Gaping plot hole for me.
There is no way Society would be that normal with Millions of people unable to find work
Governments would fall. People wouldn't be able to buy even rent houses that is the problem when they keep pushing this issue, its like the fall out cant be covered either because of Budget or so many stories as is.

Agree about the family thing. I feel they played their part and there's no where for them to go from here. Shoe horning storylines in just to give them something to do might be a mistake. Otherwise, really enjoyed the opening episode. Niska is funny. She appears to have mastered the art of sarcasm quite well for an AI.
yes for me that part was the weak bit.
Unless they have something huge planned for them everything else I really did enjoy

In theory would it matter if bots all took over jobs?

We should, by then, be able to live well without needing to work.
This is what the leaders of the industrial revolution thought would happen in a hundred years.
How would we earn money to buy food, clothes, mortgages, loans, schooling etc.?

Or, would the Synths just make us our money to pay for these things

We would experience something like the great depression maybe? But on a much larger scale? Civil unrest would be quelled by Synth armies. Education would be limited to the elites. The population distracted by violent gladitorial reality shows. Lol, just spitballing here!

Universal Basic income (UBI) is already being talked about with some seriousness to lessen the impact of many employment roles being increasingly replaced by automation. Even had a referendum in Switzerland recently about it. Voted down massively of course due to worries about productivity particularly since unemployment levels in much of Western European countries (such as Switzerland, Austria, Germany, UK, Netherlands, etc) and America are still well below 10%.

Once a country trials UBI at a modest level and it becomes moderately successful, I presume it will be implemented more and more throughout the world as workplace automation increases. Basically, a portion of the profits saved from hiring someone on a monthly wage would be paid as a citizen income tax by the company to fund everyone to sit at home and be paid enough to live on.

Of course, this will fluctuate from country to country and cause civil unrest to a certain degree while problems are ironed out but eventually it will become standard as large swathes of particularly repetitive low paid jobs are automated.

Anyone remember doing Data Entry jobs in the late 80's and early 1990's? I do. I used to love doing those types of jobs as a youngster... but you can't get them now since the internet became widespread and everyone started 'doing their own data entry' by filling out forms on line. Am I now out of a job with no hope or prospects because of computers? No. With computers came different jobs, such as the PHP/Web developer job I am currently doing. Things move on, for better or for worse.

Admittedly for most of us, as automation increases, it will be interesting but scary times for us in the future, which is what this drama showed us very skillfully this evening.

How did you edit the commercials out?
A backup HD recording on USB stick on a separate Recorder...
(DVB400)

Then converted & trimmed & joined in one operation....
Wondershare Video Converter using Apple iMac

Duration without ads... 46 minutes

Since society considers the non conscious synths to lack feelings and empathy then why would they be used as counsellors?
Well, that's perfect then - every 'counsellor' I've ever met has been exactly like that, lol...

Does anyone know where the seaside resort is (where the café is)? I feel as if I should know it.

She could be bi? Or gender fluid maybe?

- if it wasn't so incredibly difficult to believe that a robot could ever be so realistic that it could fool a lover. They can't even walk naturally and they're supposed to be warm to the touch, soft and wet in the right places, have a natural scent, look indistinguishable close up? Please.

You could tell the episode lacked tension. You start to pick holes in it, like how unbelievable this or that is. People not willing to suspend their disbelief for the sake of the story.

Its Westgate. The West Bay end.

True. Niska's body may have a female appearance but her mind will be gender neutral. So is Niska really behaving enough like a woman to attract a lesbian? Doubt it from what we've seen. Foreign lesbian chick was andromorphising.

Surely I'm not the only one to conclude that Niska is up to no good somehow? Turning herself in? She's got something in mind here. Niska ain't stupid.

How did you edit the commercials out?
You set your HD recorder to series record. Open your recording and select the edit option and just lose the commercial breaks ... it's really not hard! Watching Sunday's episode 1 without breaks kept the story flowing and took 46 minutes.

I found the councillor odd as it was a recognisable actress so didn't seem real. Enjoyed it otherwise and look forward to next week.
Josie Lawrence may well be recognisable, but your comment implies that other synths aren't!

Gemma Chan (Mia) has been pretty busy in recent years (Brotherhood, Fresh Meat, Bedlam, Secret Diary of a Call Girl) and although not quite so well known, Emily Berrington (Niska) was in Inbetweeners 2, The White Queen, Outnumbered, 24:Live Another Day among others.

Enjoyed it, but the ad breaks started to drive me nuts. Seriously considering giving it up. Just getting into it and there's another sodding break! Argh!!!!!
Record the series and edit out the breaks .. I always do that with commercial channel drama series.

Gaping plot hole for me.

It's sci-fi aka fantastical .. in other words it's not real, so don't look for 'gaping plot holes'!

Meh, it obeys the prime directive of all successful sci-fi series, have plenty of beautiful women on screen as much as possible.
Bit cynical don't you think, although we all probably appreciate a bit of eye candy in our Sunday night drama series. I'm led to believe that some ladies think Colin Morgan (Leo) is worth more than a cursory glance!

- if it wasn't so incredibly difficult to believe that a robot could ever be so realistic that it could fool a lover. They can't even walk naturally and they're supposed to be warm to the touch, soft and wet in the right places, have a natural scent, look indistinguishable close up? Please.
Don't forget, Niska is a very high grade synth who has managed to evolve some human emotional capacity. This is admittedly fairly rudimentary, as witness the scene where she summarily dumped her lesbian lover without any apparent emotion at all, but she's clearly a key figure in this second series and therefore not one to be messed with.

***************************************************************************************************************

Reading through the last few pages of this thread it's apparent that some viewers are posting during the programme, i.e. before they know what's happening. That might explain why some people miss bits of the story or aren't sufficiently gripped by it. Me, I can only do one thing at a time, so it's lights down, headphones on, volume up and sit glued right to the end ... then talk about it!

I've only got a telly (and Fire HD stick), no PVR. Your move

Fact is, there's still way too many ads these days, they've gone past the reasonable threshold at some point in the last few years.

Watched the last series but turned this off at the eye-rollingly predictable lesbian scene in episode one. Have these scriptwriters really run so low on ideas or was it just a cheap thrill for the straight men watching?

Ah yes, I went through there a couple of years ago. So that's the West Bay caff? (That must have been a fun filming day for the locals... )

In fairness, there was not really a "lesbian scene" to speak of. All left to the mind really, as it should be in an internet world where nudity on TV is absurd now.

Guessing the next romantic storyline will be between Anita and her cafe boss, doubt he will be put off by finding a charging point on her lower abdomen either.

Lesbian scene? How did I miss that!

A robot is a robot, a pc for a brain. Not really straight or gay, even if there had been a "lesbian" scene.
