Continuation of: Official Snooker Thread (Part 6)

I think his point was that when he started and he was paired with those guys he thought he had to do all that stuff. Chat about the crowd. Get a catchphrase. Prempt shots.

He then realised that the pictures talk for themselves and there's no point in trying to call every shot because you're going to be wrong a lot of the time and could look a bit silly.
Thorne seems to gloat when he calls shots, either by calling the correct one or even worse, when a player might play a bad shot and 'it's not what I would have played'.
Hendry is my favourite commentator because he doesn't chatter away for no reason.

I watched the final frame of the 1985 final on the iPlayer and was astounded at how little the commentators said. It was great!

Clive Everton is still going strong and would be moreso if channels gave him the chance. I guess Eurosport have enough already so it would mean pushing someone else out to employ him but I really am puzzled why the beeb took Thorne's side over Everton.

I suppose they have their reasons on how they think their coverage should be but to myself and others who have commented on this it boggles the mind how Thorne seems to be the main man in BBC snooker.

Thorne is not the main man, he is behind Dennis Taylor and JV in the pecking order.

The reason why he is preferred to Clive is simple. To the casual viewer he is considerably more recognised and more well known.

I'd say that the desire to fill the silence overshadows the desire to inform.

It happens even more so on radio.

Does a commentator need to be well known? They don't even have to be seen. It seems to be the BBC themselves who push the commentators/pundits to centre stage.

Clive Everton is easily the best snooker commentator of all time and was dispensed with far too early by the BBC, but there is no way he is still going strong.
His voice has noticeably weakened over the last year or so - hardly surprising as he is not far off 80.

Snooker is hardly the most excitable sport though, unless you're Virgo.

I still enjoy Clive's commentary on the ITV events.

unfortunately not, Asian Tour events are not usually on TV. having said that they do usually put a stream up for all tables on my147.com. don't think it works very well though.

World Cup I would expect will be the next on EuroSport.

I have never realised until now, that the Bradford fire and the black ball final with Davis and Taylor must have been on successive days, or 24 hours.

Both have had their 30 year anniversaries in the last two days, I recall both so clearly and talking about the snooker at school the next day but being so saddened by the other, that can't equate how they happened in the same weekend and both in the same county.

The Bradford fire happened 2 weeks after the Snooker final.

Sat/Sun 27/28 April 1985 (Snooker Final)
Saturday 11 May 1985 (Bradford Fire)

For those of you who do not have BT Sport, The Clare Balding Show is at 10pm on BBC2, with Stuart Bingham featured on it.

Nice preview clip on the BBC website where he explains he's bought the table and the set of balls from the final

There were contrasting fortunes for the two ladies at Q-school today, Heather Clare lost 4-0 to Saqib Nasir this morning while Reanne Evans has just beaten Erik Wilson 4-0, next up for her is either Greg Casey or David SIngh (currently 2-0 to Casey)

Is that all it is ? Best of 7 frames ? Seems a bit 'hit and miss'. You would have thought for something this important it would be longer

yeah q school has always been best of 7, i agree considering whats at stake you would think best of 9 would be more justified

I would say best of 7's is about right for the earlier rounds. Quite a few matches drag on as it is in the first/second rounds.

Best of 9's or even 11's would be more appropriate for the last round or two for me.

I just think they should be the same length as ranking tournaments given whats at stake

Reanne Evans was beaten 4-1 by Ashley Hugill this morning, nevermind i reckon if she keeps trying to she might make it one day.

I noticed Andy Hicks is still in, i am sure i remember him?

Reanne got another chance later this week of course with Q School 2. A good run there and she could get into a few tournaments next season via the order of merit.
