It just came to me.

In 2005 at 46 Madonna had one of the biggest hits of her entire career with Hung Up

In 1998 at 49 Cher had the biggest hit of her career with Believe

Kylie is 46 now - does she have it in her to create a Believe or Hung Up moment or is her music career now pretty much dead ?

I know Hung Up and Believe were worldwide success stories but Kylie has never really had much success on a global scale so that is why I limited it to UK..

I think Cant Get You Out of My Head was a global hit. Did pretty well in America too.

I don't care if she ever has a Global smash again, but secretly, i'd like to see her have another big hit single with the right song. It really would need to be a corker though.

Miss K has everything it takes. Believe and Hung Up were created with a large team of the hottest producers in the world.

Who produced Believe? it was just a bit of autotune! The lyrics have far more impact when slowed down like that girl from X Factor showed.

Hung Up - Stuart Price is pretty much a non entity isn't he? although he did produce all of Kylie's Aphrodite album.

I think ageism against female music stars is an issue that needs more discussion.

Not now streaming is included and no CD single - the charts are more youth driven than ever

No.

The charts have changed so much these past few years it'll just never happen. Relating her age to the age of artists 10 and 20 years ago isn't realistic anymore. It's a shame.

Believe was co-written by the guy from Xenomania who wrote/produced some of the best pop songs of the 00's (including all of Girls Alouds stuff). Mark Taylor (the producer) has a large catalogue of work too.

Stuart Price has produced loads of stuff since Madonna. Including Pet Shop Boys, The Killers, Scissor Sisters, Take That (including their HUGELY successful Progress album) along with loads of others. So no... he's not a 'non-entity'

Can't Get You Out of My Head was her "Believe" or "Hung Up"-style comeback even if she was much younger.

Kylie, Madonna, and Cher will NEVER have a hit again. A shame but it is what it is.

LOL @ this transparent attempt to belittle Kylie. The world doesn't consist of America. She has had plenty of hits in Europe and Australia and you know it.

The issue of female ageism in the music industry was not as big of a deal in 1998 or 2005. To compare the music industry of 2015 to back then just to put Kylie down is ridiculous and reeks of an obvious agenda.

With streaming having more and more impact on the charts, this is only going to make it more difficult for certain types of artists to score a bit hit.

I think the only way Kylie Minogue could possibly get another UK #1 is if she collaborated with a very popular artist like Sam Smith or Ed Sheeran.

If Kylie, Madonna and Cher all teamed up and released a charity single it probably wouldn't go to #1 either.

The comforting thing is that both Kylie's and Madonna's careers will probably always be rather high in the music history books - the charts are all about "here today gone tomorrow"

1. Kylie might be the same age Madonna was when she hit #1 with Hung Up in 2005, but the chart is a lot different now. Has Madonna had a top 3 hit in the UK this decade like Kylie? Nope. Has she had a single that's sold early 400,000 copies in the UK this decade like Kylie? Nope.

2. Kylie's had her Believe and Hung Up moment. Can't Get Yout Out of My Head topped the charts in nearly every country it entered and is still one of the best selling singles worldwide.

3. Can't Get You Out of My Head (and Believe by Cher) sold a million copies in the UK, something Madonna has never managed to do. Hung Up didn't come close to selling a million copies.

4. Can't Get You Out of My Head peaked at #7 in the US, the same position Hung Up peaked at.

5. It's not like Madonna's scoring big hits anymore. Her last top 10 hit in the UK was in 2009, and she hasn't come close to getting another one since. Rebel Heart has been certified Silver, the same as Kiss Me Once.

Nice try.

Thanks for posting a comment that is on topic with what I asked. Good point. What do you think can be done to bridge the ageism gap?

When will Madonna have another #1 smash hit in the UK? It’s been seven years since 4 Minutes. I’m aware that that’s not as long ago as Kylie’s last UK #1 (Slow - 2003), but it’s not like Madonna is still the hit maker she used to be. When will Celine Dion have another UK #1 single? What about Mariah Carey? Will Janet Jackson ever have one? Your attempts at trying to belittle Kylie’s career are both transparent and amusing. Why don’t you pick on someone whose career actually ended by the time the 1980s were over? Or maybe you could just go and get a life.

Madonna is 56 years old, that's only four years older than what Cher was when Believe was a huge hit in 1998. Why hasn't Madonna been able to hit #1 all around the world in her 50s like Cher did (Madonna was 49 when 4 Minutes topped the charts)? I’ll tell you why, it was a different industry back then just like it was in 2005. Anyone would think Madonna was still scoring big hits in the UK. Her highest charting single so far this decade is Living for Love which reached the lofty heights of #26. All the Lovers (#3 in 2010) was huge in comparison, it also charted inside the top 10 in over ten other countries around the world. It would have actually hit #1 in the UK had the physical and digital copies of the single been released in the same week. And let's not pretend like Rihanna is never going surpass Madonna's tally of UK #1 singles.

Come back to me when Madonna actually manages to a) sell a million copies of a single in the UK, and b) has another top 3 hit that sells nearly 400,000 copies in the UK. What about another top 20 hit? Kylie's had three more of those so far this decade. Until then....

I think Kylie's hey day is well an truly over and has been since Fever (when she peaked) but she could still get a #1 in maybe Australia or the UK if she got a got a good marketing team and if it's a decent catchy song.

The problem with Kiss Me Once as it hasn't has had very good marketing and the songs are pretty naff and I say this as a big fan of Kylie. Having said that, Kylie is still doing pretty well especially after having a career for this long. It's not to be sneezed at/

Into The Blue was a great track. I'm upset it didn't do better. It deserved to.

Oh dear you seem really angry about this when I basically asked a question about female pop stars having their biggest hits in their 40s.

I think it's possible (I like to think it is too). It would have to be a fantastic song though, as good, if not better, than Can't Get You Out Of My Head. She'd have to promote the hell out of it though, because radio just isn't on her side anymore. Radio 2 will always be there for her, and Capital played Into The Blue, so I'm hopeful they haven't dropped her completely. Radio 1 is out of the question, unless she made some sort of underhand *deal* with the BBC in return for her judging on The Voice again (not going to happen though).

She was very close to top ten just last year (and would have been if the week she released wasn't so busy), so top ten/top five could still happen.

Edit: (purely based on her comparable age) Kylie is much more likely to get a #1 than Madonna or Cher.

Quite and Im glad someone understood the base of the thread.

For starters, Cher was 52 when she released Believe in 1998, not 49. She holds the record for being the oldest female to top the Hot 100. At least try and get the facts right before starting a thread like this.

If Madonna was 46 today, do you think she would be able to hit #1 on the Top 40? I highly doubt it. The music industry was in a completely different place when she was 46 in 2005. She lucked out by being born ten years before Kylie Minogue. I doubt Hung Up would even reach #1 nowadays. Dumb argument if there ever was one.

Kylie fans so angry and insulting people just over a question. Jeez.

Its no different to the many multiple threads you have started on other artists. Is Kylie off limits?

Into The Blue was a good track, I just felt it was not on par with her singles.

I think it's a good track and a good lead single, (compared to 2 Hearts) but not on a par with All The Lovers. The big problem with Into The Blue was the complete lack of promotion. Her first TV appearance (bar a prerecorded This Morning interview) after its release was over two weeks after it was released.

How were the general public meant to know Kylie had a new single out, especially considering the lack of airplay?

As a Kylie fan she may never get another number 1 single, maybe a number 1 album 😃

A few facts about Can’t Get You Out of My Head:

- It hit #1 in 40 countries around the worldwide
- It's sold five million copies worldwide to date (the same as Like a Prayer)
- Despite being released in September 2001 it was the third highest selling single of that year in the UK
- It's the 7th most successful single of the 2000s in the UK, higher than any Madonna single
- It was the most successful single worldwide of 2001. It was #1 on the end of the year chart
- It spent a record-breaking eight weeks at number one on the UK airplay chart and became the first song to garner 3000 radio plays in a single week
- It’s the 75th best-selling single of all time in the UK, selling 1,160,000 copies to date. Hung Up has sold 617,000 copies
- It peaked at #7 on the US Hot 100 and has been certified gold

Kylie’s never had a Believe or Hung Up style hit? Please!

When will Madonna have another super smash UK single?

I recall one of your Kylie threads being locked by a mod a few weeks ago. What’s the matter? Didn’t get enough attention last time? LOL.
