I think he's awesome. How can you not love a adorable tin dog with a laser for a nose?

Funny for about thirty seconds. Then annoying. Gimmicky. Cheap. It was almost an in-joke how awful it was back in the Seventies. RTD gave a respectful pat on the head but also seemed well aware there was no place for such a thing in New Who. So no. Never again.

Ha! You'd be forgiven for making that mistake. K9 always reminded me of those little dirt devil's you could get, and Dalekbuster let's be honest is a close second. Temperamental, prone to blowing up, but with an unmistakable charm

Don't find him annoying exactly, but neither do I find him anything interesting or special, I would say more dated and awkward, so out of the two options available I voted annoying as it is closer to my feelings than awesome.

Plus, dalekbuster, you've blatantly started this thread to try and prove a point about a conversation from another thread, but if it turns out you are wrong, will you admit it is so?

Really like a lot of Season 16 so couldn't have found him annoying. No, K9's alright, generally, although wasn't keen on the Brierley voice. Alright isn't an option, so not voting!

I love the idea of K9 but he shouldn't speak. I think he should be silent. Like R2-D2 but without the bleeps and whistles.

As a kid, I loved K9. Even had the Palitoy toy one in 1979. As an adult, I can see why people find him annoying. I still love K9 though.

I think K9 is great (I too had/still have my Palitoy K9 from when I was 7).
Tony Harding's original design was a masterstroke. I still find his 'four legs' moulded on to each corner a nice touch but I wouldn't want K9 to be a full-time companion again.

I thought that K9 was an amusing tin dog for the first couple of stories (I was about 15 at the time!). But he got on my wick after that - noisy, clumsy, and I often wondered how it got out of the Tardis (that step, and one door open - too narrow!)!
Loved it when I saw him in Tennant's story though along with Sarah Jane!!

But all in all - nay to K9! Sorry.

PLUS - that dog made the show look like a kiddies series - which it WAS NOT! Family viewing - Yes!

Oh, look! A false dichotomy!

Not only is K9 both awesome (if you mean this in the debased "Lego Movie" sense) and annoying, it is part of his awesomeness that he is annoying. Can we have a more sophisticated poll, please, if you're really interested in how people rate the character? I haven't been able to vote on this one.

Sounds to me like he's more awesome to you than annoying.

Awesome when he's John Leeson, annoying when he's David Brierley.

I hated K9 when he was introduced. At the time there were annoying robots turning up in everything thanks to Star Wars. It just seemed so childish to me and I was 9!! I wrote to Radio Times complaining and a weekly comic called 'Krazy' that used to run a thing where you could write in and they would publish a picture of someone you didn't like with a custard pie in their face! None were published though. I was so chuffed when JNT announced that K9 was being axed! Re-watching those episodes now it surprises me how little K9 was in it really, and I actually find him quite amusing and quaint.

But I would be betraying 9 year old me (and he really is the only one whose opinion matters to me) if I voted for anything other than annoying in this very limited poll...sorry K9!

Then perhaps you should scrutinise my post more closely, as I have not stated this. My point was that your poll offers a false dichotomy between "awesome" and "annoying", and consequently I was unable to participate. Please do not try to massage this into a vote for the side you would prefer. It is not a vote for either side, but an observation on the inadequacy of the poll.

Does this hold true for the Australian series?

K9 isn't annoying, K9 is informatively awesome.

Yes, he's voiced by Leeson throughout the Australian series. It's not brilliant, but it has its moments, and I feel a certain affection for it, though I can see that many forum members wouldn't share this. I think it's worth watching at least once, should you ever have the time and the inclination.

K9 is, and was always, a t**t.

He is part of the reason why people like Steven Fry consider the show Childrens' TV rather than family TV, and thought less of their friends like Douglas Adams as human beings.

Why 'either', 'or'? Why not both?

I think K9 has been an asset to Doctor Who, but at the same time he'd be annoying in larger doses. Appearing in School Reunion worked for the sake of nostalgia and the story did a great job at making it work convincingly. His appearance in Journey's End was a nice little '...and there's the kitchen sink' kind of moment and it was great to give him that little moment.

His appearances in The Sarah Jane Adventures: Series 1 were similarly very good. A brief cameo in the pilot and then arriving to save the day in the finale worked a treat. Having the dog on board as a regular character in Series 3 did no favours though - I believe it was a contractual obligation to include him in every story of the series which ultimately proved less is more, and then he was carted off with Luke for Series 4.
As Series 5 intended to show him with Luke at Oxford, I'm content in my head to imagine that that particular iteration of K9 stays with Luke and intended interest Sanjay... it's off-screen, I don't need to see it, but like Sarah Jane herself all those characters are still out there doing as was intended before Sladen's untimely passing.

There's no need for K9 in Who proper now though... he's a nostalgic nod but that's really all he can be in that guise. That said I feel the show is overdue another past-companion return. Either bring Jo Grant back into the picture following her SJA appearance, or someone else... the School Reunion idea, but maybe play it a bit differently.
