Thanks for your updates Zebb - I've been holding off in part after Gigabit's comment above, (not sure what that was based on though), but also because it's sometimes sensible to wait and see if it's working for people or not.

I'll probably update mine sometime this week.

Not had an update notification yet, am waiting patiently.

Motorola seem to release updates late in the day, last Friday it was 5.30pm.

Not sure if 'Clear Cache Partition' would give me back the 380MB from the 5.1 update?

Funnily enough since I started this thread in May, my XT1039 also failed in the same way and was sent to Motorola for repair. It came back today, working OK but has a different IMEI number and a different System Version and different Kernel (same Baseband) - but still on 4.4.4

Does anyone know if a different IMEI means it's a totally new handset or just a new motherboard or something else?

FYI if it's of interest to anyone the old System Version was
21.11.56.peregrine_reteu.reteuall.en.EU.reteu
New SV
21.31.1.peregrine_retgb.retgball.en.GB.retgb

Ha I've just seen this: Update 6/16/2015: Select users on Retail EU (21.11.56.peregrine_reteu.reteuall.en.EU) can download and install Android 5.1

So if I'd been on my old System Version before the repair I could now have 5.1. Seems odd the repair centre would change me to a SV that actually delayed Lollipop

Interesting. I have a 21.11.56.peregrine_retgb.retgball.en.GB retgb on my device purchased from Amazon UK. I have a Three PAYG SIM in the phone.

No sign of an update for me

Should be mine due a update then? ...
21.31.1.peregrine_retgb.retgball.en.GBretgb
apart form the Gbretgb on the end of mine, it matches the highlighted one in you're post.
My phones sim free on O2, goes and hits update on phone nothing yet.
As its a retail edition, do I still need to wait for O2 to check it and deploy it, or does it go via Motorola servers direct?

Nothing yet on mine either, guess I'll keep waiting. (SIM free on Three PAYG).

Update - just tried the USB cable and Motorola Device Manager on my PC and that says no update either.

Not sure if this helps, quote;
" I'm sorry, but is there any difference between 21.11.56.peregrine_reteu.reteuall.en.EU and 21.11.56.peregrine_reteu.reteuall.en.EU reteu?

If the value after the space is not indicated, there either aren't variants/variations with the same software or that value is irrelevant and you might get it if you are in the "Select" list or you will get it if it is available to all users on that specific version.

Good question!

Why there are so many different versions I don't know, but obviously the update has to match the version exactly.

Friday seems to a popular day to release more updates.
-
The only real difference on mine is that LTE Discovery is reporting signal level lower than the phone and Network Signal Info. May not be 5.1 compatible, I emailed them, no reply.

Yep, already downloaded and installing.
Old version...

O2 sim free

Seems Friday tea time is a favourite time for updates after all

As the OP, thought I'd mention that I just got 5.1 in the last hour and completed the update a couple of minutes ago (takes about half hour)

21.31.1.peregrine_retgb.retgball.en.GB.retgb
updated to
23.21.17.peregrine_retgb.retgball.en.GB retgb

Also to answer my own other question; the reason my phone came back from Motorola repair with a different IMEI is because it's a different phone. Apparently their normal procedure, if it's not a simple repair, is to send out a reconditioned handset as a replacement

What's happened to Auto brightness now?

I think it’s still there but they call it Adaptive brightness now and it’s in the Display settings.

How is Lollipop on this device as I have a Moto G, 4G, G1 and have the “Yes I’m in “message in systems updates today but having updated my Nexus 2012 tablet to Lollipop a few months ago and bringing an old but worthy machine to something that I would not pay £50 for from a cheap Chinese seller I’m hesitant to update the Moto.

My OH has a G1 none 4G with the update and is fine so how are you guys getting on with the 4G version and Lollipop.

The on/off switch for Adaptive brightness is in settings and there's also a brightness slider control in the quick settings by pulling down from the top of the screen. You need to drag twice to see quick settings, the first time just shows notifications. It has a Torch toggle button as well now.

Overall I can't say there's much difference for me between Kitkat and Lollipop.

Figured out how to make it look more like Lollipop, just install the Google now launcher.

Got my 5.1 update notification yesterday. Have decided to hold fire for a few days more, I have over 70 apps installed and will need to clear some off to release space for the update to happen.

Biggest issue with lollipop so far is that the stock launcher does not remember icons on the custom screens for apps installed to SD card. I tried uninstalling as well, but that failed as well.
Installed NOVA launcher and no problems!

Made the jump to 5.1. Seems to work reasonably well. I run All-In-One Toolbox which occasionally warns that the phone is running out of RAM, this happens more than under KitKat. I also run avast antivirus so maybe the pair of apps are fighting for resource within the 1GB RAM. There are people who will try to tell me that you don't need Antivirus on Android devices, the truth is that malware can infect virtually any device.

Had already used 5.1 on a Nexus 4 since April so was familiar with the new look, the Motorola implementation seems to be pretty faithful and stable.

I am finding lollipop to be a PITA. You now have to swipe screen first and then swipe a pattern or whatever.

when using chrome browser you could switch to alternative site from chrome app. Now each session is seen as a separate item under the previous apps button (little square) which means they all get mixed up with other apps.

When a call came before, it just took over phone - now you have to kind of select it too answer. I can't see how to set it to old way which I prefer.

TBH - I prefer the old kit-kat keyboards white keys on black rather than black on white.

Also, as I mentioned before, icons for apps on sd card do not get remembered on custom screens from stock launcher.

Wish I had not bothered.
