Which characters in soap have turned out completely different to how they were when they began?

I think Ronnie (EE) is shaping out to be one of the most developed and layered characters in soap history. We've had Ibiza Ronnie (2007), Business Ronnie (2007-08), Dark Ronnie (2008-11, 2013-), Miserable Ronnie (2011), Happy Ronnie (2014) and Villain Ronnie (2013, 2015-). We've seen many sides to the character, all portrayed by a very capable actor which makes her possibly one of the most interesting characters to watch.

Ben and Abi have also progressed as characters in EastEnders, in contrast to the likes of Denise and Roxy for example, who haven't really "moved ahead" at all.

Are really heavily developed and so many layers that I can't narrow it down further.

Have to agree, we never know what Ronnie we are going to get, I long for a happy ending for her but it's not coming is it? Samantha Womack is a great actress, she is Ronnie.

Just for fun the most undeveloped character (though it's relatively early days) has to be Mick Carter .. IMO of course

Ronnie immediately sprang to mind as does Janine . Interesting that there aren't many men who you can describe as multi layered/complex . I'd add David Wicks and Michael Moon, as two complex characters.

Ronnie is definitely up there, she's arguably the most three dimensional chatacter Eastenders have ever had

Janine, Ben, Kat, Grant, Shirley, Pat and Stacey are also up there

The one that immediately springs to mind is Cain in Emmerdale.

There is a difference between layered/developed and personality transplant.

What about Ian? Granted, Ian benefits from the fact that he's been around so long, but we've seen about a million different sides to him over the past 30 years.

I actually think Ronnie's a bit of a mess of a character. I like her, and enjoy watching her and Samantha Womack plays her brilliantly, but I feel like they can never decide what to do with the character - they can't decide whether she wants to have the perfect family and be the perfect man, or going around getting involved in all sorts of elaborate murder scehemes. She seems to fluctuate between the two in a matter of episodes. I love watching her, don't get me wrong, but if she was so well developed I think she would have moulded into one of those two categories by now.

Most Layered characters?

Kat Moon and Lola Pearce. You'd need a chisel to remove all that foundation

I'm sure Hollyoaks has a few contenders too.

For Corrie I would name Emily,Ken, Roy,Audrey, Leanne & to a degree Carla, though I do find her 'layers' more than a little confusing sometimes!! The one I definitrly don't agree with others on is Tracy!! She is without question the most one dimensional character in the history of soap imo!!!!

That's exactly how I feel about Ronnie!

Most layered / developed / complex characters

Corrie - Carla Connor

Emmerdale - Cain Dingle

EE - Stacey Slater Ice Skater

Eastenders - Stacey immediately came to mind. What a journey. Kat & Janine also. Ian.

Emmerdale - Charity! Cain, Aaron. I was going to say Debbie but not many of her storylines really stand out to me.

Coronation street - Sally, Sarah & David.

From EE, Kat definitely. She's so complex and well rounded with all these different dimensions that come together in a believable whole.

Also Stacey and Janine. I think Ian out of male characters is the most layered. Ronnie is more messy and inconsistent than well developed imo.

EE: Janine, Ian, Carol, David... Ronnie could and should be, but she's way too inconstant to be classed as well developed; she hasn't been developed outside of the tragic heroine role to be classed as being layered.

ED: Cain, Zak... Nicola, I think has been developed a lot from just being a bitch to someone with more depth.

Neighbours: Karl, Paul, Libby

Corrie - Peter Barlow. Fantastically complex and layered character.
