Maybe not rummaging but to chuck their own rubbish in it.

I think we're all over thinking the bin thing. Maybe on normal nights she would have tipped it down the sink or toilet or taken it straight to the outside bin but with bloke on the sofa felt the bedroom bin was the most discreet place (after all a normal house guest is not going to use the bin in their work friend's bedroom, you would use the kitchen or bathroom bin).

Well she is his friend, it's the sort of thing friends would do. If she doesn't have emotions then she might just be acting to keep up the charade, if she does then she probably genuinely felt bad for him and wanted to help. Plus she's been fooling him this long so no reason for her to think she can't continue to fool him.

The way he was just rutting her, while looking pervy/guilty at the same time eww.

What was the creepy blue bag thing that whats-her-name pulled out of her gullet?”

Her name's D.I. Caroline Voss and she's clearly being revealed in this episode as a synth of one sort or another.

Oh yes, the blue bag was supposed to be a condom (are they blue these days?) that contained all the wine she'd supposedly just shared with her colleague Pete. Since it's fast becoming clear that she may well be a synth (they can't eat or drink) this was a device to conceal that fact.

Okay now?

In the bin in *her* *bedroom*? Really?

She appears to live alone, which makes sense given that she's a secret synth, but even if she had a flatmate do you really think that flatmate would violate her privacy by going into her bedroom to use a bin?

She does have a flatmate at the moment. Sleeping on the sofa.

Good job she bought the bin that day and had the foresight to put it in her bedroom and not the bathroom then, eh.

I don't know why people find this surprising. A synth will do whatever he wants and won't laugh if he fails to perform. Also, it's easy to understand him falling for a near-perfect "woman" who's been living in his house long enough for him to form a sort of imaginary relationship with her.

The main flaw with this series is the idea of making household synths (both male and female) attractive in the first place. It's guaranteed to destroy marriages!

Er, what's wrong with her hair then? It's in a cute pageboy-ish style, it's beautifully conditioned and the actress/character looks gorgeous ... those lovely brown eyes certainly do it for me!

Are you implying some sort of trans-gender synth-thing going on here?!

I'm sure you meant 'the sister who died' ... only thing is, what sister?

That's just plain weird!!

Pete's feeling emasculated by the attachment his wife has to her synth .. that's all. Even if he knows there's nothing 18+ going on (presumably) I think most men could sympathise with his plight.

I haven't had recording technology since the days of VHS. No need with iplayer and 4od. And DS.

My ewwww was precisely because it is just a blow up doll with a chip in it. Call me fussy but if I came home to find my other half doing one of those I reckon it might well be enough to put me off.

I admit that crossed my mind too but I decided I'd just been watching too much Cucumber. I don't think it is that - I'm pretty sure he's emphasising he's a man as opposed to a piece of plastic/a machine rather than anything homoerotic. 'Pete - the deposit' was a great line - and also brings it back to the fact that it's a machine.

I quite like the contrast between pete and laura and their reactions to the synths.

We have laura who at the start was always emphasising to the family that anita was a synth, just a machine, had no feelings etc. when she was fed up of her she attempted to return her, like you would a faulty electronic good.

Her husband and son seemed to treat anita like a real human, and kind of lost sight that she was a synth.

Pete on the other hand, seems to have a human based grievance with his synth. He seems to think that his wife and the synth will become romantically involved, as if the synth is capable of having sexual feelings towards a human. When he couldn't take it anymore, he attempted to attack him in the same way he would a human.

In contrast to lauras family, petes wife however has shown from the start that she appreciates the synth as just that. She knows he is a synth and is there to help her. She seems less emotionally attached to the synth as her husband! Even when pete was going to attack him, she was the one to bring up the deposit and acknowledge he is just a synth.

but in the end there is no real difference between a blow up doll, and a rampant rabbit, both do a similar thing, im not sure why some find one gross, but not the other, seems to be a double standard.

Yes, but is he really likely to go wandering into her bedroom to look for a bin?

If you were crashing on the sofa at a colleague's place, would you go into their bedroom without permission?

No I meant the brother. People were talking about her having some human spirit in her or something so I thought maybe it was the boy - man now I feel silly.

I also don't see why it's such a leap for some people that a teenage boy could possibly get all emotional or think he's in love with a synth.
Teenage boys aren't exempt from crushes and infatuations.

Some people, as we can see with Copper and Laura find the synths ooky, probably because they're too humanoid.
Hiroshi Ishiguro has been researching people's reactions to robots that look human, puts a lot of people off, deep revulsion.

Dalekbuster does come out with some oddness most of the time.

A Bloke in Woman's flat isn't going go wandering about in her bedroom, unless he's got a very definite reason to be in there, it's a bedroom it's private, it's not a shared space.

No, the synth in question will report any touch to his parents.

I don't find his crush on Anita surprising, I find it surprising that he wouldn't want to actually have a snog with a real attractive girl because of said crush. It's not like Anita would have known about it and it's not like he has a chance of ever doing anything with Anita.

I'm probably overthinking it but would a synth be able to chew and swallow food? You need saliva when eating and clearly a synth wouldn't have that because they'd need constantly topping up with water. So surely all the food would just get stuck to her mouth. I know she had wine to wash it down, but even then, it's not going to be anything like an actual human mouth.

Also, a few people responded to my point about her background being checked if she supposedly transferred from another force. I'm not an expert, but surely if a Detective Inspector transferred, it'd take more than an email from HR. An Inspector will have been in the force for quite some time, enough to make a considerable amount of colleagues and be well known to their superiors. Therefore, it doesn't ring true to me that she could suddenly appear out of nowhere, no questions asked. So I'm wondering if the synth has abducted the real DI Voss and is acting in her place -- suggesting it's possible to clone a human face for a synth.

I would have thought a synth would be able to hack/change systems enough to give themselves a credible background check. If you move around enough it's perfectly viable that you could just appear.

I thought maybe there was going to be a clone story because I thought one of the synths in the opening sequence looked like Jill Halfpenny - but other posters said I was wrong so I decided I was just seeing things.
