Eh? Most people got the bag down the gullet bit. It was only a few who didn't.

I'm still not sure if they made her 'robotty' to suggest she was a synth without giving the game away or if it was just bad acting. The hair style didn't help.
Blimey, someone else having a go at her hair! It's a cute style and suits her really well ... what the hell is it that people on here are criticising?

I did see mention of it by yourself and one or two others after last weeks episode. But that's the first I saw. Can't be arsed trawling the thread so I will concede this point.
Entirely agree!

We're now up to over a thousand posts and only half way through the production. I think the mods should create separate threads for each episode and in so doing they'd make it much more straightforward to join in the discussions.

I'm curious about David Elster. Have we actually seen him in an earlier episode (and I missed it) or is he a character that's only, so far, been referred to?
I think there may be a picture of him in the Opening Credits but apart from that we haven't seen him.

If he is dead I do think it only happened fairly recently (last year or two) as I doubt that Leo and the Synths (sounds like a 60's pop band) were wandering around for five plus years and presumably David provided somewhere safe for them when he was alive.

Because it looks artificial and synth like and gave the game away.

she is a fairly well known actress and has been around for quite a long time, she was a teenager in a kids tv show called Byker Grove, she then starred as Phil Mitchells wife in Eastenders, she was a celeb on Strictly Come Dancing, I believe she then went onto the West End stage for a while too, after Strictly

Im sure she has done loads more tv work too but I cant think of what else she has been in - sorry
... to say nothing of her stint as Kate Hopkins in Coronation Street from 1999-2000.

I think the fact that she's one of the few recognisable faces amongst a cast of relatively unknown actors (William Hurt, Danny Webb and Katherine Parkinson excepted) means that she gets these mentions. Personally I can only recall Katherine Parkinson as the dappy receptionist in Doc Martin and I think she was in that silly Maltesers bunny ad, but I realise she's very popular on here for loads of other stuff that I've not seen.

Katherine Parkinson is probably best known from 'The I.T. Crowd'.

And last year was in "The Honourable Woman", as well as "In The Club" (which also starred Jill Halfpenny!)

I just realised that Voss is played by Ruth Bradley. She looks different in this series.

How come Anita/Mia has been running for 14 years when Odi is pretty much ready for scrap after just six?
Perhaps Odi was a cheap Chinese "fake".

Well they copy everything else.

As I said earlier I think David is dead, but was brought back by his dad and is now part snyth/human and Leo. This was the step which George did not agree with and left the program. Leo we said is flesh and blood, but also has tech parts installed. The big clue I think when the rogue repair guy said he bled when asked if Leo was a snyth.

You mean Leo?

David is the Father, Leo the son.

I don't think anyone is criticising her or her hair 'style'. It is simply that the character's hair is permanently static which gives it a look of artificialilty.

So I've had a read through and this thread has helped me piece together a few blanks I've had. But...have we touched on where the synths are coming from?

Spoiler
You don't need to spoiler your personal theories, but I imagine it is the other way around. For example, Odi the robot is a vessel for George's wife's memories.

She just looked like a synth right from the off - people were commenting on it even during the episode - so it was a fair line of thought that she might be one, though as I said we reserved judgement for the alternative possibility that she was just a crap actress.
When I read those comments I thought people were applying them to Kate Parkinson Must pay more attention.

Errm because the drama wouldn't work if they looked like assembly line robots.
That's the whole point, they've got to blur the lines.
See Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratories
I think there's footage of James May in the lab with his robot somewhere, it's a bit ooky IMO.

I suspect that if a manufacturer could make robots to this level of 'realness' there would be legislation to stop them, to prevent some people getting overly attached to them.
I can see the point of making them look human with "sex bots" but not with home helps, maids, physical therapists etc

I don't think Mattie's done a complete U-turn, lots of people find sex with inanimate objects odd, blow up dolls for example.
I think her objections were spelled out, Sex with and de-activated synth, clearly had some parallels with drug rape.
If she considered the synths objects she would not have considered it akin to date rape but she might have objected to the idea that it was akin to simulation of date rape. Just being disgusted that they were planning to act out some perverse fantasy with a doll.

Personally I think it was more than that. I think her exposure to Anita is changing her mind about synths. She's started to see them in a new light.

Oddly enough many of us were also teenage boys at one time and see reasons why he wouldn't have copped off with the Girl at the party.
I'm pretty sure that at his age I'd have felt far too shy and intimidated to go along with it and might even stammer out the same excuse just to get out of the situation

In fact, I'd probably be the same at my current age too

When I first suspected the D.I. to be a synth I was wondering if synths had already been installed in key places of some power but in disguise to not unsettle the unknowing humans. I assume this is now out of the question?

A lot of people saw it when it was first shown and I've seen it recently (don't ask how).

There are DVDs and even a two season Blu-ray out, but very expensive.
I don't think people on this thread have seen it. There were loads of posts about people who kept going on about the Swedish version near the beginning of the thread and someone started another thread for discussion of that show.

When I read those comments I thought people were applying them to Kate Parkinson Must pay more attention.
We did that too - but with a as we pretty much know she isn't a synth.

I've never heard of her so googled her and she does look different from her usual photos. It's the wig!

I think she was deliberately made subtly 'robotty'. If she'd been completely indistinguishable from humans it would have been ultra creepy and probably a step too far when you look at where the technology is.

So I think the actress was directed to make some expressions/movements synth-like. Several people had already been questioning her and saying there was something a little odd about her.

Not really, we don't know enough about the situation to say how wide spread it is.

It could be that D I Voss is one of a very small group of Synths (Leo's group) created by David Elser who split from Leo and the others a few years back and integrated herself into human society with no help from anyone or she could have nothing to do with Leo and co and be part of a wide spread infiltration of society by an army of super synths.

Pete her partner obviously does not know she is a Synth but someone higher up in the Police may well do.
