If the BBC were to re-release Doctor Who episodes in the cinema with 3D post-conversion, which episodes would you most like to see post-converted into 3D and why?

Personally, I think Bad Wolf/Parting Of The Ways and The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Time Lords would work extremely well in 3D. 1 hour 30 minutes would also be more realistic for a 3D cinema release than a measly 45.

I thought 3D was declining. Also comparing episodes of Doctor Who to popular movies isn't a good comparison in my opinion. I don't think it would be a commercial success. If it was a new and a significant episode being shown in 3D then yes it would work in that case, however there won't be a huge demand for seeing Last of the Time Lords in 3D in Cinemas. I am happy to be proved wrong.

The key words there are 'for TV'. 3D isn't dead for cinema just yet and it certainly isn't dead for 3D at home IMO.

2 things you can't have The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Time Lords without the previous episode, as that is firmly part of the story, in fact so is the Lazarus Experiment also a part of the story!

Second all new who up to the Tennant specials from 2009 were only in SD and that could never successfully be converted to 2K 3D and look good for cinema, that is on top of the fact it would have to be slowed down and no one liked how that worked with day of the Doctor!

Like I say you could never convert something that was SD 720*576 25fps 50Hz to 3D 2K 2048*1080(x2) 24fps(or 23.976) and it still look good.
Its fine to upscale it straight to 1920*1080 at 50Hz (25fps) and it still look fine but only on TV as cinema can't do 25fps or 50Hz!

You definitely don't need The Lazarus Experiment and whilst Utopia is part of a three parter with The Sound Of Drums and Last Of The Time Lords, I'd argue you could have the latter two episodes on their own without Utopia. I doubt Utopia would benefit much from 3D.



Rise Of The Cybermen/Age Of Steel was shown on a cinema screen. And the slow down with Day of the Doctor wasn't even noticeable.

I didn't know that story was shown at the cinema, did they make a high definition copy of it somewhere? As for 3D from an SD program that really wouldn't look good!

I disagree about the slowdown its as bad as PAL speedup it distorts the audio which can ruin the experience. It might not be the case for some people but there is many people that notice such things!
The sooner a frame rate can be created that can be divisible by 24, 25 and 30 then we can finally have harmony between standards!

Which wasn't converted to 3D. So why bring that example in to the conversation when it has been already been explained why the quality control of converting SD (pre-2009) into 3D wouldn't really work.


Quite a few stories have been screened at multiplexes up and down the country, so far I've attended premiere screenings of Smith & Jones, 42, The Waters of Mars and special event screenings of The Five Doctors, and The Poison Sky. They may have had upgrading to make it passable as HD but when shown on the big screen they still lost some quality.

3d is a technology for the facile, so whatever has the most computer graphics will do. Last of the Time Lords?
