy and 'girly'.

To be fair to 'i am god', I can see what he/she's talking about but wouldn't one also compare Supergirl to 'The Devil Wears Prada' or as my brother put it 'The Kryptonian Wears Prada'? With the super b*tchy boss who's meant to be that way from the comics from other comments in this thread.

It's only part of the show and could be quite fun, the rest of it looks just as good as 'The Flash' with a slightly more 'girly' feel e.g. Kara reaction to being on the news.

The 2 minute trailer seems to be blocked now but CBS should probably have put that one up first; lots more superhero footage in there with the fight with the villain.

Whether "girly" or "womanly" I think a female superhero needs to display some femininity and not just be a female kicking ass like a male. Otherwise we might as well just have a male superhero.

With good writing it should be possible to create someone who is both strong (in some sense) and feminine.

I think this could work if the idea is to show her transitioning from "girly" to "womanly" behaviour as the series progresses. I.e., she matures after transitioning to Supergirl and the responsibilities it brings.

Maybe it's more to do with the way they handle women in female led TV shows.
Because when it comes to films American viewing audiences are very accepting of female leads if the material is good enough.
So I think it's a bit much to label Americans as being sexist based on the criteria that female led action TV shows don't do that well. It may be more due to the quality of the show itself.

And if we go back to the dark old days of the 1970s where everybody was evil and sexist, shows like the original Bionic Woman and Wonder Woman were popular mainstream entertainment and are well loved female led action TV shows to this day.
Then around the late nineties early noughties we had Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dark Angel, which were well received.

Sometimes TV shows fail because they're not very good, or too niche or too obscure, whether they be female led or male led.

Well that's the sort of thing I was reminded of when watching the trailer, and it feels that others drew the same conclusion before I even entered this thread.
It just has that sort of tone I associate with those types of shows.

I think it made a difference due to cutting out more of the office scenes, and the change of music. God the music in the background in the first clip was part of the reason why it came across the way it did.
Perhaps CBS took note of the initial reaction to the first trailer and realised that they'd better do something about it.

Based on the second trailer I think it sells the show a lot better, and could do well depending on what the actual show is like.

Yep, as you say, the lack of office scenes, specifically the lack of Cat, and the change in music completely changes the feel of the show.

I read somewhere that 'The Flash' also had a pilot episode summary too last year that didn't fair too well? In any case, I think it's possible to cut a 'The Flash' or 'Arrow' episode to be very soapy too.

Well from the trailer I like some parts and DESPISE others. I like the light tone and humour. I dislike the feminine agenda that is really not about equality but about typecasting women into specific roles for no purpose other to make them girly .
Al this ditsy blond, power hungry lady boss stuff is a no for me.

I also don't know if it is just me but I've noticed my some of my more liked characters in comics seem to get an ethnicity change in televised media. That's another thing I dislike too. The changing a character's ethnicity for the sake of diversity. Couldn't diversify the female aspect to something original? Oh no. This shows idea of going outthere is to have token black guy.

I really hope it's not a cliche ridden mess but all signs say it is.
Would have been nice to have a female led comic book tv show that wasn't so sexist and racist. I might go and re-watch Fark Angel or Witchblade TV series instead. They had the balance so much better.

I'd agree with that, it had a real Wonder Woman, 6 Million Dollar Man/Woman kind of vibe to it imho. More Smallville than the current crop.

1) It looks a more light hearted approach than the Man of Angst

2) Action sequences look decent and Supergirl looks the part.

3) I am not on board with Jimmy sorry "James" who is obviously going to be the patronising git who passes on advice from old misery guts to Kara. Superman hasn't got time to speak to his home planets only other survivor ? I understand the restrictions on having Supes in this but this tactic of Jimmy in the middle is going to get old fast.

I can see it now, Kara is in desperate need of help and Jimmy saying something helpful like "your cousin says you need to stand on your own two feet"

I disagree. I think male and female superheroes should be written the same regardless of gender.

I think the majority of people would agree with this.

I don't. Or not so in the case of what I've seen of the Supergirl trailer.
It just strikes me as being so very intended to be feminine just because it's a female led show. Now if there were plenty of shows with a female character in an action based lead it wouldn't be a problem. As you know, variety.
The fact that this is a rarity and the femininity and female stereotypes are so thrown down our throats is what I dislike.

Supergirl and Sarah Jane Smith have very little in common as characters other than their gender.

If they are written with equal respect despite the gender of the character isn't that far preferable to dumb blond female superheroes and muscle bound angst ridden male superheroes?

Just because a character is female does not mean you have to give them an automatic boyfreind, give them a silly job, make them long haired and busty, add doses and doses of fluff.

Just because a character is make does not mean you have to make them as ripped as Arnie in his prime, give them a girlfriend they have to lie to and protect, make them a playboy and tons of angst.

Why bother? Because there are NO female superheroes on TV for young girls to aspire to. Just because you (a man) seem to reduce women on TV to 'eye candy' doesn't mean that everyone else does. I'm a woman and love superhero shows, but see almost no women, and certainly none in a lead role, in any of those shows that have the power, ability or 'specialness' of The Flash, Arrow or the countless other superhero male leads on network TV right now.

They can be written exactly the same, just with a female lead, because it gives aspiration to countless women watching the show. Of course it looks too girly for you - that's the point! You're very likely not used to seeing a show like this.

I look forward to seeing this show, especially if it allows Kara to be as 'girly' as she likes, whilst saving planeloads of people and having all the superhuman characteristics of her male cousin! I think it's just as important a message that feminist stories can be feminine. But that ABSOLUTELY doesn't mean that Supergirl loses looking strong or powerful, in fact it's the opposite. That's what we're seeing with the trailer, and is making all the male geeks shudder in terror! I'm old enough to remember that Buffy garnered almost exactly the same sort of criticism - and she was also a female lead who was both feminine and powerful. It makes male viewers a bit worried, that combination, I've found!!!!

Because some of us just want to watch superheroes, not superheroes who are portrayed as unusual because they're female.

Both are heroines. Sarah Jane Smith is the correct way to do a female TV protagonist IMO.
