Is Big Brother just a very low-key Celebrity Big Brother now?

For the last few series', a lot of the housemates that are chosen aren't really just "ordinary" people, they've either dated a celebrity, appeared on a show or had some sort of ounce of "celebritism". Some of them aren't even far off some of the "celebrities" we've seen on the actual celebrity show.

I fear that if I applied for the show, the bosses would turn their noses up to me immediately, just because I haven't "succeeded" in life or done something important! Maybe it's just me, but I'd find it much more interesting if I was watching people more like myself. You wouldn't see a working class housemate in there nowadays!

(I just looked through some other threads and saw some people saying the same thing, so sorry for being a little repetitive)

they will now also be getting agents to tell them how to act in there

i think so. i dont think BB can be bothered any more finding people for the show by the 'old' ways of the past. Im hoping one day someone with power will do an old style BB again.. maybe even channel 4 will get it back one day. Lets have it like it was. With people from the 'streets' as such.

Yeah the last few years they've all had some vague celebrity connection. Basically a lot of them are reality tv stars and this is just another job for them.

The problem (and what many people seem to fail to understand) is that Channel 5 is a business. Us big fans on this forum want things reverted back to the old days, however the ratings say otherwise. It's one of Channel 5's highest rated shows still. The show has been on the air for 15 years and it's still getting decent ratings...obviously not in the 5 or 6 million region that it was getting during BB5, but since then there are hundreds more different ways to watch tv and thousands more tv channels...people are watching tv in different ways now. Also, the show has evolved with today's culture. There is no way the show would have lasted in its original format for 15 years. I don't like it in its current state by the way, but I can see why Channel 5 have done it...they're a business and it's getting them ratings. All these things such as the TOWIE style name labels etc and all the twists etc...it's doing it's job and getting the channel what they want. The show ahs evolved and moved with the times. I hate what it has become, but I can absolutely understand why they have done it.

Give a good reason why these "ordinary" people, want to be on Big Brother, it's not a new exciting pioneering programme.
In this economy, will they be able to get work afterwards?, can they support themselves losing income?
Big Brother is long and arduous, only people who want to get their mugs on TV and will stick it out for however may weeks need apply.
It's like the argument - why are there so few older people on BB?, because most "ordinary" older people have better things to do.

If that's true, then why the hell do they go through the motions of pretending that they do. I'm sure a lot of hopefuls are taking time to get their application videos right before uploading them and all the time, BB are trawling acting and modelling agencies for the majority of housemates.

The last few series, I'd struggle to count them as semi celebrities, I class them as nobodies.

For the continued success of Big Brother I think they need to work out how to get people with staying power in the media, some of the success of early series was the continued career of some of them in the media, a thing which has been lost nowadays.

If you're on Towie you seem to be more of relevance to other TV shows than you were on Big Brother.

It's BB shore now. Hints of reality but mainly following a rough story board. The main 'stories' will already be planned, sliced and diced into easily digestible tweet sized chunks. In fact most of the reality will be happening in the background and the viewers won't get to see it.

The same reason why the X Factor makes out like these huge crowds are all queuing to see the judges when in reality only a few do: Because it looks good for the promo shots. Speaking of X factor half the contestants from the later series have been scouted or connected to one of Simon Cowell's shows in some shape or form

I reckon you're bang on with all you say. I saw their photos a few minutes ago, and to me they aren't human like rest of us. So thumbs down to them. Think C5 should pay us to watch them.

What makes me sad (and frustrated) is that this can never be a 'low key Celeb' version because (as usual) they don't have a proper age range of contestants. So they throw in two older people as tokens this time, but they're both - seemingly - rather weird. The joy of Sleb BB is the wide range of ages/characters/experience. Once again we seem to be restricted to a narrow range of young people. My interest in BB is (after many, many years) beginning to wane. But as someone said earlier, it's a business, and young is 'today'. Sadly the show will probably lack wit and breadth of character.

Its interesting that older people do well on cbb but not regular bb.

In celeb bb the older celeb is somewhat protected by a good edit, usually because they cost a lot and the increased audience is an older audience who wants to see the has been celeb do well. They want to hold on to this increased audience for cbb as well.

However in regular bb it has less of an older causal viewer so the older housemate is not crucial to the show and can easily be disposed of usually in the first two weeks. It's a younger audience in regular bb, so they need young fit bodies for showmances and to be in bikinis by the pool

I agree.

The show has to move on. The people who watched Channel 4's Big Brother are currently in the minority of people who watch Channel 5's. Why do something differently to make a minority of viewers happy?

It's the painful truth.

I suspect you are right. Maybe they could start a new, minority show called Great Grandmothers Brother... Bet it would be more entertaining.

On the face of it , it seems true anyway.

Actually, the ratings don't say otherwise. The ratings don't say anything at all about whether an old-style BB would do better or worse on C4 than the TOWIE-ified version.

The only way the ratings would tell us is if both versions were shown, so that we could compare.

How do you know that?

Besides, doing something different might attract more viewers than the show has now. It's not only (or even especially) people who watched on C4 who might be attracted.
