Delighted for him. He's won 40k for that... More than double the prize for winning the whole tournament! (unless someone else makes one ofc)

And of course who did Jimmy beat in the final the last time he won a ranking event ? Paul Hunter. It's destiny

Very disappointing, was looking forward to seeing some live snooker this weekend.
Eurosport have a lot of motorsport and cycling live though so it's debateable how much snooker would have been shown anyway. Eurosport UK could do with another channel really. Sky Sports manage it! |

Precisely! That could be one of the reasons it wasn't shown on TV this weekend. Highly doubtful it was anything to do with rights etc... The first big tournament of the season is only 3 weeks away (Shanghai Masters)

And Sky Sports charge for it.
But Eurosport TV are nortorius for cutting away from live Snooker in favour of cycling! Apparently Cyling is more popular then Snooker! But is Cyling a sport? Or is it a pastime? Can't think of anything more boring to watch! |

We pay for Eurosport as well. Sky Sports handle their coverage much better! Then again, they do receive more revenue from customers etc...

Can't think of anything more boring to watch! Eurosport comes with a lot of Sky packages. You don't ring Sky to just get Eurosport but you do for Sky Sports and you pay a hell of a lot for it, hence they can fill all their channels. Eurosport, more often than not, cannot. Looking at the EPG for today. Eurosport 1 from 6 and Eurosport 2 from 5.45pm are showing repeats all night |

Does anyone here ever watch The Snooker Legends streaming? it's on 24/7 not sure about live games though, maybe it's shown later, it's really fun a nice watch away from the serious stuff.

Shanghai Masters underway then and the first 'shock' as Wild Card (shouldn't be there mind) 16 year old Yuan Sijun whitewashes Gouldy 5-0. I say shock but he also brushed him in China earlier this year. Talk about a bogey player!

But I feel the wildcards are necessary for overseas events because of the way the world snooker tour is structured. For example, around a dozen Chinese professionals had to travel to Barnsley to play in the qualifiers for this...a distance of several thousand miles to earn a chance to play in an event in their own back yard! So credit to Liang Wenbo and Mei Xiwen for emerging as qualifiers, and to this lad for beating Gould. Yuan Sijun's career could follow one of two paths now: (1) he could be championed by World Snooker and sponsors, wildcarded into many more events, awarded ranking points and prize money (he gets neither for yesterdays win), and given every opportunity to nurture, develop and maximise the obvious talent he has (2) he'll join the 128 player world tour within 2 or 3 years, win a few matches in qualifying venues like Barnsley and Wigan, but struggle to make inroads against the solid 'match players' hovering around the 50-100 ranking level. Then after one too many agonisingly slow defeats from Anthony Hamilton, Fergal O'Brien or Rory McLeod, will drop off the tour and slide into obscurity. I know which depressingly familiar one my money's on..... |

Unfortunately you're never going to get over the problem of Chinese players having to be UK based as realistically it's always going to be a predominantly UK sport. So as you say sponsorship and the infrastructure in place is a prerequisite for those of Far Eastern, Antipodean etc origin wishing to make a living from the game.
In the case of the lad Yuan and other Chinese youngsters in a similar position, meritoriously it would be fairer if he (they) gained pro status through the Asian Tour Of Merit (even if it meant offering more places) thus qualifying as a pro but still staying in his home country, then having the aforementioned infrastructure in place to make a fist of it through the qualifiers in this country. |

No disrespect, I hope your first statement proves to be wrong TC
![]() The game IS predominately UK based, but it will continue to be so if it persists with this 'come to Barnsley to qualify' nonsense. IMO it's ruining the development of (most of) the overseas players trying to make a go of a professional career. Lets say it was the other way round, and for this seasons UK Championship, the first 2 rounds were to take place in Beijing. Yes it's ridiculous....but how many UK players would take their place in the last 32 under those conditions, compared to having the whole thing in York? Also, can you name any 16-year old UK amateurs who, given a wildcard into the last 32, would beat a top 20 player? 5-0? I can't. Snooker wants to be a globally recognised sport, with Olympic involvement. It's current structure with all of it's unfair restrictions on overseas talent, will IMO hold it back from those ambitions. Allowing wildcards to be shoehorned into the draw of Chinese events, clumsy as it is, gives some morsel of reward to a nation who can now claim to have the highest standard of amateurs anywhere in the world. Yuan Sijun's win strengthens the case for wildcards. |

Some good points Jim
but we'll leave it there for now as tbh today is, love him or loathe him, all about the return of the Rocket 🚀.....I remember a couple of years back when ROS made a rare appearance in a Far East event Liang Wenbo beat him 6-4 (must have been the International Championship).....be interesting to see who emerges victorious today... |

The only other way they can do it is by taking all 128 to the venue, but then there are more problems in that direction in regards to how long you can book a venue for, UK based players spending double the amount of time away than usual.
Plus another thing, whilst there is high interest in China and young players coming through, they still don't get the crowds that they do in England and probably not as much sponsorship and TV Money either. Edit: sorry TC, only just seen your post about leaving this one for now

I'd love to see Liang put himself in position for a top 16 place this week. He'd have to win the tournament for that, mind.
As for Ronnie, not bothered if he wins or not, so long as he turns up focussed, confident and respectful of the event, and not looking like he's itching to be on a flight home tonight. |

Maguire made three centuries in that match so he's clearly playing well. |
