I don't get the impression the Coppers Wife is 'having fun' with her synth or that he's 'helping' her, nothing worthy of quotes.
It's a useful machine that's helping her recovery and she doesn't find it objectionable as her husband finds synths. Synth detective has been mentioned more than once, read some of the thread at least. Last page or two would do so you can keep up with the discussion. I don't think Mattie's done a complete U-turn, lots of people find sex with inanimate objects odd, blow up dolls for example. I think her objections were spelled out, Sex with and de-activated synth, clearly had some parallels with drug rape. Oddly enough many of us were also teenage boys at one time and see reasons why he wouldn't have copped off with the Girl at the party. Mattie sees synths as nothing more than machines and demonstrated her anger at them and lack of caring when shooting Odi and trying to shoot Anita. Yet when it came to the party scene she suddenly went all protective and, normal. The reason the boy gave was that there was someone else. Which we, the viewer, know to be Anita. And, a bit less... aggression in your posts in future. |

I've clearly missed something critical here - why is it that Jill H-p is getting so many specific mentions? Not a criticism of those who have but I genuinely don't know, do I lose street-cred for that?
Im sure she has done loads more tv work too but I cant think of what else she has been in - sorry |

How come Anita/Mia has been running for 14 years when Odi is pretty much ready for scrap after just six?

Yes, mentioned but only in so much as people being surprised she turned out to be synth.

Eh what are you talking about? She was robotty from the minute she looked up in the car and loads of the thread has been spent discussing whether she is a synth or just a crap actress. We didn't necessarily know if she was actually going to be revealed to be a synth and no one got the bag down the gullet bit. They got us good and proper with that one. I'm still not sure if they made her 'robotty' to suggest she was a synth without giving the game away or if it was just bad acting. The hair style didn't help. |

I didn't understand this either - but maybe Odi isn't only 6 years old. Maybe it's just that the paperwork George has says he's owned him for 6 years but really he was around much longer?

Oh okay I didn't read anyone saying that she's going to be proved to be a synth by having a bag down her throat but it's entirely possible I haven't read all the posts. I thought it was a nice touch as the obvious things would have been to show her on a charging point or taking out brown contacts to reveal synth eyes but I guess is wasn't such a nice touch if people had worked it out in advance!
Although anyone who saw A.I. would know that most robots can't eat unless they are designed to eat. Personally I think a condom would be a bit risky. If it burst as she pulled it out, she could be harmed just as if she had drank the wine without the condom. |

I meant before. We were talking about what people did or did not work out before the reveal (ie many had thought she might well be a synth).
I had wondered why blonde synth was ordering a drink and what she was gonig to do with it because I realised she couldn't drink but I hadn't even noticed whether police synth was eating and drinking or not. |

Has anyone wondered why they've made the androids so human and able to pose as humans using contact lenses and not like C3-PO or the ones in I, Robot where it would be obvious what they were?

I have been wondering if the more human synths, have minds based on human brianwaves, the rest do not, as for why she is working order, I dont know synths seem pretty sturdy to me, and can be easily repaired, if one lives a quiet life, does not get involved in car chases and the like, they should live a long time. I suspect more are replaed for a newer model, than because they stop working.
Also makes you wonder if like smart phones, is there a strong second hand market for synths? I dont see why not, can they be taken to CeX, or can they be traded in off the price of a new one like a car, and then a dealer gives them a tune up and sell them second hand, whilst the fact Antia was bought "new" from a store, seems to suggest no, im surprise that, this is not the case. There could be a selection of different brands/models all with differing problems, product recalls, etc like cars. Odi could have come with a partworks Magazine for hobbiest Synth builders, build your own synth in 100 editions, full of cheap wiring and rarely completed ![]() Anita/Mia could have been akin to manufacturers in house testbed, rarely used, no expense spared, constantly been fettled and upgraded, expensive gold connectors in her wiring, etc, etc. Anita can't be used an example for the existence or non-existence of a S/hand market, as she's not standard in anyway. |

We don't know anything much about the life expectancy of a synth nor how they're made.

That's the whole point, they've got to blur the lines. See Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratories I think there's footage of James May in the lab with his robot somewhere, it's a bit ooky IMO. I suspect that if a manufacturer could make robots to this level of 'realness' there would be legislation to stop them, to prevent some people getting overly attached to them. |

agreed that Antia should not be used an example, but you have a point, had not thought about people out dating and upgrading their own synths, I guess I figured it something a little too complex for the majority.
lol at a Build your own synth in 100 issues. Various synth competitions, robot wars, synth olympics, etc whole new outlets for hobbiests. On that tip, there was that cack movie about robots boxing, blokey who played Wolverine. |

Well we've got code hackers and online code exchanges, could be whole synth scenes out there.

Although i'm still trying to warm with the series, the latest installment was not a bad episode, it certainly opened up the story more than in previous ones. I more intrigued with Leo and the back story there than with Anita and that family - I think they all annoy me now, even the little 'un. ![]() Quote:
The Niska scenes are getting increasingly far fetched. As if a whole room of humans couldn't take down a synth. We saw there were plenty of weapons there - you'd just crack her over the head from behind while she was swinging her bat at someone.
Otherwise, it was good as usual. ![]() |

![]() I get that she might be stronger than the average man but to take on all of them in that room? Yeah that one was a bit hard to believe. It's the sort of thing that happens, if one person had picked up a weapon and had a good go at her others probably would have followed, human nature. |

So I've had a read through and this thread has helped me piece together a few blanks I've had. But...have we touched on where the synths are coming from?

I have to wonder how many of them had seen the Swedish version before hand.
![]() I saw it after the talk of her being a synth but could see why people might believe she was one even without seeing the original show. She just looked like a synth right from the off - people were commenting on it even during the episode - so it was a fair line of thought that she might be one, though as I said we reserved judgement for the alternative possibility that she was just a crap actress. Also, have you seen all the other guesses at things we've come up with? I've still got my clone idea based on nothing more than the fact that I think a synth at the very start looks like Jill Halfpenny! Just because one of the theories turned out to be true doesn't mean they all will. Having a stab a what's going on is part of the fun of watching stuff like this no? |

How would anyone see the Swedish one? It hasn't been on and there's no DVD. Anyway apparently the two shows aren't even the same so even if someone has seen the Swedish one it wouldn't tell them anything about this one.
There are DVDs and even a two season Blu-ray out, but very expensive. |

In the same way that people having crushes on favourite band members don't just stop having other relationships, but on the other hand maybe it was an on-the-spot panic reaction as opposed to any particularly deliberate chain of thought about not being judged.

We know that smash clubs were legal because we saw Hobb's colleague intercept a call to the police about a synth going rogue in one. If they were illegal would the humans there have called the law when things went p-shaped?

I think Niska is just as deluded as any human who anthropomorphises the synths. She may be sentiient but the others are no more worthy of consideration for their feelings than an outdated PC or mobile phone. .She'll be attacking humans for mistreatment to automobiles, next

I'm curious about David Elster. Have we actually seen him in an earlier episode (and I missed it) or is he a character that's only, so far, been referred to?
