Dare I say this is quite a common trope in SciFi? A sort of 'what if...?' - John Wyndham used it in in "Day of the Triffids" - the novel was set in contemporary 1950s Britain, but a Britain that had had Triffids wandering around in it for the previous decade. Doctor Who does this a lot too.
I also think the Synths have come a long way very quickly - much like mobile phone technology did or how Facebook and then Twitter became ubiquitous in just a couple of years.

I expect Dr. Who does it to save on production costs - you don't have to provide futuristic versions of everything - must save a bundle!
A significant saving for C4 too - might have been a factor in them deciding to do it.

Some nice ideas but it's basically just yet another twist-thats-not-even-a-twist on the same story about what happens when robots develop feelings that has been done time and time and time and time and time again.

Looks nice, and I suppose I'm interested in where the robots came from, but basically it's AI/Blade Runner/I, Robot/insert robot movie here.

I thoroughly enjoyed this programme, in fact I could have watched another hour Liked the nods to Isaac Asimov.

I am looking forward to Sunday now!
Well after ripping off the same idea of his that everyone else has already made shows and films about that are pretty much exactly like this one, it'd be rude not to crowbar his name in somewhere!

Aye, it's a cheap way to do it, isn't it? Just throw in a few CGI airships or spaceports in the background and you've instantly got an alternate reality version of 2015.

This sort of thing is usually called Speculative Fiction rather than Science Fiction - Margaret Atwood is a good example of a novelist who writes in that genre, as well as John Wyndham like you said. Tends to be about things that could happen rather than more way out ideas.

I really loved the first episode - it was one of the first series for a while where we wanted to watch the next episode rather than thinking "suppose we'll stick with it and see where it goes".

But you wouldn't have one use of electronic technology advance far ahead of other devices, would you? If there were realistic robots everything else would have moved on too.

Sometimes thats how it goes. TV's developed little for decades, then all of a sudden they were flat, 3d and the size of a wall. We've made fantastic strides in computing and on-line networking but in some ways our aeroplanes are less advanced than the '70s - you can't fly supersonic to the USA anymore.

I would have thought you'd have worked out that nothing exists in a vacuum and most if not all cross reference all the time..................... I'm sure you do...........................
Well I did a comparative studies degree twenty something years ago but I can't say I apply the same principles when watching the telly. I've just watched Mock the Week on iplayer and it didn't occur to me once to compare it to another programme - I tend to just watch what I'm watching.

It's not set in the future. It's supposed to be in a parallel universe or alternate reality where the only difference is to this Earth is they've made huge advancements in AI technology. Everything else is the same. I noticed a human and his AI walking past an old 05 regy car...!
That makes sense given the opening of the show had those 1950s and 60s images of early robots where they were always very optimistic about how things would develop.

No flying cars though .

I dont think so as he is bleeding.

Not sure why mattie said to her Mum why she let the Dad have a synth. In the previous episode there was a bitter fight between the wife and husband.

It's hard to see who is the baddie in this. The mother looks like she is going down that route.

I wonder who will have sex with Anita first, the boy or dad?

I feel sorry for the old guy, it it actually legal to keep him a prison in the UK?

I'm sure the writers of this series were Avengers fans... Certain similarities: the Synths and the Cybernauts

That's why I wondered if Leo was a hybrid but he had inherited more human characteristics than his "brother"

Possibly Leo was an attempt by the doctor to save his son, which led to parallel development of synth technology? Which is perhaps what the doctor wants to hide?

Really intriguing. I just never find Katherine Parkinson convincing which is distracting.

Episode 2 and they havent told us

Who is the guy with the black synth and who is he searching for and why.
Who the hell is Paul Faye
Who is the goody and who is the baddie
Who the hell is everyone
How is the synth whore connected to anyone

A story is only good if they tell us what the hell it it that we are watching. Crikey

This hasn't grabbed me as much as I was hoping. It's probably down to everyone in the main family (bar the young daughter) being bloody annoying - particularly the mother. Will give it another episode, otherwise I think that's it for me.

I find it a bit odd that all the synths look different.

I could imagine the Anita model being a big seller. William Hurt's new synth, not so much.

Exactly my thoughts. It seems to be a very slow bruner for 8 episodes.

So is leo and Max both created by Dr george?

Oh dear the lack of posts on this episode plus this post does not sound good. I was going to watch on +1 but I think I might give it a miss and go to sleep.

I'm not sure who he is but he's searching for Anita as they were in love.
