Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if the BT Extra IPTV channels (e.g. Discovery, History etc) would work on a non-BT Youview box?

Basically, I'm hoping to get one of Sony's new 2015 4k TVs, and from this summer, they will have Youview built in. I'm hoping to be able to use this with the full BT Youview features without using a BT Youview box?

Thanks

JT

Theoretically yes they should, but I would wait on confirmation from Sony, BT and/or YouView on this before making a purchase.

BT Extra Channels work on my original Retail Box. I can move them between this box and my BT G4 box (although can't watch on both simultaneously as I haven't paid for extra box).

BT have however up until now insisted on supplying one of their own boxes in order to watch Extra Channels whether or not you needed one. They would have to change their policy to sell the BT TV service to retail equipment without flogging you one of their boxes as well.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I don't need to wait as this was only a "nice to have" (i.e. not have to plug in a set top box).

I also don't mind getting a BT box as well just as a spare. Or hey, an extra Freeview PVR!

Am I correct in saying that the Youview system is designed this way (i.e. I'm not breaking any rules by having my own Youview 'box')?

Thanks

You can use any YouView box you like, there are no restrictions put in place.

You've rather missed the point

Youview was supposed to be a universal IPTV interface for all TV's and set-top boxes, however it's specification was delayed so many years that all manufacturers lost interest and went on to other things.

Eventually, when the spec' was finally decided on, it was 're-invented' as a subscription system.

There's been talk about another 'universal format', but nothing has happened so far.

While having youview on new televisions is a good idea, would there be a potential problem with recording programmes or will the television come with 500gb+ of storage too.

If they did that would be great.

You are thinking of Youview+. In TVs, they would probably be vanilla Youview, with catch-up and maybe pause/rewind but PVR/TV? Unlikely, I think.
