I'd be worried about a robot uprising. Both Niska and Anita (as Mia) rebelled.

I'd missed that. There does seem to be a hidden agenda with her.

My understanding is that Anita was wiped in an effort to fix her after they switched her on to have some fun. That didn't happen to Niska, so she still has everything, and has been faking it.
I don't think Anita is faking it. I don't think she knows she has free will, and is able to lie. She was captured as a "stray" (apparently that's a thing), and the people wiping her were presumably criminals rather than the company that makes them, and so they did a half-assed job. For now I'm going with the theory they wiped her memory but not her programming or personality. At some point she must have re-entered the market illegally; either the dealer that sold her is crooked, or his supplier is.

I don't think she cares about the family, except for the child. Most of the time she's doing what a synth would do, either knowingly (for camouflage) or unknowingly (because she doesn't realise she has a choice).

I don't know if she's that much worse than humans have been. I'd hate to be old, infirm and dependant on help like that, even at the best of times. There have been news stories about elderly people being abused in care homes by the people supposed to look after them.

It's pretty much a trope of this genre of SF that the machines are us. It's always a metaphor for racism, sexism and other human relations, and rarely a true exploration of AI. That said, it could be justified by saying the synths were modelled on humans, or by saying that any sentient being would care about its physical integrity and freedom.
