Many people have mentioned a similarity in feel and sound to Utopia but I wonder if anyone has also been reminded of the 2013 series The Returned (Les Revenants)?

The music for that production was by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai, but the feel here on Humans is not too dissimilar.

As an aside, I understand series 2 of The Returned is scheduled for broadcast this autumn.

Why do any of you find mention of the Swedish roots so upsetting???????
Because it makes them feel insecure.

Their problem.

Well it was until they starting trying to dictate what can and cannot be said about the programme.

Aww that's a shame. I came here to chat about 'Humans'. Seems I've wandered into a classroom with a bunch of squabbling kids.

This seems to have been a long time coming. Series 1 was a compulsive watch, in a slightly surreal kind of way.

I thoroughly enjoyed this programme, in fact I could have watched another hour Liked the nods to Isaac Asimov.

I am looking forward to Sunday now!

I thought it looked like mains charging, and the ones on the hoof were using battery packs.

I suspect they have wifi and thats how the sentient ones keep tabs with each other

Maybe software user upgrades have to be confirmed by the primary user with some sort of password and credit card deal for extras etc.

obviously I have not seen an owners manual, but I am pretty sure synths on the run would not turn their Wi-Fis on, if they did, they might as well turn themselves in at the factory.

Aww that's a shame. I came here to chat about 'Humans'. Seems I've wandered into a classroom with a bunch of squabbling kids.
I can't believe it's still going on. There is a anther thread to discuss the Swedish TV show.

I'm struggling a bit with the thread anyway as there are lots of references to shows I haven't seen. I guess it was to be expected in a sub-forum. I wish they'd let us have a thread in TV so that people who just want to talk about the show without being expected to know other sci-fi programmes could just chat about what they seen on the screen. I'll have to resort to talking about it to people it in the real world.

I think that's probably inevitable and just the initial reactions - now that everyone's got that out of their system hopefully the class can settle down a bit!

I'll have to resort to talking about it to people it in the real world.
Steady on!!!

I you're struggling with the references in here be glad you never stuck your head in The 100 thread. It started to become mandatory for a reference per post. ;D

We saw Anita 'on charge' at one point; Laura went right up close nose to nose with her .. I fully expected Anita's eyes to snap open and scare the crap out of Laura at that point!

Not long till Sunday now!

Fact is that although a lot of the chattering classes will watch subtitled dramas, many will not especially in the US. I admit to only watching a few subtitled ones myself
I have no idea what "chattering classes" means and I am not web searching it.

I was born in an inner city slum and I watch subtitled foreign shows and movies all the time. I actively seek out foreign shows, especially sci fi because I like to watch stuff made all over the world.

I have watched the likes of Borgen, The Killing and Wallander. I'd probably have watched the Swedish Humans but it's a bit hard to watch something that isn't on.

I'm going to have to rewatch this episode before the next one as I kept turning the sound off when it looked like it might get too creepy (just before bed ) .

I asked this earlier, but I'm too lazy to trawl the thread to see if there is an answer - someone mentioned reading backstories. Are they online anywhere?

It also had the effect of ruining the creepy, sinister, ambiguous vibe built up around Anita - we know she's a "rogue cyborg" so we know that her "eerie, soulless robot" act is just, well, an act.
We don't know that, really. We know she used to be, but got abducted, and we don't know what happened after. She may have been reprogrammed. Given the people abducting her knew she was in the wild and free-range, they surely realised she was rogue, and therefore was unlikely to be fooled by her acting all robotic. Then again, the same could be said of the one in the brothel. It's not making a lot of sense to me at the moment.

Many people have mentioned a similarity in feel and sound to Utopia but I wonder if anyone has also been reminded of the 2013 series The Returned (Les Revenants)?
I didn't find this very similar. It seemed a lot brighter in tone, and less creepy and inexplicable.

Interesting that Laura even though intensely disliking the idea of having one in the house and calling Anita a tin can, pulls up the kids on treating the machine as a slave.
I think that's a big part of why she doesn't like them. She thinks they are diminished by owning one; made more dependant, less capable, and also more likely to treat other humans as machines.

Here's an interview with the Swedish versions creator:
Lars Lundstrom

Interestingly his comment:

Lundstrom says he has no problem with Humans, an eight-episode remake of the Swedish series by Channel 4 and America’s AMC. He says the scripts are “great” and appreciates the fact that the new series is “similar, but differs a lot as well”. “It’s not a carbon copy, which would be boring,” he added.

Which is rather at odds with the pieces title
Ah so now it's OK to refer to the original is it LMAO

I can understand why he would want the original to be shown first...I would myself but I guess after Humans has finished maybe Sky Arts might pick it up.

.

I would have thought you'd have worked out that nothing exists in a vacuum and most if not all cross reference all the time..................... I'm sure you do...........................

Great new series. How creepy is Anita??? eeeek.

I like the old man with the blond android he's using as a memory receptacle. Quite poignant that.
The acting is superb, the whole thing is full of suspense, and it's completely reeled me in.

Just one odd thing - if this is futuristic with all the advancements in AI, how come everyone is still texting on iphones, driving old bangers etc. That stuff doesn't quite gel.

Good spot, I just checked and this did happen.

Either a mistake by the makers or the wife has been subbed for a bot? She is acting very robotic anyway, maybe a big twist from the original and the husband has had her replaced because she was not loving any more.
Which part of the kitchen scene was it?
(I assume it's the kitchen scene that starts with the discussion about the music).
The only bit of that which sounds like "Mia" is "I'm here discussing <something> with a tin can"

though if I'm going down I'm taking everyone else with me! I wasn't alone... And at least one of the references was purely by accident - plus I think the 'crowd' had a lot more of the sci-fi nerd contingent who seemed to be comparing it with *everything*.

We saw Anita 'on charge' at one point; Laura went right up close nose to nose with her .. I fully expected Anita's eyes to snap open and scare the crap out of Laura at that point!
I was expecting that to happen too - I wasn't disappointed when it didn't though because maybe that was too obvious a thing to do - and for me also cemented the idea that it's not that sort of story.

I really loved it, its so creepy yet at the same time could totally see how that would become so mainstream. I knew the minute the dude gave him that extra pack when he bought Anita it was something about sex.

Maybe its just me but I get such weird sexual undertones from almost all the synths and their relationships, initially the old guy and the blonde until they developed the plot further along. The Jill Halfpenny one totally, I mean a personal trainer is a cliche to begin with lol.

I also think its so indicative of the modern world how they aren't meant to last, just like iPhones and the like they have a relatively short lifespan before recycling so you need a new one.

I find Laura's interactions with Anita interesting on the one hand chastising the daughter for treating her like a slave and testing to see if she has anything beyond programming but at the same time a real disdain for her.

I'm excited to see the show develop.

The train station scene really stood out for me, those rickty old trains still in use.

It's not set in the future. It's supposed to be in a parallel universe or alternate reality where the only difference is to this Earth is they've made huge advancements in AI technology. Everything else is the same. I noticed a human and his AI walking past an old 05 regy car...!

Dare I say this is quite a common trope in SciFi? A sort of 'what if...?' - John Wyndham used it in in "Day of the Triffids" - the novel was set in contemporary 1950s Britain, but a Britain that had had Triffids wandering around in it for the previous decade. Doctor Who does this a lot too.
I also think the Synths have come a long way very quickly - much like mobile phone technology did or how Facebook and then Twitter became ubiquitous in just a couple of years.
