Admittedly sci-fi futuristic stuff isn't usually my thing, but with the load of C4 advertising on the programme, I thought I try it. Not bad despite the quickness of events. The entire family got on my wick with exception to the son and I am more of the side of Anita by the end, even when she walked off with the younger daughter. I can see why some think Anita may be doing so to protect her, especially from the mum (when she moaned about the book reading and being burned in the kitchen) and the sister (just pure misery and obnoxious and from nowhere aiming a (bb?) gun).

Not a bad debut, it hasn't made me desperate for the next episode but I like that it's something different from the usual dramas and for a Sunday night it is seeming the most interesting for that time slot.


Totally missed that.

My immediate response to this was wow that's amazing but then I figured it might be attracting quite a wide audience as lots of people on here seem to watch other sci-fi. I've never watched any sci-fi - I don't even like the genre - but I watched this show and stuck with the whole episode and thought it was good. I will probably give it a go next week but if it gets any creepier I will have to stop.

Someone mentioned back stories. Does anyone have a link to where they are?

I suspect it may lose some viewers next Sunday, some won't like the slow pace.

Sorry to disappoint you but you aren't you are actually watching a remake of a Swedish series from 2012 called Äkta människor (Real Humans).

I have no idea. I'm not Swedish. But I wouldn't find it remotely disappointing either way.

Did anyone else think that the rogue cyborgs were being portrayed as being a bit too human? Especially the one in the brothel where she was talking to Colin Morgan in a way that was exactly like a human complete with the speech patterns and illogical behaviour. The human personality is an extremely complex thing and there's no way that any programme or AI could replicate it in that way.

Not much happened and the dialogue was slow, why I think it's slow paced or a slow burner. I'm sure it'll will pick up soon.

I've also read posts elsewhere from people that were surprised it had 'scenes of an adult nature' announced?!
Er, hello.. the drama was on after the watershed. That's enough indication that it will not be suitable for children.

Maybe there should be 2 threads for this show - one for people to comment on the show, and the other for the handful of people who have seen the Swedish original where they can go on and on about how it was so superior to the C4 offering, and bask in their mutual admiration of their membership of the discerning viewing elite?

Anyhow, I'm surprised that some folks think it's a bit slow - it seems rushed to me.
We had hubby down at the Synth shop in the first 5 minutes, youngest child bonding with the Synth more than her bio. mother, elder daughter being a royal pita and trying to shoot it, rogue Synths on the run, William Hurt and his malfunctioning Synth, wife with some sort of hidden secret, and Synth abducting small child - all in 45 mins. or so of actual programme time.

Question - is Merlin meant to be a Synth? If he is, he's not making much effort to appear to be one, unlike Gemma Chan, who is quite plausible.

This is a forum for people who have a strong interest in and knowledge of TV.

As the Swedish version was on first it is natural for people who have seen it to compare the two and, if they are big fans, get annoyed if the English version does not include some of the elements they liked about the original.

Two threads would be a good idea as its getting very tedious hearing about it being a remake of a Swedish programme and how good the 'original' was. PLEASE, give it a rest people!

I agree that the first episode was not slow, at least to my way of thinking. It packed in a lot of stories as you rightly say and it will be interesting to see how they all pan out over the course of 8 episodes.

As to Colin Morgan (Merlin) being a Synth........I don't think so, though I might be proven wrong in the coming weeks.

Yes that was clumsily done.

It also had the effect of ruining the creepy,sinister, ambiguous vibe built up around Anita - we know she's a "rogue cyborg" so we know that her "eerie, soulless robot" act is just, well, an act.

That thought hadn't even occurred to me as there wasn't anything that broke the storyline - now that you mention that I'm not sure I have a problem with it because we have been given the idea that they all have different levels of abilities, even if those probably don't include x-ray vision...


As for 'all an act', maybe the real question is not the fact of it but the degree?
Edit: as evidenced by the 'adult software card for filthy filthy people' as sneaked into a pocket, the programming can presumably also be adjusted to change priorities like communication over domestic knowledge, a repair-bot knowing plumbing not cookery (etc) though I'd rather we didn't get shown too much of the complexities of fully emulating human face to face communication.

nope Merlin is human in this, King Arthur is obviously a Synth however The question is why is he aware of the synths who have become more "alive" than a synth ought to be, I did wonder if he was their creator, there are themes of the synths being out of control, such as the talk of rapid shrinking jobs market, and generation of students loosing interest in even trying to get a job.

the Willam Hurt stuff doesnt seem interesting, other than to say how Synths are being use to care for the elderly, and how people bond with them, im not sure where its going.

Because he obviously fancied her from the outset and the sales guy realised this aswell which is why he caught up with him and gave him the 'extra' material. And the fact that he wants to s**g a robot would be a pretty good reason. I didn't pick up it was him trying to hide it from his son- I thought it was because he wants to have a go. That's why I thought it was a bit cringeworthy.

Can not say i am overly surprised there maybe teenage boys having lustful feelings for synths, or some even wanting to have sex with one. Given there is a culture of synths working in the sex trade, can we really be shocked by his actions?

I wonder why the synths are sexualised anyway? In terms of having sex organs, I mean. If they were merely work drones surely they would not be, except for maybe a few specialised ones for the sex industry. Just as I presume they don't have digestive systems, or urinary systems. Why would they?

Are the males equipped for action? If so, no wonder the bloke from the shop looked a bit askance at his wife and her masseur.

It's a remake and inevitably some will have seen the original ..it's not hard to get hold of.
If it was a remake of say a 70's Brit show numerous people would comment on whether it was as effective as the original and would that prompt people to get so agitated .. possibly not. Yes maybe we should have two threads.......one for people who think it unthinkable that people should have seen the original a remake is based on.............

I dont think a fully working digestive or urinary system would be considered a sales feature.

Given that we know synths can be used for sex its not hard to believe that synths with even a basic set of sexual organs, who can be programmed to fake an orgasm, would be considered a selling point large enough to include them on all models.

i am not sure this dramas wants to explore a society where everybody has a robot lover, and no one can actually have a relationship anymore, because both parties are too used to having a robot with no needs beyond pleasing you. A generation of totally selfish lovers is on the horizon in that world I suspect.

Hopefully we'll get some background to the Synth building/creation process as currently some of the reasoning behind their construction just doesn't make sense. I know we got a throw-away line about "Anita" only costing about as much as a car - but thats a 'hand wave' really - what sort of car? a new Focus? a Bentley? a third hand astra?

Where are the bargain basement models? Surely something like "sex organs" would be an optional extra?

I assume they are meant to be bio-mechanical rather that pure machine?
