Poor crowd again tonight. Not too bad on the Williams v Dale table but the other match looks like they are entertaining themselves. I don't get it because ticket prices are very reasonable. Mind you at the UK Champs they were giving away tickets to this event at every session.
Even fairly hardcore fans like me wouldn't be upset if there wasn't another event after say the Grand Prix until the Crucible (/qualifiers), yet alone the PTC finals and the China Open... |

It's bound to be better attended at the weekend but I can't help but feel that it's one tournament too many at this time of the year.
Even fairly hardcore fans like me wouldn't be upset if there wasn't another event after say the Grand Prix until the Crucible (/qualifiers), yet alone the PTC finals and the China Open... EventCity is a large complex not far from the Trafford Centre, several miles out of the city. It normally hosts conferences and events. However with it not being in the centre, it's either a case of driving there or taking a bus from Manchester city centre there (they stop running around 11pm so anyone in an evening session wouldn't be able to get back to the city if using public transport) - there's also not that many hotels close by either. Also, having been to events there before, it does strike me as a bit of a soulless place and it feels a bit like just going into a large warehouse, not the most inspiring place to play really. I'd have maybe held it at a city centre venue, so lots of hotels to people to walk back to after evening sessions, and more interest generated because it is in the city. Manchester Central might have been a good choice, or if they wanted a smaller venue maybe even use the Royal Exchange Theatre (in the round even more so than the Crucible is) - seats 750. Just my 2p worth anyway.. Would have possibly been more |

A 4-0 win for Ding over Michael White (and a class 143 break in the opener) sees him provisionally in the top 16, overtaking Liang Wenbo.
Crucially also if he gets through the quarter finals on Friday he'll also overtake Michael White and be provisionally ranked 15. |

It's funny how you become a victim of your success really, because if Ding hadn't have won the China Open two years ago he'd be pretty much safe for the Crucible now. As it is though, with the £85K due to come off, it's still up in the air. That said, I'll be surprised if he doesn't do enough to avoid Ponds Forge. Looking at the situation with the China Open points / pounds deducted, it'll take something like winning no more matches here or in China, and Maguire reaching semis or beyond in China to oust him.

Ding hasn't played his round one match for the China Open yet don't forget. So most of the players around him already have over 4k added to their totals... You'd expect Ding to win his opening match in China too.
Having said that though, Liang Wenbo is another who hasn't played his opening match yet! Going to be exciting next week. |

http://www.prosnookerblog.com/rankin...ed-seedings-2/ So as that stands, Ding is 16th, (nice they've added a thicker line to indicate the cut off) and once Ali Carter's win money is added, he goes to 31st above Ebdon. Nice win for Ali too, it has to be said. If Shaun Murphy wins his second round match, he'll provisionally go to world ranked 3. |

If Ali Carter wins this event (which is very possible) he'd be up to number 14 in those rankings and therefore will be seeded for the top 16 at the Crucible!
What with prize money for event winners being so high (compared to the rest of the prizes), there is still all to play for. Even for players who are a little further down the rankings who are not currently said to be in contention for the race to the Crucible. |

And the China Open could also help decide things too if someone got really far...
£85k for the winner, £35k for the runner up and £21k for the semi finalists. Note that Ding Junhui's last 128 qualifier was held over to China (not played in Barnsley) so be interesting to see what happens with that before the main tournament starts.. but what if he wins the Players Championship final, I wonder? |

And for those of you who missed it, Darren Lethem is on Pointless (a repeat) - so if you missed him first time around...

Intriguing match with Barry Hawkins and Robert Milkins earlier. Not the highest quality maybe but definitely tense. I suspect Milkins will be ruing attempting to hit that red in the final frame - hitting the blue and giving away the free ball to Hawkins to clean up from there was a major error - and could yet see a top 16 slot pass by.
Shaun Murphy is 3-1 up against Dominic Dale, and considering they started at almost 10pm they are getting through the frames quickly too.. |

Another Egg
![]() still can't believe you didn't get three pointless answers in the final round though, very disappointing! Good on ITV4 (yet again) for switching over to the other table despite their main matches finishing. |

Mark Allen didn't play at his best, but was enough to see off Mike Dunn 4-1. If Shaun Murphy beats Ben Woollaston tonight, it'll be an all top 16 last four.
Was a bit gutted for Ding Junhui in the afternoon session against Barry Hawkins, as another win may have helped his top 16 quest. Ricky Walden did a job 4-1 over Ali Carter, and looked like he was returning to some sort of form after a pretty dismal season.. |

Reckon I'd have given Allen more of a game than Dunn there

How many of the current 16, as it stands tonight, are safe for Sheffield then ? Is it around 14 of them ? White and Ding being the two who could be replaced

Slightly less disappointing turnout tonite, but no way full.
Murphy playing utter rubbish, missing pots by a fair margin. |

I've been a bit underwhelmed by the Players' thing. There's not much atmosphere, and the best of 7s is not really my thing. I seem to keep picking the really crappy matches to watch too. But I do love the commentary team! No golf, no celebrity name dropping, no discussion of players' lovely wives... even some silence! I wish the BBC would take note. ANyway, I came in to tell you that I saw The Nap in the Crucible on Wednesday - it's a "comedy thriller" about snooker, and it was fab! Really really funny, very respectful and loving of snooker and the Crucible. It's on for another week or so, if any of you are in the Sheffield area. |

Bit of a horror show both matches tonight in fairness but at least this one had the excitement of a close finish as Murphy gets home on the final blue to remain on course for the ITV Spring double

Next Thursday at 10pm on ITV4. Looks new. Quote:
The Snooker Mavericks
“This is the thing about mavericks - they do things that can’t really happen… Most of these grey hairs are named after Jimmy White, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Alex Higgins.” - Barry Hearn, promoter This new four-part sports documentary series for ITV4 focuses on uniquely gifted sportsmen whose antics made them icons. The four Mavericks programmes focus on snooker, motorsport, boxing and darts, following ITV4’s Football Mavericks series last year. From Alex Higgins to Ronnie O’Sullivan, from James Hunt to Jason Plato, from Prince Naseem to Tyson Fury, and from Eric Bristow to Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, this series features those individuals whose exceptional skill has sometimes been overshadowed by their lifestyles and personalities. It weaves together contributions from some of those sportsmen - including Jimmy White and Ronnie O’Sullivan, Naseem Hamed and Barry McGuigan, Matt Neal and Bobby George with the views of their rivals, promoters and fans alongside archive footage to paint a unique portrait of those who dare to be different. The series also looks at the wider implications of their contributions - from the impact of boxing on politics to the development of darts into arguably the ultimate maverick sport. The first programme, Snooker Mavericks, explores how the sport was in danger of becoming a forgotten pastime until a young man from Northern Ireland - Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins - rocked the status quo and pushed the sport into the mainstream. With a fast and furious style of play on the table and an attitude to match, the self-proclaimed ‘Muhammad Ali of snooker’ made headline news on the front and back pages. The first ‘people’s champion’ of the game, Higgins opened the door to the snooker boom of the ‘80s when players were treated like rock stars, which climaxed as 19 million tuned into the 1985 World Championship final. He was followed by the likes of Jimmy White and Ronnie O’Sullivan, who proceeded to dominate column inches for years for their entertaining styles of play and for their personal lives. But for every hero there has to be a villain, and in Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry the game delivered the perfect antidotes to the maverick players. When the likes of Higgins, White and O’Sullivan came head to head with the two most successful players in the history of the sport, the game became a must-watch for fans. With many of those personalities long since retired, the programme asks if the game needs a new Hurricane - to blow it back to where it once belonged. |
