Watched most of the live stream tonight, and have to say that Ali Carter looked pretty good on his way to taking the lead 8-1 against Dominic Dale - every time Dominic fluffed a break, Ali cleaned up and was pretty ruthless.

As Rob Walker and Neal Foulds said in commentary, Ali and Ding will be the two that the top 16 will want to avoid should they both seal it from 8-1 up.
I watched Ali in the last round and yes he looked good. Always plays well at The Crucible. That list of Ali and Ding, i would add Ebbo to it. Not necessarily because he is playing fantastically well just he is such a tough opponent with his 'methodical' ways. ( I was trying to think of a diplomatic way to say slow )

Crikey post number 25,000 Only 24,978 worthless too

Even his methodical approach isn't as slow as the Mark King - Rory McLeod match I endured in the first round one year. Six frames were played only (should have been nine) and even then the sixth one over-ran to around 2.15pm meaning the afternoon session was late. That was a test of patience let me tell you.

I mean, we all don't mind good strategical nail biting frames (the epic 31st frame between Bingham and Murphy in last year's final for example, or the final frame of the 85 final etc) but to do that approach every frame must be a real patience tester.

Ding would be a pretty dangerous draw for a main seed if he is on form..

Alan McManus is another who seems to have been around for a long time.

He'll be back at the Crucible a quarter of a century after his debut!

Fair play to him / where are all the decent young players (delete as applicable)

Mitchell Mann has just qualified for his first appearance in the world championship seeing off Poomjaeng 10-9. Sam Baird also won on the final frame 10-9 against Liam Highfield. Hamilton and Robbie Williams still playing

The final qualifier of the first session has finally finished. A tense, and very close, 19th frame won by Robbie Williams

So the first 8 names through to join the 16 seeds

Ding Junhui (17)
Robbie Williams (57)
Robert Milkins (21)
Alan McManus (29)
Anthony McGill (30)
Sam Baird (59)
David Gilbert (22)
Mitchell Mann (74)

This means that Mitchell Mann will be the lowest ranked player in Sheffield.

Notable too that four of the players ranked 17-32 made it through and four didn't. Must admit was pleased for Ding to finish it off well.

You could add Milkins, and after last year's run, McGill, to the players that the top 16 would like to avoid, plus Ali Carter if he finishes the job off later.

D'oh! I forgot Dave Gilbert was ranked 22...

Looks like the Mark King - Michael Holt one is the last to finish. Not that surprised - King can be a slow player - not as methodical as others, but still.. I'm hoping for the Hitman to finish that off.

We know the remaining other 7 though which are as per seedings after China:

Liang Wenbo (18)
Kyren Wilson (19)
Ryan Day (20)
Graeme Dott (24)
Ali Carter (31)
Peter Ebdon (32)
Zhang Anda (71)

And then either Michael Holt (28) or Mark King (37).

That also means 11 players ranked 17-32 have made it, or 12 if Hitman wins as well. So we could have 28 of the top 32 playing at the Crucible, pretty impressive considering the qualifying changes.

^ Which goes to show, if you want the top players at the business end of an event, have a longer format.

The draw is tomorrow at 10am according to the World Snooker website. They are streaming it as well on their Youtube channel.

Tonights 8 qualifiers

Peter Ebdon (32)
Graeme Dott (24)
Ryan Day (20)
Kyren Wilson (19)
Zhang Anda (71)
Ali Carter (31)
Liang Wenbo (18)
Michael Holt (28)

That means that 12 of the 16 players ranked 17-32 have qualified. The 4 who missed out - Matt Selt, Ben Woollaston, Mark Davis and Luca Brecel

28 out of the top 32 at the Crucible - a lot to be said for the longer format as TC mentioned earlier Draw should be exciting tomorrow. Could be some potential 10-9ers in there already!

Seems like that is a very strong list of qualifiers - a few would test the lower seeded players at least potentially.

You just get the feeling that Mitchell Mann will get Ronnie and Ding will get somebody like Smurph or Robbo

So which players are in danger of losing their top 16 place if they lose in first round?

As things currently stand, Liang and Ding are back in the top 16 after the worlds, replacing White and Maguire. Neither of them are safe though, and the only other players that realistically might be in danger of dropping out are Fu and Hawkins.

The provisional end of season rankings list is here, and pretty useful too:

http://www.prosnookerblog.com/rankin...ason-rankings/

This already has the 2014 World Championship money removed.

If Maguire or White get knocked out first round, as a top 16 seed they get the prize money but this money does not count towards their ranking money, in a change that Barry Hearn implemented a couple of years back. So in essence they'd both fall out of the top 16 end of season.
