Why hasn't a Madonna single ever sold a million copies in the UK?

It just came to me.

Madonna has sold the most singles in the UK by a female artist, but none of them have actually sold a million copies. Why? Most of the other big female singers have had one, some two.

Celine Dion - Think Twice, My Heart Will Go On
Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You
Cher - Believe
Kylie Minogue - Especially for You, Can't Get You Out of My Head
Rihanna - Love the Way You Lie, We Found Love, Only Girl (In the World)
Lady Gaga - Poker Face, Bad Romance
Adele - Someone Like You, Rolling in the Deep
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
Jennifer Rush - The Power of Love

Why is Madonna on her lonesome?

Madonna would have had several million selling singles in the UK had The Immaculate Collection not sold close to 4 million copies here.

I suppose this is a response to my Kylie thread which was actually a genuine question designed up discuss ageism but it seems Kylie fans have reacted angrily to it and this is the response!

Maybe Ellie_Arbuckle, LivingForLove and wizzywick can join forces and buy 200,000 copies of Into the Groove.

Why would I want to do that?!

Because it would be nice for you to not have to keep pretending like you don't care.

The UK was one of Madonna’s biggest markets. It’s embarrassing that none of her singles have managed to sell a million sales copies when all of those listed above have. Like a Prayer, Vogue and Hung Up are three of Madonna’s biggest hit singles yet they’ve never come close to selling a million copies in the UK. Why?

It’s amusing to see you taking shots at Kylie despite the fact that Can’t Get You Out of My Head has sold twice as many copies as Hung Up, Especially for You sold twice as many copies as Like a Prayer back in the 1980s, and All the Lovers has sold ten times what Living for Love has this decade.

Madonna might have sold the most singles in the UK by a female artist, but that’s what happens when someone releases over 75 singles in their career. Kylie has sold just over 10 million singles in the UK putting her in third place behind Madonna and Rihanna, it’s not like third place is such a bad place to be.

Let me know when Madonna gets a UK hit on the level of those listed above

I don't need to because I'm not insecure about Madonna's success. Your OTT reaction by starting this thread after I created one asking a genuine question regarding Kylie is rather telling.

I don't need to throw around all Madonna's worldwide sales which completely wipe Kylie off the map just to prove a point. I could but I won't.

Really it embarrassing! She has the most UK number 1s for a female artist, most sales, most top 10 hits etc etc the list goes on what's embarrassing about it. The difference is very few records used to sell a million in the UK as it was based on actual physical sales of a product.
Your ridiculous comparison of Kylie and Madonnas is so flawed as anyone could then fire many more of Madonna's achievements against Kylie. both Madonnas and Kylie have had incredible careers in the UK. Neither one of them threatened by each other or have done anything as artists but show admiration and respect for one another.
Kylie worldwide sale 75 million, Madonna 350 million. Don't really think 2 million single sales really matter?
I proudly own both Kylie and Madonna's music and enjoy both that's what music is about not who sold what and trying to pit them against each other.
Your biggest flaw also with any PWL sales are Pete Waterman was notorious for sending scouts out to mass buy his own records.

I think her single sales have never broke a million because her album sales were historically so huge.

Also, her videos used to be all over MTV etc - that will have had the effect of promoting the singles and people then bought the albums instead.

From her albums, Like a Virgin, True Blue, Like a Prayer, The Immaculate Collection, Something to Remember, Ray of Light, Music and Confessions on a Dancefloor have all sold in excess of a million copies each. And that's not counting the ones that didn't sell a million but went multi platinum anyway. Album sales that most artists would kill for. Shame that ship seems to have now sailed.

Also if you look at Madonna's discography, they released so many singles in a short amount of time - here's the list just for 1985.

02/03/1985 Madonna Material Girl 3 24-5-{3}-3-7-11-16-31-44-66->10
08/06/1985 Madonna Crazy For You 2 25-9-3-{2}-3-3-5-6-12-15-19-24-31-42-59->15
27/07/1985 Madonna Into The Groove 1 4-{1}-1-1-1-2-4-7-12-20-29-37-49-71->14
03/08/1985 Madonna Holiday {1985} 2 32-5-{2}-3-6-14-23-33-42-50->10
21/09/1985 Madonna Angel 5 10-{5}-6-8-16-30-36-52-71->9
12/10/1985 Madonna Gambler 4 20-7-{4}-5-8-14-22-38-50-60-72-61R(2)->12
07/12/1985 Madonna Dress You Up 5 12-{5}-8-9-7-6-21-32-47-61-68->11

I suspect the record label wanted to delete the single riding high in the chart to make way for the next single.

As already mentioned album sales were extremely strong in the 80s. True Blue, for example, went 7x platinum in the UK and still managed to score three UK #1 singles from the album too. I guess by the time La Isla Bonita went to #1, most people were opting the buy the album instead, and also singles sales weren't incredible in 1986 & 1987 - neither year produced a million selling single at all.

She may have not have had a million seller, but she has had at least 10 500,000+ sellers which is something not many other artists can boast.

Why would I want to do that?!
Because it's the only way she's ever going to get one.
