Golden Buzzer conundrum
longpiggy
10-05-2015
Something that was brought up in the live thread tonight. Cannot see another thread exactly on this.

Why are the judges putting through acts by the Golden Buzzer that are clearly going to make the semis anyway? What is the point of that. Looks like Walliams, what ever you think, is the only one that uses it for the right reason (someone/act that would not get through otherwise but for whatever reason they personally love - for good or ill).

As I said in the live thread from AGT here is the prime example of when and why a Golden Buzzer should be used. Other examples?

We have had 4 this year already - ALL been a waste of time IMO.

All four were fast tracked and decided before the show started.

Simon actually mentioned tonight, he invited Lauren Platt's brother onto the show.

I understand where you are coming from but generally if the act is talented enough then they get enough "Yes's" to get through anyway. I see the golden buzzer more of as a way of showing appreciation for an act they feel is exceptionally talented. If all the judges used their buzzer like David Walliams does then there would be too many "joke acts" or acts to a very acquired taste in the semis.

That is why I quoted and linked to the AGT clip - they are a matter of opinion - and in that case 2 hated 2 loved. So should have been gone, never to be heard of again. Whether they could have the same impact is immaterial. They did deserve the Golden Buzzer - because of the split. There is no split on BGT they would have not only got 4 yeses but be put through at the semis. That is the waste. If the act is that much of a joke they will be gone in the public vote - but at least they have another chance.

All we have is yet another singer/dancer - that much different from the normal procedure? No.

Being put through to the semi finals automatically is no big deal. Almost all the acts we see put through are in there anyway.

I know. but they should have the pretence that it means something different, surely?

To be fair, he was talking about his throw away comment he made on The X Factor last year about him auditioning, and do the usual Simon thing of claiming credit where there is none for him to claim.
