And a frame or two earlier people were saying a kick kept him in it.

One foul or one kick does not decide a best of 25 frame match. 25 frames does.

The greatest victory of Barry's career without a doubt.

That was tense.

This tournament is now wide open with Robertson, Trump and O'Sullivan out of the picture.

Higgins is playing well, Selby not so well.

All very interesting and this is why I love this tournament because there is actually time for the drama to play out - I think it is a real shame so many titles need to few frames to win them.

Very short matches are not a true test of a champion.

When will Ronnie announce his latest 'retirement'?

Place your bets folks!

Has Ronnie ever won when Willie Thorne has been commentating

Fair enough...I really don't like Hawkins (egg-related reasons), BUT I have to grudgingly say he played amazingly well and was in control for most of the match. Suppose I have to say he deserved to win imo.

I'd say on paper only 2 of the 8 quarter finalists would have been predicted to be there

That was a tense last frame, but fair play to Barry Hawkins for taking the chances when he did and putting Ronnie O'Sullivan under pressure. Granted, going in off wasn't helpful, but it was probably a pressure shot with the way that the balls were lying.

A cracking match and well played both players. Barry winning certainly has got a psychological monkey off the back (ironic of course as Ronnie's walk on music is "Monkey Magic" by Godiego, the theme tune to the classic BBC2 series "Monkey" back in the day) and I could see him going far in this.

The tournament is wide open and there's still three former winners in there (Williams, Higgins and Selby) plus those who are hungry such as Wilson and Ding, and you can't rule out the experience of McManus and Fu or the huge weight lifted from Hawkins either (and he's got the experience of being in a final too) so really all to play for.

Kind of wish I'd put a quid on Kyren Wilson at the start of the tournament now...

The top 8 seeds are the predicted quarter finalists on paper. And 2 are there ( Higgins and Selby ). Last year it was seed 10, will it be one of the 6 ranked lower this year ? I genuinely cannot pick a winner at this moment.

What do other FM's think of the length of the matches in most tournaments now?

It's why I stopped watching for several years.

What a shame so many people now seem to have the attention span of a mayfly on speed.

You cannot beat the sheer drama of a long competitive match - sadly the Crucible is the only place for them in the 21st century.

George Riley on Twitter - Ronnie confirms to me he will be back next year. Says media put unfair pressure on him.

How does he work that out then ?

I went to the Crucible some years ago before the earpiece era, and I really mised the commentary whilst sitting in the audience, maybe not Ted Lowe with the 'Ooooos' and Ahhhhhh's and 'what a great shot that was' though!!

I have not missed Dennis at all, however I do very much wish him a speedy recovery. ”

Dennis is already out of hospital and back at the Crucible. He was on this afternoon.

Talking about old commentators. I was watching the '86 final the other day with John Virgo co-commentating. He was like a different person. So quiet and subdued. The wonderful Jack Karnehm was brilliant.

So happy for Hawkins.

Odd that - I could have sworn that Barry was the one who put the pressure on - and he cracked.

Look at Barry Hawkins' record in best of 25 matches at the Crucible:

Beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 13-12

2015:

Beat Neil Robertson 13-12
Beat Mark Allen 13-11

2014:

Beat Dominic Dale 13-12
Beat Ricky Walden 13-11

2013:

Beat Ding Junhui 13-7
Beat Mark Selby 13-10

What chances do people here give O'Sullivan of surpassing Hendry's 7 world titles now?

He turns 41 at the end of the year.

Can't see it - reckon he'll end up on 6.

Just think if John Higgins wins this he will be World Number 1, some 18 years since he first reached that position. That is some going.

Back in the day Virgo was just the summariser to Karnehm, Ted Lowe and Clive Everton.

Agreed, though I must say for me its not the most attractive last eight Iv seen playing them out.

Can't be many tournaments where 7 of the 8 remaining players are 12/1 or less to win the title.

I know Higgins has had a pretty good season, more so after his performances in the previous couple of years but I never thought I'd see the day again when he was favourite to win another World Championship. I would love to see him get his 5th and move ahead of Ronnie in World titles and Ranking titles.

Yep, he was. But at times I struggled to even hear him he was that softly spoken. He's come a long way since then.

Neither have I. It does rhyme though, and it does give whatsisface something decent to announce at the intro stage

Id rather not Higgins or Selby win tbh

Williams v Ding and Higgins v McManus will be interesting to watch, the latter if you're into masochism, but aside from them, that's the least exciting last 8 in a World Championship I can remember for a very long time.

Smart money has to be on Higgins now, but it's far from over.
