Keep getting the update message for 23.21.17 for my Moto G (1st generation) that includes Lollipop 5.1.
This is my wife's phone and she has very few apps loaded over stock & uses it mainly for social media stuff apart from calls (a light user)
She seems quite happy with what is on there now (kitkat) so do not want to upset her experience if the issues I read about have not yet been ironed out.

Thoughts appreciated.

KitKat is pretty solid / reliable, so if your wife likes how it works now then there is no need to update.
There is a security flaw currently being exploited using Multimedia messaging, named "stagefright", this is unlikely to be patched in KitKat.
My personal favourite new feature in Lollipop is the lock screen notifications.

If you do decide to upgrade, you may find it beneficial to do a factory reset afterwards in order to get the phone stable, your apps should re-install automatically but any local (offline) messages, contacts and photos may be lost.

Yes, but it is broken, see the reference to the Stagefright vulnerability above.

5.1 won't fix it, in the mean time ;
" Messaging: go to Settings. Uncheck “Auto-retrieve MMS.”
Hangouts (if enabled for SMS; if greyed-out, no need to take action): go to Settings > SMS. Uncheck auto retrieve MMS.
Verizon Message+: go to Settings > Advanced settings. Uncheck Auto-retrieve. Uncheck “Enable weblink preview.”
Whatsapp Messenger: go to Settings > Chat settings > Media auto-download. Disable all video auto downloads under “When using mobile data,” “When connected on Wi-Fi” and “When roaming.”
Handcent Next SMS: go to settings>Receive message settings. Disable auto retrieve.

Thanks for the input & on balance I think I will leave the update for the present.
