Ways to make snooker more exciting #2,367: How about a Xmas tourney played on a Xmas Tree shaped snooker table? Or play with balls "weighted" towards their points value. eg. the yellow is tiny and light whilst the black is as heavy as a cannonball and so big it only just fits in the jaws of the pocket.

I don't like Barry Hearn. He's done great things improving the number of events and the money in the game so you have to give him credit, but he's got a cold quality which is reflected in his "if you're not good enough go get another job" attitude.

Also, it's all well him saying the prize money in the game is the highest it's ever been - 10 million - but if you have to pay to get to events (and many more events are in China), stay in hotels, you're paying a lot even before you pot one red ball in a game! It's kind like Hearn gives in one hand but takes away with the other. He's a ruthless businessman.

I agree with John Parrott's idea. Allow the lowest ranked players to compete with other lowest ranked players in the earliest rounds just to give them a chance to progress. Perhaps rounds one and two of the big events. If that helps them get more experience then it can benefit the sport.

I agree. What Barry has done for snooker is excellent and hopefully it'll continue but something has to change otherwise there won't be any up and coming because unless they have the quality of Ronnie, hendry or Higgins then they're not gonna get through.

Perhaps they should make snooker tournaments more like the FA Cup where the top teams/players don't compete until the 3rd round? Get rid of the flat 128 draws - there would still be ample opportunity for "giantkilling" acts by lower ranked players if they catch the top seeds on an off day or excel themselves.

I've got tickets for Wednesday 18th January for The Masters (afternoon & evening), am I right in thinking we'll see Murphy v Hawkins and Selby v Williams?

Yes, the latter is in the afternoon Jenny 👍🏻

John Parrott is clueless. Does he really think all 128 player draws are 1 v 128, 2 v 127 and so on?

Ive just taken one quick look at the current qualifying for the German Masters taking place in Barnsley. 128 players started.

In the first round, the 16nd ranked Kyren Wilson played the 52nd ranked Xiao Guodong (so both players are BOTH in the top 64). The 80th ranked Mei Xiwen played the 107th ranked Adam Duffy (so both players are both ranked between 65-128)

And thats just TWO examples I could be bothered to look up, there are plenty of others and also plenty of events where this applies, its only the UK Champs which has the rigid 1 v 128, 2 v 127 seeding pattern.

Two 147's within minutes of each other in the German Masters qualifiers this afternoon - Ali Carter and Ross Muir (the latter's first in a pro tournament). They will now play each other in the next round, assuming Ross converts from 4-1 up.

What a win for the Whirlwind beating Joe Perry 5-3 from 0-3 down including a run of 94 and an incredible counterdish of 62 from 0-50! Unbelievable from the old dog.

And lo and behold...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_S..._Open_(snooker)

First round of the Scottish Open: the one match that stands out like a sore thumb in the Last 128 is Higgins vs McManus. Both inside the Top 32, yes?

But...but but...I thought all the events were seeded so that the top 64 played someone outside the Top 64 in the first round?!?! John Parrott says this happens at every event so surely the draw on that Wiki page is wrong?!

I think the problem with some of the BBC guys are, if it's not in the top 16 it doesn't matter. Look how many times Willie Thorne says "this is the first time I've seen this young man play." Why Willie ? It's your job.

On a separate note, I'm surprised we can hear Andy Goldstein with his head stuck so far up Ronnie O'Sullivans arse. Colin Murray is ten times the presenter he is

He is indeed and I'm not mad keen on Murray either.

133 break by the Whirlwind in his opening frame. Not bad for an oldie!

??????

He won 4-0 and this is his opening match, where are you getting "three wins and nine frames without reply" from? Im confused

EDIT - ah, you are talking about his results last week as well. Cant imagine him whitewashing Ryan Day (his likely opponent) in the next round, mind.

I have been to Ally Pally a few times but never in car I am afraid. It has always been via public transport or taxi from London. I think you'd be brave to drive there

Watching on Quest this afternoon, both today and yesterday they have longer ad breaks than Eurosport.

So sometimes for the start of a new frame, they split the screen into two mini screens showing both ads and snooker at the same time.
